Chapter 34 Unease–What If the Secret is Exposed!Â
Chapter 54 Unease–What If the Secret Is Exposed?Â
Nova woke up around 10 AM the next morningÂ
She i slept fitfully, her dreams filled with Kael and Sloane.Â
She reached out, expecting to touch the floor–and was surprised when her hand hit warm sheets.Â
She stared at the ceiling, her eyes empty. No one knew what she was thinking.Â
Kael pushed the door open gently. He’d been checking on her every hour, worried she’d get worse. The food was already warm–he’d reheated it twice. He wanted to wake her, but he’d been afraid to disturb her.Â
“Nova… you’re awake.” He froze in the doorway, his emotions conflicting.Â
He was relieved she was up, but terrified she’d lash out at him.Â
But Nova didn’t even look at him, lying quietly, staring at the ceiling.Â
With growing panic, he walked to the bed, kneeling down. “I made breakfast. Let’s go downstairs and eat, okay? You didn’t eat yesterday–your stomach will hurt.” He reached for her hand.Â
Nova pulled away, sitting up slowly. She swung her legs over the bed, her movements cold and distant.Â
Kael’s heart tightened.Â
He didn’t mind her anger–yelling, crying, even hitting him. At least that meant she still cared.Â
This silence, this indifference… it scared him. It felt like she’d already given up on him.Â
Nova ignored him completely, going to the bathroom to wash up and put on makeup. By the time she was ready to leave, Kael couldn’t take it anymore. He stepped in front of her, blocking the door.Â
‘Baby, I’ll find the bracelet. It’s too important to lose. And the woman at the hospital–doctors are doing everything they can. She’ll wake up soon. Please… don’t 10.”Â
Nova blinked, her eyes dull. Sloane’s taunts echoed in her mind. “No wonder Kael keeps coming back to me… He lost that bracelet of yours like it was nothing.”Â
Like it was nothing.Â
hose words cut deeper than any knife.Â
Nova’s vision blurred. She looked at Kael’s panicked face, and all she felt was contempt.Â
I’m going to the office to hand over my work,” she said, her voice flat.Â
Relief washed over Kael. “I’ll change clothes and go with you.”Â
fe turned to leave, missing the pain in her eyes.Â
At the office, Kael had urgent work to finish. He went to his office, promising to meet her downstairs later.Â
Nova forced a smile and walked to her own office, preparing to hand over her projects.Â
Sam followed Kael, listing his schedule. “You have an overseas meeting in 30 minutes. And a dinner with a client at 6:30 PM…”Â
Kael frowned, cutting him off. “Reschedule the dinner.”Â

He needed to see Sloane.Â
A cold glint flashed in his eyes as he flipped through his papers.Â
Sam didn’t dare question him “Yes, Mr. Voss.”Â
Downstairs, Nova was busy organizing her files when someone knocked on her door.Â
“Come in.”Â
Sam walked in. carrying a box. “Ms. Hale, Mr. Voss ordered your favorite pastry.”Â
Nova froze. The packaging was from her favorite shop–the one Kael used to take her to every weekend.Â
Those mornings had been filled with laughter and love. He’d teased her for being “easy to please.”Â
She’d smiled, saying nothing.Â
I wasn’t easy to please. I just loved you enough to overlook everything.Â
Nova pinched her palm, forcing herself back to reality. She didn’t want to make things hard for Sam. “Put it there,” she said, nodding to her desk. “You can goÂ
now.”Â
But Sam didn’t move.Â
Nova looked up. “Is there something else?”Â
Sam hesitated. “Mr. Voss said I should stay until I see you eat something.”Â
Nova’s brows furrowed. She hated how Kael used his power to control people–even in small ways.Â
In the end, she didn’t make things hard for Sam.Â
When she opened the takeout box, inside were exactly her favorites: a slice of warm cinnamon roll, a cup of creamy vanilla oatmeal with fresh blueberries, and a few light sides–roasted asparagus and a small portion of quiche.Â
Nova’s eyes dimmed as she took a tiny bite of the cinnamon roll.Â
Sam stood nearby, and it was impossible for him to miss how haggard she looked. This Nova was a world away from the bright, confident woman he’d known–listless, like a flame that’d been smothered.Â
It makes sense. Carry that much weight in your chest long enough, and eventually, it’ll break you.Â
He sighed, then spoke up, unable to hold back. “Ms. Hale, what happened at the hospital was a total shock. No one expected that woman to stay unconscious. As loon as Mr. Voss got the news last night, he arranged for her to be transferred to a private ward and flew in specialists from abroad to treat her.”Â
Nova’s fork paused mid–air. So that woman really still hadn’t woken up?Â
Last night, Mr. Voss called me at midnight asking the security to open the company doors,” Sam added. “He spent the whole night here, looking for a bracelet.”Â
Looking for a bracelet… at the company?Â
Hadn’t Kael been at the hospital with Sloane last night?Â
“Is that so…” Nova’s expression stayed calm, but her fingers tightened around her fork until her knuckles whitened. She forced a piece of quiche into her mouth.Â
Once her favorite, it now tasted like nothing–like chewing on paper.Â
Sam heaved another sigh, not sure how much more he should say, but he pressed on anyway. The truth is… you’re the most important person to Mr. Voss.”Â
He’d seen it, even if Nova hadn’t. Sure, Kael kept Sloane around, even doted on her sometimes–but to Sam, it looked like how someone might spoil a pet, justÂ

Kael would never treat Nova that way. He’d never dare.Â
sam couldn’t bring himself to say the rest–it felt too cruel, too ironic.Â
Nova said nothing, not giving any sign she’d heard him. She just pushed the quiche around in its container with her fork.Â
The crust looked the same, the filling still had that golden hue… but one bite was enough to tell her it was off. The cheese was less creamy, and the veggiesÂ
inside felt skimpy.Â
Just like her marriage to Kael. Shiny on the outside, but rotting underneath–never going back to what it was.Â
“You can go now,” she said, swallowing down the bitterness in her throat.Â
Sam nodded and left, closing the door behind him.Â
As soon as he was gone, Nova clapped a hand over her mouth, stumbling into the bathroom. She retched violently, heaving up everything she’d just eaten–until there was nothing left but bitter bile.Â
After a long while, she rinsed her mouth and looked up at her reflection in the mirror. Pale, eyes red–rimmed, exhausted. She managed a bitter laugh.Â
How did I end up like this?”Â
Everything Kael gave her–just like the man himself–hurt her body, and tore her heart apart.Â
she fought back the stinging in her eyes, took a deep breath, and walked back out.Â
Her phone on the desk buzzed. It was her mentor, sending feedback on the sketches she’d emailed the night before.Â
Nova read through the notes, then pulled up the drafts and started revising. She threw herself into the work, desperate to drown out every other thought.Â
Nova, what are you drawing?”Â
he office door had opened silently behind her–she hadn’t heard a thing.Â
Nova’s hand froze mid–sketch. She looked up to find Kael staring at her, confusion written all over his face. “What is that?”Â
Nothing,” she said, flustered.Â
he quickly folded up the sketch and crumpled it into a ball, tossing it into the trash. “Just killing time.”Â
Cael still looked skeptical. He’d caught a glimpse–something that looked like jewelry designs.Â
ince when had Nova been into that? And why was she hiding it from him?Â
fe was about to press for answers when his phone rang, cutting him off.Â
The caller ID showed “Mom.”Â
Cael’s brow furrowed almost imperceptibly as he glanced at Nova.Â
Nova fell silent, a cold, uneasy feeling settling in her stomach.Â
