Chapter 71 Torture & Revenge–A Brutal Payback!Â
Chapter 71 Torture & Revenge–A Brutal Payback!Â
Kael strode toward the nurses‘ station. At the sight of him, the head nurse and department director hurried over, their posture deferential, “Mr. Voss, is there anything you need? We can have it sent to you right away…”Â
Kael’s cold gaze swept over the nurses, who immediately bowed their heads, too frightened to breathe.Â
“What did you see at the ward door just now?”Â
The nurses‘ spines went rigid. They shook their heads in unison. “Nothing! We saw nothing at all!”Â
Of course they dared not admit it–they’d witnessed Nova hurl a glass bottle at Sloane, and heard the vicious things she’d said. It completely shattered their image of Nova.Â
Terrifying. They’d never imagined the normally elegant Nova could be so ruthless.Â
“Is that so?” Kael’s eyes turned menacing, his tone laced with a mocking warning. “Good. If I hear even a word of gossip about Nova–anything about what happened in that ward today–I’ll hold all of you accountable.”Â
The nurses panicked, stammering, “We won’t! We’ll never say a word!”Â
Kael gave them a final cold glare and walked away.Â
Around the corner nearby, Sloane clamped a hand over her mouth, tears pooling in her eyes.Â
So that’s what it was.Â
Kael hadn’t ignored Nova or grown cold toward her at all.Â
He’d been protecting her reputation–afraid the nurses would spread what they’d seen and heard.Â
She’d naively thought Kael was tired of Nova’s hot–and–cold mood.Â
How ridiculous!Â
Sloane let out a bitter laugh, defeated yet burning with unwillingness.Â
This was her chance–she’d make Nova fall, and fall hard.Â
Nova drifted in and out of consciousness, her calf throbbing, her hands aching. But she didn’t care. She wanted to feel this pain, to engrave it into her memory.Â
Suddenly, the ward door creaked open softly.Â
Nova tensed. She knew it was Kael. A sharp, stabbing ache welled up in her chest, and she closed her eyes, refusing to acknowledge him.Â
Kael approached the bed quietly. He pulled back the covers, revealing her tear streaked face–and his heart twisted with guilt.Â
He grabbed a wet wipe and gently wiped her cheeks. “I’m sorry, It’s my fault.”Â
He took her hand, careful of the glass cuts on her palm. He dabbed antiseptic on the wounds, then applied sterile bandages. Next, he tended to the gash on her calf, his movements gentle as if handling fragile porcelain.Â
But Nova’s chest only ached more. In her daze, she forced herself to block out his tenderness.Â
When he finished, Kael sat beside her, staring at her pale, vulnerable face. His resolve softened completely.Â
He brushed his thumb over her red, puffy eyelids. “I could never ignore you. Not for anyone.”Â

“Your safety that’s all that matters.”Â
He couldn’t let her hear the gossip about her. He’d handle it–all of it.Â
Just then, his phone buzzed in his pocket.Â
Kael frowned. He glanced at Nova, who seemed to be asleep, and ended the call. After tucking the covers around her and pressing a kiss to her forehead, he stepped outside to take the call.Â
The moment the door closed, Kael’s gentle expression vanished. He told a passing doctor to keep an eye on the ward, then found a quiet corner to answer.Â
“Any updates? Did you find out who did it?”Â
Sam’s voice was serious. “The dog was drugged–that’s why it went crazy. We’re still questioning everyone involved, but…” he sighed, frustrated. “They’re all tight–lipped. It’ll take time.”Â
Kael’s eyes hardened, his voice cold as ice. “I’m on my way.”Â
Sam shivered at his tone. Whoever had targeted Nova was truly suicidal. Once Kael found the mastermind, they’d regret ever being born.Â
He sighed, feeling sorry for the poor soul.Â
Sloane’s heart dropped when she heard Kael was investigating the cruise ship incident. She shot up from her chair. “What did you say? Kael’s questioning everyone from the cruise?”Â
The man on the phone tried to soothe her. “Don’t panic. I’ll take care of it.”Â
Sloane was livid–his reassurance did nothing. She paced the room, panic rising. “How can I not panic? If he finds out, I’m done for! I knew I shouldn’t have trusted you with this!”Â
She hung up, on the verge of tears.Â
Kael was ruthless. Those men would break under pressure and rat her out for sure.Â
What should I do?Â
“Heather walked over, eyeing the discarded medicine bottle on the floor. “Why aren’t you using this? Did the medicine offend you? Put it on–you don’t want aÂ
scar.Â
“Some bastard had the nerve to hurt my daughter…”Â
Sloane pouted, her eyes red. The sight of the medicine only made her angrier.Â
Nova was hurt, and Kael had tended to her wounds personally.Â
But her? Her calf was covered in ugly, red gashes from Nova’s glass shards–worse than Nova’s injuries–and Kael hadn’t even said a single comforting word.Â
The weight of it all crushed her.Â
“Mom, I’m finished,” Sloane sobbed, finally letting her emotions spill.Â
At the hospital, Nova tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep.Â
Kael hadn’t come back since that phone call…Â
He was probably with Sloane. After all, Sloane’s calf was badly hurt from the glass.Â
Why would he care about her?Â

Nova let out a bitter laugh. A heavy weight pressed on her chest, making if hard to breathe. She carefully propped herself up, slipped on her shoes and a coat, and walked out of the ward.Â
Mrs. Voss? A doctor spotted her and hurried over, concerned. “Is there something you need? Just press the call button–we’ll bring it to you.”Â
7m fine. Nova forced a smile, her face still pale. “The ward’s too stuffy. I’ll just walk around downstairs. Please… don’t tell Kael.”Â
The doctor hesitated. “1… I’m not sure if that’s a good idea.”Â
Nova bit her lip, not wanting to make it hard for him. “I’ll text Kael. It’ll be okay.”Â
“Alright, then.”Â
Nova nodded, pulled her coat tighter around herself, and took the elevator down.Â
The cool night air hit her face, easing the stuffiness in her chest.Â
As she walked, rapid footsteps approached from behind.Â
Nova turned–too late. A sharp pain hit the back of her head, and everything went dark.Â
Splash!Â
A bucket of cold water dumped over her head jolted Nova awake.Â
“Ah!”Â
A black hood covered her head, leaving her only able to make out blurry shadows in front of her. She struggled instinctively, only to realize her hands and feet were tied to the chair.Â
Panic surged through her, leaving her mind blank. What was happening?Â
A deep, cold male voice echoed above her. “Ms. Hale, no need to fear. I just want to… catch up.”Â
Nova’s mind reeled. Her face paled. “What do you want? Let me go! I’ll give you whatever money you want!”Â
Her words were cut off by his mocking laugh. He said nothing more–only spat out a cold warning. “You crossed someone you shouldn’t have.”Â
Nova’s mind went blank for a second. Then, a searing pain exploded in her calf.Â
AbÂ
A sharp shard of glass had sliced into her skin, brutal and unforgiving.Â
Nova convulsed in agony. “Ah…!”Â
The man smashed the glass bottle on the floor, then drove another shard into her calf. Blood oozed out, pooling on the ground.Â
Nova’s face drained of all color. She trembled uncontrollably, but forced out a weak, cold question. “Sloane sent you, didn’t she? To get revenge on me?”Â
Shed hurt Sloane–and now Sloane was making her pay a thousand times over.Â
The man didn’t answer. He was like a cold blooded devil, raining glass shards down on her injured leg.Â
“Ah!” Nova screamed, her body shakingÂ
Blood loss made her dizzy. She whispered deliriously, “It hurts… Kael, it hurts so much… Help me…”Â
“Stop dreaming,” the man sneered. “The person who ordered this? They’re surnamed Voss.”Â

Nova froze, her blood turning to ice. She shook her head frantically. “No… That’s impossible!”Â
How could Kael hire someone to hurt her–for Sloane’s sake?Â
The man laughed, a look of pity on his face as he pulled out his phone and made a call.Â
“Mr. Voss, the job’s done.”Â
Nova’s spine went rigid. She muttered “impossible” over and over–until a familiar voice from the phone shattered her last hope.Â
“Good. Don’t kill her. She hurt Sloane–let her suffer a little. That’s all.”Â
Boom!Â
Nova bit down hard on her inner lip, drawing blood. Hot tears poured down her face, mixing with the blood on her chin. Her heart felt like it had been torn to pieces.Â
So it was true. Kael had really hired someone to hurt her–for Sloane.Â
The man who’d once refused to let her suffer even a scratch… now ordered someone to torture her with glass.Â
The metallic taste of blood filled her mouth, blood and tears streaming down her jaw.Â
Finally, she couldn’t hold on any longer and collapsed into the pool of her own blood.Â
