“You mean we should do what Christian and Enya are doing?” I ask.
My mother raises an eyebrow. “I don’t know what Christian and Enya are doing.”
I shrug. “Enya said that Christian is doing what they taught him in the Academy. She said he‘ s giving her a massage. I don’t understand how that helps with the sex class.”
“That’s because you’ve never listened when your father and I tried to explain it to you. Are you ready to listen now?” she asks.
I nod again.
She explains the entire process of the sex class and how it’s so much more than sex. It’s about connecting with your partner, or eventually, your mate.
“Can we go backwards after having sex?” I ask her.
“Of course you can. Does Shane know how you feel about being together this time?”
“I told him that it wasn’t good and maybe he needed to speak to Christian.”
“Christian will know what to tell him. It will be similar to what I’ve said to you. You should call him, talk to him, let him know that you want to slow things down and start differently.”
“Alright. But what if … what if it’s still terrible?”
“Here’s the thing, baby girl. If it’s still terrible, it’s because one or both of you aren’t trying. If you both truly care about each other and getting this right, if you take your time and figure it out, it won’t just be good. It will be fucking incredible.”
I look up and see my mother’s soft, loving eyes watching me closely.

I throw my arms around my mother’s neck. “I love you, Mom.”

I stand up, wipe my eyes, then make my way to my room.
I grab my phone and sit on my bed, staring at his number before finally hitting dial.
He answers immediately.
“Tiana! Are you okay?”
“Hey, Shane. We need to talk,” I say.
“Yeah. Yeah, we do. I talked to Christian.”
“I talked to my mom. Tell me, what did Christian have to say?”

Talking to Shane about having sex with my sister is on the top of my list of things I hope I never have to do again. But, while it was uncomfortable for me because I know we are talking about Sebastiana, it’s obvious that Shane is very upset and needs someone to talk to. He no longer has a father figure, and I’m not that person to him. But as a mentor, I can act like an older brother to him.
When he walked into my office, he looked totally defeated.
“Shane, what happened?” I ask, instantly concerned.
“I screwed it all up. I don’t even know what I did, I just know I messed things up.”
I walk around the desk and sit beside him. “Start from the beginning.”
He doesn’t look at me, which already tells me that this is a difficult conversation for him. He rarely avoids eye contact unless his emotions are high.
“Tiana and I were together last night. I thought it was good, but … before she left, she said it wasn’t, and I don’t know what I did wrong.” Now he does look at me. “What if I messed things up with her?”
