Chapter 36

I don’t have all the same classes with Tiana, but today, Friday, I have Finance class with her. I can tell that this class is her nemesis. I know from her time in my pack that every time I mentioned money, she’d wrinkle her nose and tell me to just let her know what I needed. Where Enya was good at managing the financial side of the kitchen and food preparation, I had to adjust to Tiana wanting a budget to run off of. In the end, it worked, but that means that my girl doesn’t have any more knowledge about how to manage finances than she did before she started helping me run the pack.

All the Alpha heirs are in this class, and since Cassandra is in the finance track, she’s in all the Alpha heir finance classes and then some. I’ve already started considering hiring her as my financial planner once we graduate. As a young Alpha getting started, she’ll need the work, and as someone I’ve spent six months with, I’ll know that I can trust her with my finances.

“So, I think if you diversify your accounts like this,” Cassandra is saying to Justin as we walk to class together. “Then you’ll see the increase in dividends. Once those start coming in, you can use them to get your pack out of debt.”

“I could kiss you, Cassie!” Justin says. Apparently, his father isn’t very good with money, and their pack is at risk of financial ruin. Justin added all the financial classes to his course schedule in an effort to save his pack from destitution.

“It won’t help in the short term, I’m still working on some ideas around that, but it will help long term and give your pack more security.”

I look at Tiana and pull her into a side hug when I see the pained look on her face.

“Resources, trusts, dividends…” I begin.

“If this is your idea of foreplay, you’re going about it ALL wrong,” she says, making me laugh.

“I don’t know how you can’t find this fascinating!” Cassie says excitedly.

“I don’t know how you can possibly get excited about it. It’s so boring!” T says.

“You say boring, I say constant. I love that there is no emotion when you deal with numbers,” she begins.

“I beg to differ on that point. I feel very emotional about the state of my pack,” Justin says.

“What I mean is, classes like Dealing with Crisis are all about emotion. You have to think through the problem, know the person who is having the issue, and the basis for their response to the problem in order to work it out. There are any number of variables that can make up how you respond to someone in crisis. And if you get it wrong, everything could blow up in your face. With numbers, two plus two ALWAYS equals four. It’s constant. To me, that feels safe. It makes me feel confident that once I know how to calculate the numbers, I always have the right answer.’

“If that were true, Cassic, then everyone would be rich,” Cole says as we walk into the classroom.

“Well, investments are different because there is a level of humanness to it. People invest in things that speak to them. They don’t always do it based on what the numbers say. And then, things change so what was a good investment three years ago, may not be now. But in the end, the numbers are the numbers. You just have to adjust for the changes in life when it comes to investing.”
