Chapter 69 Heartless Abandonment!

On the cruise ship, the gala was in full swing.

Ms. Reed, your dress tonight is stunning! Where did you get it custommade?”

Absolutely beautifulthe designer must have put so much thought into it. It fits you perfectly!”

loane giggled, pride shining in her eyes. My boyfriend had it made just for me. One of a kind.”

jasps of envy followed. He’s so sweet to you! Almost as good as Mr. Voss!”

Imagine that he even designed it himself? Total romance!”

loane lifted her chin, her smile never fading. But then, a commotion at the entrance turned every head.

Mr. and Mrs. Voss are here!”

Oh my godMrs. Vossdress! Look at all those pink diamonds! How much must that cost? Mr. Voss spoils her rotten!”

loane’s smile froze. Her hands curled into fists at her sides.

n seconds, the crowd that had been praising her dispersed, flocking to get a look at Nova.

lumiliation burnedNova had stolen her spotlight again. She bit her lip, a cold glint in her eyes, and marched over.

ael had stepped away to grab the gift, leaving Nova to navigate the crowd alone. She forced polite smiles, but her heart wasn’t in it. When she looked up, she aw Sloane walking toward her.

lova frowned at Sloane’s dresssomething about it felt familiar, but she couldn’t place it.

loane met her gaze, a mocking smirk on her lips.

socialite chimed in, Mrs. Voss, Mr. Voss went all out for this anniversary! And that dressI heard it’s six figures! Pure luxury.”

Tova offered a faint smile.

Ms. Reed’s boyfriend is just as thoughtful, another added. He designed her dress himself. How romantic!”

Tova’s heart skipped a beat. She stared at Sloane’s dress, and suddenly it clicked.

loane giggled, feigning shyness. I didn’t expect it at all! I just mentioned liking custom dresses in passing, and he did this. He even said buying one wasn’t noughhe wanted to design it himself. So much time and effort”

She glanced at Nova, her eyes dripping with triumph.

Nova dug her nails into her palm to stay calm. When she looked at Sloane’s dress again, a bitter laugh escaped her. Of course it looked familiarKael had designed it.

She remembered stumbling on his tablet once, seeing sketches of this exact dress. She’d naively thought it was a surprise for her.

Turns out, it was never meant for her.

Nova bit her lip, her eyes stinging with humiliation.

Sloane leaned in, her voice sweet but sharp. Mrs. Voss, your dress is lovelyMr. Voss bought it, right? I’ve heard he’s amazing at art. Why didn’t he design one for you himself?”

Chapter 69 Heartless Abandonment!

It was a knife to the heart. Nova’s breath hitched, tears threatening to spill.

Sloane’s grin widened, provoking her openly.

Designed dresses are romantic,Nova said suddenly.

Sloane preened. They are! My boyfriend is the sweetesthe gives me everything I want.”

Another stab to the chest. Nova pushed through the pain, her voice cold. It’s pretty, I’ll give you that. But alsocheap.”

Sloane’s smile faltered. Her face flushed red, then pale.

Nova’s tone sharpened. Dresses like that are a dime a dozen at street stalls. Only someone as naive as you would treat it like a treasure. You really are”

She leaned in, her voice a venomous whisper. A fool.”

Sloane’s eyes widened. Her dignity lay in tatters, humiliation burning her cheeks.

The socialites jumped in, echoing Nova. Ms. Reed, you’re too young to be dazzled by small gestures. Watch your stepyou don’t want to get played.”

Exactly! Don’t end up with nothing but a cheap dress and a broken heart.”

In other words: You’re stupid.”

Nova smiled, her voice icy. Let’s not be too harsh. They say birds of a feather flock together, after all. Some people are just meant for each other.”

A clear jabcalling Sloane as low as the men who used her.

Someone snickered.

Sloane’s face turned deathly pale. She wanted to disappear.

What’s going on?Kael returned, standing beside Nova. His eyes flickered when he saw Sloane, but he said nothing.

Sloane turned to him, her lower lip trembling. II know my dress can’t compare to Mrs. Voss. She has you to spoil herI’m justno one.”

Nova frowned. She glanced at Kael, and sure enough, she saw a flicker of guilt and pity in his eyes.

Sloane pouts, and he softens? Typical!

At the auction that morning, he’d fought everyone to get Sloane what she wanted. Clearly, she was his priority.

Nova’s numb heart ached. If not for her makeup, she’d look a mess.

Heh.Nova pulled her hand out of Kael’s, her gaze cold. Ms. Reed, drop the innocent act. Who are you trying to fool?”

The socialites nodded, their eyes filled with disdain for Sloane’s drama.

Sloane bit her lip, her eyes watering as she looked to Kael for help.

Nova took a deep breath. She couldn’t bear to watch her husband comfort another woman in front of everyone. It was too humiliating.

She lowered her head and turned to leavebut Kael grabbed her wrist.

Ms. Reed, know your place,he said sharply, no trace of kindness. My wife is in a league of her own. Don’t compare yourself to her.”

Nova froze.

Sloane gaped, tears spilling down her cheeks. How could he humiliate her like this in front of everyone? She’d never live this down.

Kael didn’t spare her another glance. He placed a hand on Nova’s shoulder, his voice softening to a murmur. The gift I got you is here. Let me show you.”

Chapter 69 Heartless Abandonment!

Nova stared at him, her heart aching. His act was perfectso convincing, so tender.

If only it were real.

She forced a nod, her body still cold with numbness.

Mr. Voss, we brought the item you requested! Two servers rolled over a large crate.

Set it there,Kael said. He tapped Nova’s nose playfully. Close your eyes. I’ll unwrap it.”

Nova’s heart fluttered. She had a feeling she knew what was inside.

Kael took a pair of scissors and cut the ribbons. The wrapping fell awayand a small golden retriever stepped out, shyly wagging its tail.

Nova heard a soft bark, joy and sorrow tangling in her chest.

Too late.

Kael, why now? Why not sooner?

Her nose burned.

Kael reached down to pick up the puppybut suddenly, it snapped, lunging at his arm.

Watch out!”

A slender arm shot out, blocking the dog. Sloane had thrown herself in front of him.

Kael’s heart jolted. He kicked the dog away and caught Sloane, who winced in pain and collapsed into his arms.

Nova opened her eyes just in time to see ither husband holding Sloane, his face filled with worry. If they weren’t in public, he’d probably carry her away right

now.

Her heart plummeted into a frozen pit.

In the next second, the dog turned and charged at her.

Nova froze, her face pale. Kael!she screamed.

But he was still holding Sloanehe didn’t even look up.

She had no time to run. The dog sank its teeth into her right leg. Pain exploded up her body, and her legs went weak. She realized the dog was dangerousbut it was too late. Her vision blurred, her voice died in her throat, and she blacked out.

In her last moment of consciousness, she saw Kael shielding Sloane, while she lay abandoned on the floor.

A single tear slipped down her cheek.

Then, everything went dark.
