Chapter 72 Taking Down the BitchSloane’s Done for!

Nova woke up shivering.

She’d been dumped on the side of the road like trash.

She lifted her trembling hands, struggling to sit up. She looked like a broken dollpale, bloodied, and lifeless.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over her.

Nova tensed. She looked up-and found herself staring into Sloane’s mocking eyes. Sloane glanced at her mangled calf, clicking her tongue. Tough night, huh?”

Get out of my way.” Nova’s voice was low and cold. She didn’t want to waste a single word on her. She tried to push herself up with her hands.

But then, a heavy weight pressed down on her shoulder.

Sloane kicked her hard, sending her crashing to the ground. Nova’s whole body screamed in pain. Ah!”

Sloane laughed, crossing her arms and looking down at her like she was dirt. This is what happens when you mess with me, Nova. I didn’t even have to lift a fingerKael did it for me. He made you pay for every hurt you caused me, a hundred times over.

Next time, be smarter. Otherwiseit won’t end this easily.”

She grabbed Nova’s chin, forcing her to look up.

Nova’s heart convulsed, as if squeezed by a vice. Humiliation and despair washed over her.

Her own husband. He’d hurt her for another woman.

And she’d been stupid enough to cling to a shred of hopehoping he’d come save her.

Slap!

Sloane shook off her face in disgust. Before walking away, she sneered, Pathetic. It’s pitchblack out here, not a soul around. Crawl back to the hospital if you canor die here. I don’t care.”

She strutted off, her mood lighter than ever.

Behind her, Nova lay on the road like a discarded rag, too weak to move.

Someoneplease help me…

Anyone…

I don’t want to die.

Nova sobbed, her voice breaking.

In her last moment of consciousness, she thought she saw a figure running toward her through the darkness.

Who is it?

She couldn’t hold on any longer. Her eyes closed, and she blacked out.

Nova!”

Corin scooped her up into his arms and rushed to his car. His usually calm face was twisted with panic. Don’t be afraid. I’m taking you to the hospitalnow.”

Jaxs glanced in the rearview mirror.

Corin had taken off his coat and wrapped it around Nova, trying to warm her freezing body.

It should have been a tender scene, but it made Jaxschest ache. He frowned and slammed his foot on the gas pedal.

The woman in Corin’s arms was ice cold, her calf covered in deep gashes.

Corin didn’t care about moralityor boundariesanymore. He held her tight, using his body to warm hers. He rested his chin on top of her head, his voice urgent. We’ll be there soon. Hold on.”

He shot Jaxs a cold look. Faster.”

Ten minutes later, the car skidded to a stop at the nearest hospital.

Corin carried Nova inside, sprinting toward the emergency room. Doctor! Someone help her!”

At the sound of his voice, Kael’s head snapped up. He saw Corin holding Novaand his heart, which had been in his throat all night, finally settled.

He ran over, his eyes red with fear. Corin! What did you do to her?”

Corin froze for a second. When he saw Kael, his eyes turned dark with rage. This was how Kael took careof her?

But he didn’t have time to argue. He carried Nova straight to the ER.

Let go of her, you bastardwhere did you take her?Kael grabbed his arm. But when he saw Nova’s bloodied, battered bodyher calf covered in glass woundshis words died in his throat. His eyes shook with pain. Baby”

Mr. Voss, show some respect!Jaxs snapped, stepping forward.

Sam held him back, his voice sharp. Mr. Ford, that’s enough.”

Corin gave Jaxs a silent signal, then glared at Kael. Shouldn’t you be asking yourself that? Why couldn’t you protect her? Where were youher husbandwhen

she was hurt?”

He emphasized the word husband, his tone dripping with contempt.

Kael stumbled back, his face dark and terrifying. He had no answer.

Corin didn’t waste another second. He carried Nova into the emergency room.

Kael shot a cold look at the nearby doctor, who immediately broke out in a cold sweat. “Mr. Voss! Mrs. Voss insisted on going out aloneshe said she’d texted you, and she didn’t want us to follow”

Veins bulged in Kael’s forehead. He clenched his jaw and chased after Corin. When he saw Nova’s pale face and bloodstained clothes, his heart felt like it was being cut with a knife,

He barely restrained himself from yanking her out of Corin’s arms.

After the doctor finished the initial examination and first aid, Kael stopped Corin. I’ll take it from here.”

Corin’s jaw tightened. He let out a bitter laugh. Right now, her life matters more than your ego.”

Kael’s face was cold. You helped her. I’ll repay youmy way. But she’s mine.”

He reached for Nova.

No need for your repayment!Corin snapped, stepping out of his reach.

Just then, Nova stirred in her sleep, her brows furrowed in pain. She whispered deliriously, Kaelit hurts”

The words jolted Corin awake.

He paused, his jaw tight. He clenched his fists, struggling with himself.

Karl’s heart ached. He shot Corin a cold look, then took Nova from his arms, his hands trembling. I’ll get you patched up. Don’t be afraid. It’ll stop hurting soon. I’m sorry.. so sony”

Behind him, Corin watched Kael carry Nova upstairs, his face cold, his hands clenching so tight his knuckles turned white. The air around him seemed to freeze.

Jaxs couldn’t hold back. Mr. Thorne, you were the one who searched everywhere for Ms. Hale when she went missing”

Corin held up a hand to cut him off. Find out who kidnapped her. This isn’t over.”

Jaxs opened his mouth to say more, but Corin had already walked away.

He stared at his bosslonely back, sighing in frustration.

Nova was trapped in a nightmare, muttering Kael’s name over and over.

Kael’s heart broke. He stroked her pale cheek gently. Don’t be afraid. I’m here. I’ll stay with you.”

He didn’t hear the rest of her wordssoft, broken whispers. Don’t touch meplease don’t touch me”

Mr. Voss, you can’t go in!The doctor blocked Kael from entering the intensive care unit, wheeling Nova inside.

Kael paced like a caged animal, guilt gnawing at him. He wanted to slap himself.

Bang!

He punched the wall, his eyes red with rage.

Sam arrived just in time to see this. He flinched. Mr. Voss, we have a lead”

Kael pulled himself together, his voice cold. Spit it out.”

Josh’s men did it. They drugged the dogThat’s why it attacked. They wanted revenge.”

Kael’s eyes turned stormy. Josh.”

Sam held his breath. Even from a distance, he could feel his fury.

Kael narrowed his eyes. He’s out of the police station by now, isn’t he?”

Yes.”

Kael adjusted his cuffs, his voice icy. Tell themI want him dead.”

Sam nodded. He hesitated, then added, The men who hurt Mrs. Voss tonight were also Josh’s men, Butwhen we found them, they were already dead.”

Dead?

Karl’s jaw tightened. He had a hunch who’d silenced them first. He clenched his fists, then asked sharply, Where’s Sloane now?”

Sam was confused, but answered honestly, Ms. Reed is at her apartment in Moon Bay.”

A dark shadow flashed across Kael’s face.

First, the chaos on the cruise ship.

Then, Nova being kidnapped by Josh’s menher calf torn to shreds by glass.

On the surface, none of this seemed connected to Sloane. But the more he thought about it, the more bizarre the pieces felt.

Kael tugged at his tie, his face darkening to a shade that signaled his impending fury.

Keep an eye on my wife. Notify me the second there’s any update,he snapped.

With that, he strode toward the elevator, his back radiating a cold, murderous intent.

Sam had seen Kael’s ruthless side beforebut never like this. Whatever Sloane had done to cross him, it was unforgivable.

He didn’t know the exact reason for Kael’s rage, but one thing was clear:

Sloane wouldn’t survive the night.
