Chapter 5
Even when our son was just a baby, I noticed something strange.
Whenever he cried, my husband could quiet him almost instantly.
I thought he just had a gift with kids.
Until one night when the baby was screaming, I walked in and saw him crushing up sleeping pills and mixing them in a bottle.
I rushed the baby to the ER that night.
I confronted him and he looked lost.
“I didn’t know! He wouldn’t stop crying–I thought a little wouldn’t hurt!”
I wanted to believe him.
Until another day, I came home early from a shift.
I’d left the baby with him.
He was on the couch, gaming like nothing mattered…
And our son was hanging from the wall, tied up with a rope.
I lost it. Screamed at him.
He said, “I saw it online–it’s how you teach babies discipline.”
After that, I never let him babysit again.
But as our boy grew up, he still had his “methods.”

Chapter 5
He bought a giant wooden paddle–said it was to teach the kid “respect.”
Whenever the boy cried, he’d lash out.
Smack him with that damn paddle.
I tried to stop him.
But Linda–his precious mom–stepped in.
“This is how fathers show authority. Boys need to be raised tough.”
That night, our kid was so scared he spiked a fever.
I confronted my husband again.
He blamed Linda.
“She wanted a granddaughter. That’s why I’m harder on him.”
Since the day our son was born, he never got a break from his dad.
The criticism, the pressure, the silence.
He grew up scared to talk around him.
He’d stutter. Freeze up.
One day, when he was maybe five, he tugged at my sleeve.
“Mom… why doesn’t Dad like me?”
It broke me.
I knelt down, wiped his tears, and lied.

“Of course he does, sweetie. He just doesn’t know how to show it.”
He nodded, but I saw the doubt in his eyes.
Even now, when he looks at his dad, there’s distance.
But also hope. Like he still wants to be loved.
I held him close. My heart was aching.
Then I asked him something I’d never dared to before.
“If one day, you had to choose–would you stay with me or with Daddy?”
He hugged me tight. His voice tiny, but sure.
“I want Mommy.”
I let out a breath I’d been holding for years.
Held him tighter.
“Mommy loves you so much.”
We talked a long time that day.
At one point, he pulled out a little box of chocolates.
Looked nervous.
“A man gave this to me today.”
“I didn’t want it, but he made me take it. I didn’t eat any.”
My heart stopped.

I put the candy away and bought him a new box myself.
I told him, “You did the right thing. Never take stuff from strangers.”
My husband? Thought I was overreacting.
“Come on. The guy was probably just being nice.”
I didn’t say anything then.
But now, thinking back…
I saw the way he looked at our son.
Cold. Distant. Calculating.
I glared at him. “What the hell is that look for?”
His face went pale.
He looked at the baby and gave a weird little laugh.
“Another boy.”
That hit a nerve.
I nearly died giving birth to his kid–and that’s what he says?
But whatever. Divorce is happening. And soon.
The kids? They’re mine. Period.
I threw him out of the room.
Then suddenly, his phone started ringing on the nightstand.

He forgot it.
I was so pissed off I picked it up without thinking.
And that’s when I heard her voice.
All giggles and sugar–sweet.
“Jakey, baby, your daughter needs school supplies!”
“Send us some money, okay?”
My blood ran cold.
It felt like lightning hit me right in the chest.
