Chapter 4
Too busy climbing the corporate ladder, networking, thinking that paying for stuff made me a good mom.
I couldn’t say anything. Just gripped the suitcase handle tighter.
My silence made him bolder.
“What, nothing to say? Evelyn, let me tell you something–Naomi’s got ME. That’s all she needs. She doesn’t need you showing up with your ice queen bullshit!”
He was practically spitting in my face now. “A control freak like you doesn’t DESERVE to be anyone’s mother! No wonder she never bonded with you. She avoids you like you’ve got the plague!”
“You really wanna fly out there and stress her out so bad she drops out?”
It felt like someone parked a truck on my chest.
All the pain from my last life came flooding back.
I stared at this man–this twisted, hateful stranger–my husband of twenty years.
All that tenderness, all that love–it was bullshit. All of it.
To him, I’d always been worthless.
I took a breath, swallowed my tears, and my voice came out steady and cold:
“Crane, we need to-”
My phone rang.

Naomi.
I answered. Her voice was shaking, half–crying, completely shocked.
“Mom! Why–why did you just send me two hundred thousand dollars?!”
Loud enough for Crane to hear every word.
He went completely still.
Then he whipped around and stared at my phone like it was a live grenade, his face turning white.
He lunged forward and snatched it out of my hand, screaming into it:
“Naomi! Your mother’s having a mental breakdown! She just moved ALL our savings into your account! That’s our emergency fund! Our LIFELINE!”
His voice was dripping with fake panic, like some concerned dad trying to save the family.
“She’s been talking crazy–divorce, running off with everything–Naomi, baby, you gotta transfer it back to Dad’s account! I’ll keep it safe, I promise!”
Oscar–worthy performance.
Made me want to puke.
I reached for the phone.
He shoved me–hard. I slammed into the closet, pain shooting up my spine.
He covered the phone and hissed at me through his teeth:
“Try it again. I dare you. You want Naomi to know what a psycho her mom is?”
I just stared at him. Empty.

On the other end, Naomi sounded terrified: “Dad, what’s happening? Why is she doing this?”
“Hell if I know! She’s lost her damn mind!” Crane yelled. “Just send the money back or we’re SCREWED!”
I took a breath. When he looked away for half a second, I lunged and grabbed the phone back.
“Naomi, ignore him.” My voice was shaking but I kept it together. “That money’s yours. I’m not crazy. I just don’t want you suffering anymore.”
“Suffering? Mom, what are you talking about?”

Crane’s face went gray. He tried to grab the phone again.
I stepped back and shouted into it:
“I don’t want you living off ramen and peanut butter for four years! I don’t want you too broke to buy yourself clothes! I don’t want people talking shit about you because your mom’s some cheap bitch!”
Dead silence.
