Kael strolled in with a takeout bag slung over his arm, his suit jacket casually draped over one shoulder–effortlessly charming, in that roguish way that turned 

heads. 

Margaret lifted her cane and swatted it at his leg, her voice sharp with irritation. “Who do you think? You! How have you been taking care of Nova? Can’t you see how run down she looks?” 

Kael’s gaze flicked to Nova, sweeping over her quickly. She looked the same to him–pale, slender… no different than usual. 

Nova’s eyes dimmed as she dropped her gaze. 

So he hadn’t noticed. He hadn’t seen how the light had faded from her once–bright eyes, how the love that used to glow in them had been drowned in sorrow. 

Kael smiled, turning back to Margaret and playing along. “You’re right–it’s my fault. I haven’t been taking good care of her. That’s why I had the chef pack her 

favorite chicken and wild rice soup. We’ll take it back with us later.” 

Nova stared at the takeout bag on the table. Images flashed through her mind–Kael and Sloane kissing like no one was watching, Kael carrying Sloane away in 

his arms. 

Even her numb heart twinged with pain. 

It had all been a lie, a cover–up for his meeting with Sloane. But he spoke with such sincerity… as if he still loved her with every part of him. 

Nova bit her lower lip hard, the bitterness in her chest overwhelming. 

Margaret huffed, pulling her cane back. “That’s more like it. But if I hear you’re treating Nova badly again, I’ll break your leg!” 

Kael’s playful demeanor vanished instantly. He said seriously, “I could never hurt her. I love her so much.” 

Nova listened silently. As she peeled an apple, the knife nicked her finger–but the pain was nothing compared to the ache in her heart. 

Kael noticed first. He grabbed her hand, his voice laced with worry. “Careful! Does it hurt? Let me do this next time. Leave the peeling to me, okay?” 

His gentle voice was right beside her ear. 

But in that moment, Nova couldn’t hear a thing. All she could smell was the faint perfume clinging to him–the same scent Sloane wore. 

Not long ago, he’d been whispering sweet nothings to Sloane. 

Nova’s heart ached before she pulled her hand away. “I’m fine. I can do it myself.” 

Kael froze, surprised by her rejection. He frowned, about to speak–then his eyes caught the faint flush at the corners of her eyes. 

She only got that way when she was truly hurt. 

Kael’s heart softened immediately. He regretted leaving her alone to meet Sloane. Alison must have picked another fight with her while he was gone. 

Why hadn’t he just sent Sloane away? 

Why had he left his girl alone in this house, knowing Alison hated her? 

Kael clenched his jaw. Ite cupped her face in his hands, his voice soft. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have left you alone. Did Mom give you a hard time again? I’ll talk to her later. Don’t be upset, okay? It breaks my heart.” 

Margaret, her hearing fading with age, couldn’t make out their whispers. But seeing them close, she slipped away quietly, giving them space. 

Nova didn’t want to cry She’d endured so much heartache before and barely shed a tear. But today, she couldn’t hold it back 

Maybe it was Alison’s cruel words that had pushed her over the edge–nine years of love, and you’re not even as good as a prostitute.” 

Maybe it was the thought that even if she died, someone else would easily take her place.

Kael wasn’t going anywhere. He pulled her back into his arms, holding her tight against his chest, stubborn and unyielding.

He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. Her hair smelled like soft rose–unique, irreplaceable. Sloane was just a fling. Nova was his girl, his everything. 

But Nova only felt sick. He’d held Sloane like this, too, not long ago. 

“I need to use the bathroom.” She frowned, shoving him away with all her strength. 

Kael hugged her once more, reluctant to let go, then stepped back. 

Nova fled to the bathroom, turning on the faucet and scrubbing her wrists, her arms–every part of her he’d touched. 

She scrubbed until her skin was raw, then leaned against the wall, her face pale and drained. 

“I’ll wait outside for you.” Kael knocked on the door, his voice gentle. 

In that moment, tears flooded Nova’s eyes. 

“I’ll wait for you on the playground after class.” At seventeen, Kael had slipped her a note after school. That day, he’d planned a confession that made the whole school jealous. 

“You’re the only one I’ll ever wait for.” At twenty–two, when his family had tried to split them up and she’d hesitated, Kael had found her. The proud. confident boy had red eyes, begging her-“you’re the only one.” 

She didn’t know when “he waits for her” had turned into “she waits for him.” 

In that empty house, she’d waited up for him night after night, countless sleepless evenings. In the end… she’d waited in vain. All she’d gotten was a heart that grew farther and farther away. 

He’d left her behind, over and over again. 

Nova hugged herself, sobbing silently–like a child who’d lost everything. 

We promised, didn’t we? 

You said you’d never leave me. 

Outside the bedroom, Margaret had called Kael out. 

“Have you been treating Nova badly? How else did she get so worn out in just two weeks?” Margaret’s voice shook, her eyes glistening with tears. 

In her memory, Nova had been like a little sun–affectionate, always smiling. 

Now, she didn’t seem that happy anymore. The smile had vanished from her face. 

Margaret gave him a meaningful look “Tomorrow’s your ten year anniversary with Nova, isn’t it? Make it up to her. She’s a soft hearted girl. If you’re genuine with her, she won’t hold a grudge. Understand?” 

Kael’s throat tightened. He dosed his eyes, and all he could see was Nova’s red, tearful eyes. 

He knew how soft his girl was. 

He pressed his tongue to the roof of his mouth, thinking of all the terrible things he’d done to her lately. His voice was hoarse. “I know. I’ll treat her right.” 

Margaret scolded him lightly, “If Nova comes back Jooking this tired again, I won’t let you off the hook!”

Kael nodded seriously. “She wont.” 

The hallway fell silent. 

Kael leaned against the wall, his eyes closed, that roguish aura still clinging to him–but no one knew what he was thinking. 

Margaret sighed, looking at him, her voice part warning, part plea. “Kael, don’t lose the most important thing in your life… only to regret it later. Some things only come once. If you let them go, you’ll never get them back.” 

Just then, a phone rang. 

Kael hadn’t fully registered Margaret’s words. He pulled his phone out of his pocket–it was Sam, his secretary. 

Had he found something about the contract? 

Kael’s eyes darkened. He nodded to Margaret, signaling he needed to take the call, and walked away. 

Margaret watched his tall, straight back, her brows furrowed with worry. 

In the end, she could only sigh.
