“Do yourself a favor, kid. Don’t do what I did. Don’t push your feelings for Enya down because you think someone might balk against it. After this, I doubt the council will question any decision you make. She’s only got a few months before she can go to the Academy, so neither of you has very long to decide.”
“Thanks, Alpha James.”
“Anytime. So, what are the odds that I’ll get to interview asshole Dorian?” he asks, grinning.
“I think that’s up to Councilman Johnathon,” I say, knowing what good interrogators my parents are and that Alpha James is just as good.
We join Enya and the others, including the council members for breakfast. There is a lot of conversation between my parents and their friends, but the other three council members remain quiet, watching the interactions of the others.
“What do you need for today, Councilman Johnathon?” I ask.
“I’d like to meet with Alpha Enya and Alpha Shane this morning and we are going to re–interview the detainees. Now that we’ve found the silver, we can confront them on that and their lies,” he says.
“I believe Alpha James was going to request that he be allowed to participate in the interviews,” I say.
“Yes, he’s mentioned/that more than once,” Councilwoman Charlotte says, grinning.

“Councilman, what happens now? I mean, we know that those in the cells were involved. What’s going to happen to them?” I ask.
“The only one that is still a question for me is Violet. I’m going to let Councilwoman Zara interview her this morning and if she feels that she is innocent, we’ll request that she be released.”
“I have no problem with that,” I say.
“The others will be remanded into custody. We have vehicles coming today to pick them up. I believe that our financial investigators are making progress with following the money and once they have that, it should be the final piece that we need to put most of these individuals away for the rest of their lives.”
“There is at least one more person that I’m worried about,” I say.
“There’s two actually,” Shane says, leaning forward. “Isiah and Caleb. Both are friendly with all of the ones in the cells. We need to watch them.”
“Hmmm,” Councilman Johnathon says, then grins. “Perhaps I’ll let two.” Alpha James interview those two.”
Even though Alpha James is in the middle of a conversation, his head pops up and he grins and Councilman Johnathon.
“You’re speaking my language, Councilman.”

After breakfast, I look at Alpha Enya. “I’d like to interview you first, Alpha.”
“Alright,” she says, giving me a look that tells me she doesn’t trust my
intentions.

“Use Braden’s office, Enya. I think Alpha Benjamin is still searching through the financials in Shane’s office,” Alpha Christian says. I haven‘ t missed that he’s never called the office his. He always references it as Alpha Shane’s. He seems very clear about his role here.
“Okay,” she says, her look becoming much warmer when she turns her gaze to him. “Follow me, Councilman,” she says, turning away.
I follow her to the office space in the packhouse. When we enter the room, she closes the door and gestures for me to have a seat. Rather than sit at the desk as I expected, she sits beside me.
“What can I do for you,
Councilman?”
“First, I want you to know that anything that is said in this room remains confidential. There will be no retaliation of any sort for anything that you tell me today.”
Chapter 110
Enya turns to look at me, as if asking if I’m okay being left alone with Alpha James. I’m sure she’s wondering if this is about last night. If it were a council member, I’d be concerned. But with Alpha James, I know that whatever is on his mind will come out eventually and that it’s all from a place of concern about me, Enya, or Shane.
“I’ll meet you in there,” I say, winking at her.
She nods and looks at me again before walking inside. He waits until everyone has passed us then turns to me.
“You want to tell me what’s going on with you and that young Alpha?” he says, getting straight to the point.
I sigh. I could lie, but it would be a waste of both of our time and Alpha James would take it personally that I disrespected him like that.
“I talked to Dad about it,” I say, running my fingers through my hair. “We think it’s possible that Enya’s my mate, but because she’s underage, we can’t be sure.”
“And how do you feel about that?” he asks.
“My wolf is doing backflips in his excitement. I want her to go to the Academy

think it will do wonders for her self–esteem and will help her work through her grief over the loss of her parents. But …”
“But the sex class,” he says.
“Right.”
“You know it’s not like that.”
“I do. Obviously, I do. I adore Talia, but there was nothing between us except friends with classroom benefits.”
“It would be the same for her.”
“Except she’s a virgin.”

“Ahhh, and you don’t want some other man to be her first. Is she unwilling to allow you to be her first?”
I huff. “On the contrary, the little minx is always trying to get me to lose control around her.”
He grins. “So what’s the problem?”
“I’m her guardian.”
“For nine months,” he says.
“I just don’t think the council will look favorably on me if I begin a relationship with Enya before she goes off to the Academy. And what if I’m wrong? What if she’s not my mate?”
“What if you’re right? Are you going to let some other Alpha be her first everything?”
I sigh again. “I’ve already kissed her.

He raises an eyebrow at me, and I scrub my hands over my face, hissing my frustration.
“She and Shane have quickly become extremely important to me. It’s partly because of my role, but I like them, both of them. They’re hurting right now, and I can’t trust that someone else would look after them the way that I am. With everything else that we’re coming across in this pack, I can’t risk the council pushing me out and putting someone else here as their guardians. It’s not a risk I’m willing to take with either of them,” I say emphatically.
“Maybe you should talk to the council while they’re here. At least talk to Councilm Johnathon. From what I’ve seen, he’s very happy with what you’ve discovered in the short time you’ve been here.
“Yes, but not all of them feel that way,” I say.
“Councilman Felix is butt hurt that you outranked his nephew who couldn’t have gotten his name on the leaderboard if he was the only one competing for it,” he says drolly, making me snort out a laugh.
