Ava glanced around quickly. “It’s fine. I know you’ve got plenty of people to network with too.”
“Where you headed?” he asked.
She looked right at him. “I woke up way too carly. Feeling kinda out of it.”
“You going to lie down? I’ll walk you up,” Ethan said like he was talking about the weather.
Ava blinked. “No, seriously. I can go up on my own.”
Walking to the third floor with a guy? That was definitely going to raise eyebrows.
Ethan gave
her a soft look. “You scared of me, Ava? I just want to walk you up. Maybe chat a bit.”
The way
he said it made it sound harmless. Ava didn’t know how to shut him down. Ethan stayed right next to her, kept a respectful distance, and didn’t make any moves.
Grace had her eyes on the Morren sisters ever since lunch. When she saw Ava head upstairs, she couldn’t help herself and followed at a careful distance. Not too close, not too far. From a corner, she saw a man stop Ava and start talking to her.
She recognized him instantly. She’d overheard some people earlier. He was the youngest Chief Justice of the Supreme Court ever, and a Rank Double–S mental power user. Everyone said he was unstoppable. What caught her off guard was that he’d come looking for Ava. She saw it clearly–the way he looked at Ava. He tried to keep it cool, but his eyes gave him away. He liked her.
The realization hit Grace like a punch. She couldn’t understand how someone could have everything–status, family, and even men regular girls couldn’t dream of touching.
Jealousy streaked across her face. She held her breath and watched the two of them head upstairs together. Once they disappeared on the third floor, Grace stepped out of hiding and curled her lip. So much for being the innocent type. Inviting guys to sneak around with her? What a joke. And she and Jane had the nerve to call her a gold–digger?
Thinking she’d uncovered Ava’s dirty little secret, Grace crept up the stairs. She slipped off her heels, grabbed them, and tiptoed after them without making a sound.
At the door, Ava turned the knob. The room was spotless, neatly decorated, and soft beige everywhere, making it feel calm and cozy. On the coffee table, a bouquet of bright red roses stood out.
Ava looked at them for half a second, then turned to Ethan. “I’m here.”

“You’re not gonna invite me in?”
She hadn’t expected that.
Ethan saw her pause. “If it’s not cool, I’ll go. I just didn’t see you all morning and wanted a few minutes with you.”
Ava glanced at her watch. It wasn’t even 12:30 yet. She lowered her eyes and said, “Alright. Just for a little bit.”
The door shut behind them, cutting them off from everything else.
Grace smirked to herself. So much for Ava’s whole good–girl act. Letting a man into her room? Please. There’s no way they were just sipping tea. She was going to wait and see how long they stayed holed up.
She looked around and spotted a big window down the hall with thick curtains brushing the floor.
Inside, Ava moved around the room. She crouched by the coffee table, pulled out a box of tea, and grabbed a cup. The kettle on the side let out a low, steady rumble. “Want some tea? Or something else?” she asked.
Ethan didn’t sit. He just watched her move around. “Come sit down, Ava. You don’t need to make tea for me. I’m not thirsty.”
Ava was still smiling, but she wondered what kind of conversation could be had if they just sat. She still dropped some tea into the cup and poured in hot water. A sharp hiss filled the room as steam rose. The curled tea leaves unfurled and floated in the soft amber liquid. A rich scent filled the air.
“You talk. I’ll listen,” Ava said, passing the conversation to him. She had no idea how to start it.
“Ava, I don’t want this awkward wall between us. Can we stop acting like strangers?” Ethan smiled. “Oh–and did you like your gift?”
That perked her up. “It was way too extravagant. Jane said it was basically museum–level. I really can’t keep something that expensive.”
“If it stays in my family’s vault, it’s just a fancy thing collecting dust. Stuff like that means nothing without someone to wear it. I’d really love to see it on you someday. I-“A sharp sound hit the door. Ethan’s smile dropped, just for a second. Annoyance flickered across his face.
