Chapter 76 Heartbroken and Gone 

Nova didn’t know how she made it back to her room. She felt empty, like all her energy had been drained. 

When she saw the clothes and toiletries Kael had thoughtfully prepared for her, her vision blurred. All she could see was Kael gently tending to Sloane’s wound–such a tender scene. 

Nova let out a bitter laugh, her eyes red and swollen. 

Knock, knock. 

“Come in,” Nova said, quickly wiping her tears. 

The nurse who’d treated Sloane walked in. “Mrs. Voss, it’s done. If that woman doesn’t get treatment within half an hour, her leg will keep festering. She’ll never walk properly again.” 

Nova’s face was cold. She felt no sympathy–this was exactly what Sloane deserved. 

Thank you,” she said. 

The nurse shook her head and left. 

Nova took a deep breath. For the first time in days, her chest didn’t feel tight.

Kael had searched for her like a man possessed. When he found her, she’d been crying, scared and wronged. He’d been so heartbroken that he’d had a huge fight with Alison, even threatening to cut ties with the Voss family and give up his inheritance–all to protect her, to avenge her. 

But now? He heard her cry, he knew she was in pain, and he didn’t care. He just walked away. 

That’s the difference between love and indifference. 

When someone doesn’t love you anymore, even if you’re as gentle as a cat, they’ll still complain about your fur. 

Nova let out a bitter laugh, her heart feeling like it was being crushed. 

She pushed herself up from the floor, moving like a marionette. She changed into clean clothes, tidied herself up, and took one last look around the room. Then she walked out, never to return. 

Kael had just answered Sloane’s call when a nurse’s cart overturned in the hallway to his right. Glass bottles and medical supplies crashed to the floor, the noise so loud it made his ears ring. He didn’t hear a thing from Nova’s room. 

“Kael, someone put something in my medicine! It hurts so bad… Please help me,” Sloane sobbed over the phone. 

“Aren’t there nurses around?” Kael’s jaw tightened. He was growing impatient. He walked to a quieter spot. 

“No one’s coming… It hurts so much. Please, save me,” Sloane whimpered, her voice weak. 

Kael held the phone away from his ear and rubbed his temples. 

All he could think about was Nova. Had she gotten her bandages changed? Was she feeling okay? She hadn’t eaten since morning–was she hungry? Was she lonely in the room by herself? 

He was desperate to see her. 

But Sloane sounded like she was in serious trouble. 

Kael’s face hardened. He hesitated for a few seconds, then turned and walked toward the elevator. 

The nurses were with Nova 24/7–she’d be fine for a little while. But Sloane was alone. If something happened to her… And besides, her arm and leg injuries were because of him. 

Nova took a taxi back to the villa. 

The driver noticed how pale and exhausted she looked and gave her a kind smile. “Miss, you’ve gotta take care of yourself, even when you’re alone. Cheer up–life’s for living.” 

Nova’s throat felt tight. She nodded, her voice hoarse. “Thank you.” 

A stranger could see how broken she was, but Kael couldn’t. 

Of course he can’t. He has his new “family” now. 

Why would he care about her? 

Nova’s chest felt heavy. After thanking the driver, she walked slowly toward the villa 

When she opened the door, her heart stopped. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor.

The scene was terrifying–enough to make even a grown man flinch, let alone a woman. 

Nova’s face turned as white as a sheet. She had no strength left. Just as she managed to push herself up, a dead rat was thrown at her. 

Nova screamed, “Help! Someone, please help me!” 

“Now you’re scared for your life?” a voice sneered. 

“You should be in hell!” 

More voices joined in. A group of people wearing masks and gloves emerged from the shadows, holding cameras and taking photos of her. 

“You should’ve known this would happen when you killed Josh and beat Sloane!” 

“Sloane’s such a kind person, and you bullied her at work! You’re a monster!” 

The insults poured down on her. Nova hugged herself, shaking her head. “I didn’t do it! I didn’t do any of it!” 

But no one listened. 

“You don’t deserve to be Kael’s wife!” 

“We’re here to avenge Ms. Reed!” 

Before she could react, someone kicked her in the shoulder. 

Nova’s face turned white from the pain. She struggled, but it only made them angrier. Rotten eggs and moldy vegetables were thrown at her. 

“You heartless witch! Go to hell!” 

“How dare you keep living after all the terrible things you’ve done!” 

I didn’t… I didn’t…” Nova gasped for air. Her fragile body shook violently. But her pleas and denials only made the insults worse. 

What did I do wrong? 

Nova bit her lip until it bled. She fumbled in her bag for her phone and secretly pressed the emergency call button. 

After a few seconds, it connected. 

Help me… Please,” she whispered desperately. 

“Hova?” Sloane’s mocking laugh came through the line. “Sorry, Kael’s with me, getting my leg checked. He doesn’t have time for you.” 

Nova’s sind went blank, she suddenly remembered–Kael was her first emergency contact.

Kael was a workaholic. A few years ago, he’d pulled all–nighters for a project, never letting his phone leave his side–he didn’t even put it on silent when he slept. Even during their honeymoon, he’d brought work with him. 

But now? He’d left his phone with Sloane, just to spend time with her. He’d gone to such lengths to avoid her. 

Nova’s heart felt like it was being torn apart. She couldn’t breathe.
