Chapter 169 

“How did you get in here?‘ Emily looked up, startled. 

A stranger stood before her, someone she didn’t recognize. But next to him was a familiar face–Daniel. 

In her rush to get inside, Emily had completely forgotten about Daniel. 

“Since I came with you, I’m obviously sticking around till the end,” he said, meeting her eyes. 

Emily thought she saw a flicker of hurt in his gaze, like a puppy left out in the rain. 

Shaking off the unsettling thought, she avoided his eyes and asked, “Thanks. Who’s this with you?” 

Daniel replied, “A lawyer. Figured you might need one. After hearing Mr. Johnson, it looks like I was right.” 

No wonder people called him a legend. She hadn’t even told him what was going on, and he already seemed to know. 

“I’ll leave the rest to you,” Daniel said to the lawyer, Stanley Ortiz. 

Stanley was a top–tier criminal lawyer. This case was small potatoes for him; he wouldn’t even bother if it were anyone else. 

“Don’t worry,” Stanley said calmly. 

Emily quickly realized the importance of Stanley. As soon as he approached the police and met the lawyer Aiden had brought, the other lawyer looked like a rookie, showing Stanley nothing but respect and fear. 

“It’s late. Let’s head home,” Daniel suggested. 

Emily grabbed Wren and prepared to leave. 

But Aiden quickly caught up with them. 

“Emily!” 

She stopped at the sound of her name and gave Wren a look, signaling her to get in the car first. 

Turning to Aiden, she asked, “What do you want? If you’re here to plead for Chase, don’t bother. Instead, you should advise him to be more careful. As a public figure, he should be mindful of his actions. If he keeps this up, he’ll only bring about his own downfall.” 

The entertainment industry is all about fame and fortune. It’s a fast way to make money and find opportunities. But it’s also full of temptations. If Chase keeps acting like this, he’ll soon find himself in another trap. 

In her previous life, she had seen many celebrities fall from grace, so she constantly reminded Chase to be cautious. He had grown impatient with her warnings, but in the end, her advice saved his career. 

“He made mistakes, but he’s still your brother. Helping an outsider to make things difficult for him–isn’t that a bit heartless?”

“What do you mean?” 

“I’ve said enough!” Emily snapped and got in the car. 

Aiden wanted to keep asking, but Daniel, who had been silent, spoke up with a calm yet intimidating tone. “Stop bothering Emily. If your don’t care about her, someone else does. If you make her suffer again, I will step in.” 

He was openly admitting his feelings for Emily. 

Faced with Daniel’s imposing presence, Aiden opened his mouth but couldn’t find the words. He stepped back, letting Emily’s car drive 

away. 

Emily took Wren back to the villa. Daniel lingered, clearly wanting to speak with her. Sensing this, Wren quickly excused herself, giving Emily a playful wink when Daniel wasn’t looking, as if to say, “Go for it!” 

Emily blushed and thanked Daniel, as usual. “Thanks again for today. I feel like I owe you a lot. If you need anything, let me know, and I’ll see if I can help.” 

She hated owing people favors. It made her uneasy, so she wanted to repay him as soon as possible. This was her way of keeping things professional. 

Daniel sighed inwardly. She had a lot on her mind and was hard to get close to. He had a long way to go. 

He leaned in slightly, closing the distance between them. They were so close they could smell each other’s faint scents. Emily found his scent as alluring as he was, making her heart race and her mind a bit chaotic. This feeling made her step back. 

“Any request?” Daniel noticed her movement but didn’t mention it. He smiled gently, like the sun melting the ice. 

Emily’s ears turned slightly red, though she wasn’t sure why. “Well, not anything. It has to be reasonable and something I can do.” 

Daniel saw she was overthinking and chuckled. His voice was magnetic and inviting. “Don’t worry, it’s nothing too difficult. I need to visit Smith Villa soon, but given the recent poisoning attempts, I’m not comfortable going alone. I’d like you to come with me. Would you?” 

Emily was surprised. She thought about the two times Daniel had been poisoned. Even with skilled doctors around him, he was still targeted. The person behind it was very cunning. And since she was treating him, it was best if he didn’t get hurt again. 

Understanding this, Emily didn’t hesitate. “Okay, I’ll go with you. When?” 

“Tomorrow. But to avoid suspicion, I’d like you to pretend to be my girlfriend. If you can find out who’s behind the attacks, money won’t be an issue.” 

Daniel was treating Emily as a highly skilled doctor. Emily sensed this. She wasn’t surprised he figured out her true identity so quickly. Since he didn’t bring it up, she wouldn’t either. 

Pretending to be his girlfriend felt a bit intimate, Emily met Daniel’s gaze. His deep eyes held a hint of anticipation, making it hard for 

her to refuse. 

“Okay.”

“Great. I’ll pick you up tomorrow,” Daniel said, trying to hide his smile. 

Emily nodded. She waved goodbye and went inside. 

Daniel stood by the car, the night quiet except for the sound of his breathing. He leaned against the car, his long legs casting a shadow. He smiled confidently, knowing Emily was out of sight, and then finally headed home. 

Emily didn’t know any of this. Once inside, she went to find Wren. In her previous life, Wren and Chase hadn’t interacted like this. Things had changed, but fate brought them together again. Emily was worried and needed to gauge Wren’s thoughts.
