Jason POVÂ
I couldn’t help but keep staring at that woman as she left the restaurant.Â
There was definitely something strange but familiar about her that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Something in the way she moved, the set of her shoulders when she was nervous.Â
Brittany’s voice cut through my spiraling thoughts. “I can’t believe you got that human whore pregnant while you were supposed to keep searching for your fated mate.”Â
“Don’t.” The Alpha command cracked out of me like a physical force, making everyone at nearby tables flinch.” Don’t you ever speak about her like that again.”Â
The image of Laila alone in some sterile hospital room, scared and in pain, haunted me.Â
If she’d been carrying my child, what hell had she gone through without me?Â
Marcus cleared his throat carefully. “There’s more, Alpha.”Â
My blood turned to ice. “What do you mean, more?”Â
“The investigator found additional records. All kinds of hospital files…” He paused, choosing his words carefully. “The child and mother might have survived. ”Â
Everything stopped.Â
“Survived? But you mentioned that Laila’s files have been completely canceled… ” Mother whispered, her voice full of wonder and pain. “And you’re sure it was a girl?”Â
Marcus nodded. “That was mentioned on the last examination record we could find. And the mother was admitted in distress. Premature labor brought on by stress and poor nutrition. But there were complications during delivery…”Â
“That doesn’t sound like survived to me,” Brittany commented with a sneer.Â
“The records show they were discharged after a week of intensive care,” Marcus continued. “But then they disappeared from all official records. There are no death certificates found either.”Â
Complete radio silence. Like they’d vanished into thin air.Â
“What are the possibilities you found?” I heard myself ask, trying to steady my voice.Â
“Maybe new identities. Professional disappearance. Or…” Marcus paused, looking at me hesitantly.Â
New identities. It would have meant Laila had help. Resources. At least she hadn’t been completely alone.Â
“Or their death certificates just haven’t been found yet,” Brittany added coldly. “Or maybe the kid survived but Laila didn’t.”Â
The casual way she said it made my stomach turn. Like she was discussing the weather instead of the possible death of someone who’d once been part of our family.Â

“We need to find out if they are still alive,” I said firmly. “Keep searching for them.”Â
“I’m not sure about that,” Father said quietly. “Why don’t we just accept that they’re gone?”Â
“What-“I turned around, facing him.Â
“Then even if the bastard child is still alive, she will have no knowledge of her heritage and can’t challenge pack succession or cause any trouble.” Father seemed irritated while he said this; he began rubbing his chest, clearly agitated.Â
The idea of my daughter growing up thinking she was an orphan made me sick.Â
“Because she’s family,” Mother said firmly, her voice carrying the strength that had made her a formidable Luna. “Whatever mistakes were made, if that child is alive, she will be Jason’s daughter. She’s pack blood.”Â
“She’s a bastard,” Father corrected harshly. “Pack law is clear-”Â
“Pack law can go to hell,” Mother snapped, surprising everyone. “She’s an innocent child. Our granddaughter. If she is alive, we need to find out.”Â
The word hung in the air between us.Â
Granddaughter.Â
I watched my Dad’s expression shift as the reality sank in. He looked ill. This wasn’t just about political damage control anymore.Â
This was family.Â
“Thank you, Mom,” I said quietly.Â
She reached across and squeezed my hand. “That little girl didn’t choose any of this. She deserves to know she has family who would love her.”Â
But even as hope flickered in my chest, doubt gnawed at me. If Laila was alive, if she’d hidden our daughter from me for six years… why?Â
Laila POVÂ
“The past is the past,” Riley said gently, pulling me back to the present. “What matters now is Ava’s surgery.”Â
Right. The surgery that Dr. Martinez had explained would be necessary within the next two months because of Ava’s worsening condition.Â
“The doctor said her blood type and her heart issue are difficult problems to treat,” I said, wiping my eyes. “Her blood type is uncommon. Alpha blood, inherited from Jason. They need to gather resources from multiple blood banks because finding compatible donors is so difficult.”Â
“And her heart?”Â
“It’s a rare congenital heart defect. So rare that Dr. Martinez wants to consult with an expert before doing the surgery.”Â
“Did he say what caused it?”Â

“It’s related to the difficult birth. Poor nutrition during pregnancy.” The guilt was crushing. “If I’d had prenatal care, if I hadn’t been working myself to death…”Â
properÂ
“Stop.” Riley’s voice was firm. “You did everything you could with what you had. Ava is alive and healthy because you fought for her every single day.”Â
But the guilt remained. My daughter was facing surgery because I’d been too proud. Too hurt. Too stubborn to reach out for help.Â
Even if that help would’ve come from a man who’d already made his priorities clear.Â
When I got back to the hospital, I realized with growing panic that I’d lost my wallet somewhere. I frantically searched through my purse, my pockets, the car.Â
Nothing.Â
“Shit,” I muttered, earning a concerned look from a passing nurse.Â
Riley frowned. “What’s wrong?”Â
“My wallet. It must’ve fallen out at the restaurant.” I closed my eyes, thinking about what was inside. Credit cards, ID, insurance information.Â
And tucked into a hidden compartment, a photo of me and newborn Ava.Â
A photo where I still looked like my old self. Blonde hair, thinner face, the unmistakable vulnerability of a girl who’d just given birth alone and scared.Â
If Jason found that wallet, if he saw that photo…Â
“I’ll call the restaurant,” I said, pulling out my phone with shaking hands.Â
The hostess who answered was cheerful and helpful. “Oh yes, someone did turn in a wallet. A gentleman found it by table seven.”Â
“Can I come pick it up?”Â
“Actually, he took it with him. Said you two knew each other and he would return it personally to you.”Â
My blood turned to ice. “Did you get his name?”Â
“No, but he was very handsome. Well–dressed. Had the most incredible green eyes.”Â
I hung up without another word.Â
Jason had my wallet. Maybe he had seen whatever was inside.Â
And he was on his way here.Â
I raced up to Ava’s room, my heart pounding so hard I thought it might burst. She was sitting up in bed, coloring in one of her books.Â
“Mama!” Her face lit up when she saw me. “I heard a funny story from the doctor earlier…”Â

Then I noticed her eyes shifting to the direction of the entrance.Â
“Daddy!”Â
The word exploded from Ava’s mouth as she pointed over my shoulder with pure joy.Â
I turned around slowly. Every muscle in my body tensing for fight or flight.Â
Jason stood in the doorway, holding my wallet in his hands.Â
