Chapter 81 Tormenting the Scumbag and the Bitch 

Nova glanced down at her bare ring finger, a faint smile playing on her lips. “Yeah… where is the ring?” 

Her casual tone sent Kael plummeting into an ice–cold panic. 

He vividly remembered buying that ring. Back then, he’d just split from the Voss family and started his own business–times were so tough, he could barely make ends meet. The ring cost a measly $500–no diamonds, nothing fancy. Just a simple band. 

But Nova had cherished it like a treasure. She’d begged him to put it on her, saying it was the best gift she’d ever received. 

For five years of marriage, she’d never taken it off–not even when she showered or slept. 

And now it was gone. 

Kael’s face twisted with pain. He wrapped his large hand around her right hand, clinging to it like a lifeline. “Baby, our anniversary is in two weeks. I’ll take you o pick out a new ring then, okay? Just… put the old one back on for now. Don’t take it off.“. 

I need to wait again? 

This is the most ridiculous word in the world. Because the one who says it never means it, but the one who hears it always holds onto hope. 

After their lives had improved, Kael had promised to buy her a nicer, more expensive ring. She’d been over the moon back then. 

But she’d waited. And waited. And the promise had faded into silence. 

Nova let out a bitter laugh, gently pulling her hand free. She wasn’t going to wait for him anymore.

Cael’s hands trembled at his sides. Never in his life had he felt such overwhelming fear–as if something precious was slipping through his fingers, and he ouldn’t stop it. 

He fumbled for his phone, dialing Sam without hesitation. “Book an appointment at the jewelry store. I need to pick out a ring–now.” 

He couldn’t wait two weeks. He needed to give her a new ring tomorrow. Anything to ease this gnawing anxiety. 

Sam had never heard Kael sound so frantic. He knew it must be about Nova. “Right away, Mr. Voss. I’ll arrange it immediately.” 

Kael grunted in response, then frowned, “How’s the online drama going?” 

‘Ms. Reed recorded the clarification video. The public opinion is turning around, but… Ms. Reed will probably face a lot of backlash.”

Kael’s expression remained indifferent. As long as Nova was safe, he didn’t care about Slonne. “Give her some money to smooth things over.” 

“Yes, sir.” 

“One more thing…” He paused, lowering his voice, 

After listening, Sam’s eyes widened in shock. “Understood, Mr. Voss. I’ll handle it right away.” 

Kael hung up, took a deep breath, and hurried to catch up with Nova. 

They walked back to the villa in silence. 

No matter how hard Kael tried to cheer her up–rambling about her favorite dessert, mentioning a new art exhibit she’d wanted to see–Nova stayed cold and 

distant. 

“I’m tired. I want to rest,” she said finally, turning toward the stairs. “I’ll go upstairs first.” 

Kael froze, a wave of loneliness washing over him. 

Once, Nova had been so easy to comfort. A home–cooked meal, a bouquet of roses, or even just him clinging to her and begging for forgiveness–she’d always soften, a smile breaking through her pout. 

Now, she seemed to push him away more and more. And he had no idea how to fix it. 

Kael closed his eyes, rubbing his temples. He felt utterly helpless. 

Nova went straight to the bathroom when she got to the bedroom. Kael had hugged her earlier, and the faint scent of Sloane’s perfume on his clothes made her 

skin crawl. 

She stayed in the shower for an hour–until her skin was red and itchy–before finally turning off the water. 

When she stepped out, she did what she always did now. She picked up a marker and crossed out another day on the calendar. 

Fifteen days left. 

She stared at the row of bright red X’s, her fingers brushing over the paper gently. 

Once, she’d marked the calendar like this to count down to their anniversaries–excited, looking forward to the celebration. She’d never imagined that one day. 

she’d be counting down to her escape. 

Life really is full of cruel jokes. 

Vova took a deep breath, forcing herself to look away. She set the marker down, grabbed her tablet, and curled up on the couch to work on her designs. 

Time slipped by. 

The bedroom door creaked open. 

Nova knew it was Kael. She quickly locked her tablet and looked up. “What is it?” 

<ael carried a tray of food over, setting it on the table. His gaze flicked to the dark screen of her tablet before softening as he looked at her. “You didn’t eat lunch or dinner. You must be hungry. Have something–please?” 

Nova was about to say no, but her stomach rumbled loudly, betraying her. 

Kael let out a small laugh. 

Nova’s cheeks flushed. She looked down, biting her lower lip in embarrassment.

It had been so long since he’d seen her this shy, this cute. Kael’s heart melted. He reached out, brushing her hair back from her face. “Eat. 111 change your bandages after.” 

He pressed a fork into her hand, then pulled up a stool and sat beside her. He lifted her leg onto his lap, pulling a tube of ointment out of his pocket. His movements were gentle, careful–as if he was handling something fragile. 

“I can do it myself…” Nova frowned, trying to pull her leg back. But he held it firmly, leaving her no room to resist. Eventually, she gave up, letting him do as he pleased. 

Kael knew her taste perfectly. Every dish on the tray was something she loved. 

Nova was truly hungry, so she ate more than she’d planned. But even though the food was familiar–exactly how she liked it–it tasted like sawdust in her mouth. 

“Good, right?” Kael asked, his voice warm. “Want more? I can go get seconds.” 

Nova tightened her grip on the fork, shaking her head. “No, thank you.” 

Kael didn’t press her. Just seeing her eat something eased the tightness in his chest. He took his time applying the ointment, his eyes never leaving her face–he wanted to stay with her a little longer. 

“Nova…” 

“The bandages are done. You can go now,” she said, cutting him off. Her eyes were downcast, avoiding his. 

Kael stared at her, his heart sinking when he saw no sign of softening in her expression. He stood up, his voice quiet. “I’ll be in the study next door. Call me if you need anything.” 

Nova didn’t respond. She picked up her phone, scrolling through the news, as if he wasn’t even there. 

Kael’s throat felt dry. He knew she didn’t want to talk to him right now. He cleaned up the tray silently and left the bedroom, closing the door softly behind him. 

As soon as he was gone, Nova’s gaze faltered. She continued scrolling through her phone, her mind elsewhere–until a notification popped up.
