“Who sent these flowers? And has Mr. Smith eaten anything with almonds recently?”
When it came to Daniel’s safety, everything else had to be put aside.
Charles called the butler over with a serious expression.
*These were sent by Ian’s daughter–in–law, Yara, a short while ago.”
Emily’s eyes flashed upon hearing this.

James’s mother, Yara, had never liked the idea of Emily being her daughter–in–law. After James insisted on their engagement despite opposition, Yara’s disdain for Emily only grew.

In her previous life, Emily had broken off her engagement with James, partly due to James’s betrayal and partly because Yara had played a significant role in pushing for it.
“Just a relative of the Smith family. What? Do they think they can plot against Daniel to become the head of the Smith family? Bring her here and question her thoroughly!” Charles’s voice was cold, his anger palpable.
Emily frowned.
After a moment of hesitation, she spoke up, “Wait.”
“What? Are you defending her, or do you know her?” Charles’s icy gaze bore into Emily.
The aura of someone raised in a powerful family was unmistakable and intimidating to most.
But Emily remained unfazed. She looked directly at Daniel and said, ‘Since I discovered the poison, let me say this: Yara might not have the brains to use such a subtle poison. Even if we investigate, we shouldn’t alert her.”
Charles realized he had misunderstood.
Daniel nodded and instructed York, “Investigate discreetly.”
Then, with a stern face, he ordered, ‘Charles, apologize to the doctor.”
Charles, though embarrassed, didn’t hesitate. He apologized straightforwardly, “Sorry, I misunderstood you.”
However, thinking about the undetectable poison, even the family doctor hadn’t noticed it.
Charles swallowed his pride and asked, “Doctor, we haven’t found the mastermind yet, and their use of poison is unpredictable. Could you stay for a while to prevent Daniel from being poisoned again? His health can’t take much more. Don’t worry, money is no issue!”
Emily frowned but didn’t immediately agree.

Wearing a mask and living together increased the risk of exposure.
Charles, thinking she was still upset about his earlier rudeness, gritted his teeth and made a bold offer.
“As long as you agree, I’ll do anything you ask, as long as it’s not against morals or the law.”
Emily couldn’t help but admire Charles a bit more. His willingness to do so much for a friend was enviable.
“Sorry, I’m very busy and might not have the time…”
“Whatever you are busy with, I can help deal with it!”

‘Let me finish!” Emily sighed at Charles’s urgency. “But I can recommend someone, Emily. She lives next door and can check Mr. Smith’s meals daily and prepare nutritious dishes.”
Charles looked uncertainly at Emily, “Is she reliable?”
Daniel almost choked on his drink. He hadn’t expected her to recommend herself so directly. It was unexpected but fitting for her style.
Emily noticed Daniel’s smile and couldn’t help but look at him.
Daniel suppressed his smile and said calmly, “She’ll do.”
Emily was pleased but clarified, “But this will be a separate fee!”
Money from two jobs, all for herself. Perfect!
Daniel pressed his fist to his lips to stifle a laugh. He hadn’t realized she was such a little money–grubber. Knowing her true identity made her even more interesting.
“Agreed!”
Emily snapped her fingers. “Since I recommended her, she’s reliable. I’ll be off now. For the next treatment, Emily will update you on Mr. Smith’s recovery.”
Having resolved the identity issue and secured another income, Emily left with a spring in her step.
Her good mood lasted until she reported to the new professional lab the next day.
Kurt had been eagerly awaiting her arrival.
“Emily, don’t waste your talent on other trivial matters. You should focus entirely on research. The project team for your proposed research direction is ready. You need to guide them.”
Kurt showed no embarrassment about his enthusiasm for a newcomer.
Emily sighed. The experiment’s outcome was already known to her, but the process had to be followed.

Kurt, not one to take credit for others‘ work, agreed. As long as you provide the data and guidance, your name will be first on the paper.”
Kurt then introduced Emily to the lab team. After a brief explanation of the new project, they got to work.
Emily finally had a moment to rest when Sophia called.
“Emily, where are you? Are you in class?” Sophia sounded urgent.
I’m at the physics lab. What’s up?”
“Stay in the lab or leave the campus immediately. Your father is here looking for you.”
Sophia was exasperated. How could Eli treat his daughters so differently? Emily had been lost for years and lived a hard life, yet he doted on Bianca.
Feeling for Emily, Sophia quickly warned her. “He seems hostile. Luckily, he doesn’t know you switched majors. Otherwise, he’d have found you already.”
Emily guessed the reason. It was always the same few issues. She wanted to see how long they could manage without her.
“Don’t worry about him!” Emily said. “I’ll handle it.”
Sophia, determined to help, said, “I’ll go see what’s going on!” and hung up.
Eli, with his bodyguards, had already reached Bianca’s department. He had asked for Bianca’s schedule, knowing Emily shared the same major and was diligent.
“Bianca, your dad’s here! He must really love you to visit despite his busy schedule at the Johnson Group,” Lily called out.
Classmates, aware of Bianca’s privileged background but not all knowing about the Johnson Group, were eager to meet Eli, hoping it might help their future careers.
Lavinia rushed over upon hearing Eli’s arrival.
‘Dad…”
Under everyone’s envious gaze, Bianca ran to Eli, her face flushed with excitement.
Eli nodded but asked, “Where’s Emily?”
