“I’m telling the truth–you have to believe metÂ
The woman shrank into a trembling ball, her eyes wide with terror.Â
She glanced up at Nova, her gaze pleading for mercy.Â
Nova stared at her coldly, a bitter laugh rising in her throat.Â
Where had this fear been when she’d slandered Nova?Â
Where had her sense of consequence been when she’d coldly turned her accusations on Nova earlier?Â
Ridiculous!Â
Kael stepped in front of Nova, blocking the woman’s desperate gaze, then gave Sam a silent signal.Â
Sam nodded, walking over to the woman and kneeling down to meet her eyes. His tone was half–teasing, half–threatening. “I heard your daughter has leukemia You’re still looking for a bone marrow match, aren’t you? Tell us who put you up to this, and Mr. Voss will make sure your daughter gets the treatment she needs.”Â
The woman froze for a second, then shook her head frantically–she looked like she’d rather die than talk.Â
am’s smile faded. He leaned in, his voice dropping to a cold whisper. What he said made the woman’s face turn deathly pale, her lips trembling violently.Â
You–you’re monsters! How could you be so cruel?”Â
am shrugged, standing up. “I’m just giving you a choice. The decision is yours.” He stepped back, leaving the woman to her panic.Â
Cael glanced at Nova, his heart softening.Â
ler face was pale–she was too sensitive not to guess what Sam had threatened.Â
fter years in the cutthroat business world, Kael was no longer the naive young man he’d been. But he couldn’t bear to see Nova stained by this ugliness.Â
Don’t worry,” he said, bending down to kiss her forehead gently. His eyes were warm, his love for her impossible to hide. “It’s just a threat.”Â
lova lowered her eyes, pulling away from his touch.Â
ler heart ached. Kael, you’re even crueler to me.Â
he should have seen this long ago–he was ruthless to everyone, even her. Some things had changed, and there was no going back.Â
lael’s gaze darkened. He thought she was just scared, so he patted her back reassuringly, then turned to the woman, his voice firm. “You have my word. No one vill hurt you or your daughter. I’ll stake my life on it.”Â
he woman’s eyes filled with tears. “How can I trust you? Men like you only care about yourselves! You guys would do anything for power–why should I elieve you? Her voice cracked, and she fell silent.Â
Cael’s lips twisted into a cold smile. “So there is someone behind this. Someone who’s threatening you to frame my wife.”Â
The air in the room grew thick with tension. Few people could stand against Kael’s intense stare.Â
The woman’s resolve crumbled. She burst into tears, her shoulders shaking. “Promise me–promise my daughter will get treatment…”Â
Kael walked over, his presence overwhelming. “My patience is running out.”Â
The woman stared at the ceiling, as if gathering her last bit of courage. Finally, she spoke, her voice hoarse. “Someone contacted me this morning. She said if I lid this, she’d give me money–and find a bone marrow match for my daughter…”Â
Nova’s hands tightened into fists. Her brow furrowed with anger.Â

He ordered Sam to take the woman to the hospital and keep her under strict guard. Sam nodded, gesturing for the bodyguards to carry her outÂ
The office fell silent.Â
Nova still hadn’t recovered from the shock–her mind was a jumble of thoughts.Â
Kael stroked her back gently, his voice soft and reassuring. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here. She probably fainted from stress. When she wakes up, well find out who’s behind this. I won’t let anyone get away with hurting you.”Â
Nova dosed her eyes, swallowing her disappointment. She had to face reality–she’d have to wait.Â
I won’t let anyone who hurt you go unpunished,” Kael added, a flash of violence in his eyes.Â

loane had provoked her, framed her, and toyed with her feelings. She’d been so close to making Sloane pay–and now she had to wait.Â
I’m tired,” she said, pushing Kael away. “I want to go home.”Â
Kael could feel her growing distance. It was like a knife to his heart. “Nova, you know how stubborn I am. I can’t stand being lied to.” He reached for her hand. Once we find the person who did this, I’ll make them pay. I promise.”Â
Hmm.” Nova’s response was cold and distant. She turned and walked toward the door.Â
Cael felt a pang of hurt. He called out to her, his voice desperate. “Nova, we used to be so happy. Why let a stranger ruin us? Corin’s gone back to Seattle. I’ll take are of whoever hurt you. Can’t we just go back to how we were? Stop being angry with me, please?”Â
omething in his words hit a nerve. Nova froze. “Angry?” She turned around, her eyes suddenly red. She looked like a wronged child finally letting her motions out. “After everything that’s happened–you think I’m just angry with you?Â
Kael! Do you even have a heart?”Â
Cael fell silent. He walked over to her like a lost puppy, reaching out to hug her. “You’re talking to me again… Baby, I didn’t mean that. I was angry. Don’t take it o heartÂ
lova’s shoulders shook with anger. She pushed him away. “Why did we end up like this? Tell me–who’s to blame? Who?”Â
Cael realized something was seriously wrong. When he saw tears streaming down her face, he panicked. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. I’m an idiot. Bease, don’t cry…”Â
Nova looked at him through her tears. Her eyes–once bright and full of love–were now filled with sorrow and pain. “Kael, I don’t want to see you anymore.”Â
The turned and left the office without looking back.Â
Kael chased after her, but she’d already gotten into the elevator. He ran down the stairs, but by the time he reached the lobby, she was gone.Â
He was too late.Â
Frustrated, he punched the wall. He pulled out his phone, made a quick call, and rushed to his car.Â
Nova watched him from a distance–she’d seen him run down the stairs, burst out of the building, and drive away, his face full of regret.Â
If he’d just turned around once, he would have seen her,Â
But he didn’t.Â
Not even once.Â

It was like all these years–if he’d just looked back at her, he would have noticed how tired she’d become, how the light had faded from her eyesÂ
But he never had.Â
All he’d left her with was his back–and endless heartache.Â
Nova wiped away her tears, clinging to her last bit of pride. She hailed a taxi on the street.Â
She didn’t go home–she told the driver to drive aimlessly.Â
The taxi’s radio played a song. “Why do the ones who love first cool down first? While the slow–burners keep burning, unable to stop…”Â
Nova listened, and her eyes filled with tears again, blurring her vision.Â
Meanwhile, Kael was beside himself with worry.Â
He tried calling Nova’s friends, but he realized with a jolt that he didn’t have any of their phone numbers. He knew nothing about her social circle over the past two years.Â
Kael covered his face with his hand. A wave of panic and emptiness washed over him–something he’d never felt before.Â
Mr. Voss…” Sam glanced at him in the rearview mirror, hesitating to speak.Â
‘Spit it out.” Kael’s voice was cold.Â
Sam hesitated. “There’s trouble with Corin…”Â
