“I’ll see you in a week for my birthday party, Renz!” she says.
“And you’d better be at mine. Enya,” he says, before turning to see his parents who are waiting for him. As he turns. I see it, the number two displayed along with many other wolf tags.
I hear his father whoop with pride as he sees his son’s achievement, but my eyes are glued to Enya. As soon as her eyes meet mine, everything that has been wrong in my world settles.
She’s back and I can already see the difference in her. Her body is leaner, and more muscular with the advanced warrior training that she did, and her stride is more sure. But it’s her eyes that tell me how much she’s changed. She left as an uncertain teenager. She’s returning as a confident
woman.
When I look at her necklace of achievements, I smile. She walks up grinning at me.
“Number five, huh? That’s pretty damn good for a woman who didn’t expect to go to the Academy a year ago.”
“Well, I’m no Numero Uno,” she says, grinning even wider, “but I’ll take it.”
“Congratulations,” I say, desperately wanting to hug her, but not sure where we stand any longer.
The grin falls away, and she becomes serious.
“Thank you, Christian. You were right to send me to the Academy. For a while I thought you were trying to get rid of me, and even when I realized you weren’t, I didn’t understand…”
“You can’t, until you’re there,” I say.
“Exactly.”
We stare at each other for a long moment.
“Well, let’s get you home. Shane’s excited to see you. You’re not the only one who has changed while you’ve been gone,” I say, reaching out to take her bags.
She walks with me back to the car, then follows me to the trunk as I put her bags in. When I close the trunk, I turn to her. Something’s on her mind so I wait for her to say it.

She looks thoughtful for a moment, then she looks me in the eye.

“I want something from you. Christian,” she says, waving when Lorenzo and his parents drive by. honking and waving at us.
I wave at them too, then turn back to her.
“What do you want, Enya?”
She steps up to me, eliminating the space between us and putting her hand on my chest. She looks at her hand before meeting my gaze again.
“I want to be with you, as equals, before my birthday. I don’t know if we’re mates, Christian, but if we’re not. I’d like to have at least one night where we come together as equal partners who want to be with the other person. I ask this without knowing if you’ve started seeing anyone else…” she begins, looking down.
“I’m not.” I say quickly, my heart nearly beating out of my chest. I have no idea what it means that she wants to be with me, but there is absolutely nothing in this world that would make me say no.
She smiles and looks up at me. “Then, would you be willing to be with me again, before my birthday, as equals?”
I stroke my fingers over her cheek. I take a deep breath of her soft, floral scent, the scent that I’ve missed desperately, the scent that no longer fills her bedroom. I know because I’ve spent more than my fair share of nights in her room, just breathing in her scent.
“I would love nothing more than to be with you, Enya,” I say.
