After recording her biometric profile, Ms. Hayes personally escorted Ava to a small building and said, “This is The Heron’s Rest. You’re the first freshman assigned here today.”
Ava glanced at the building in front of her–five stories tall, with a gold–accented plaque bearing the words The Heron’s Rest.
She took the elevator to the third floor and scanned her iris to unlock the door.
The room was over a thousand square feet, with clearly designated functional zones and a smart, efficient layout. Sunlight poured through the windows, and the room was already equipped with a domestic assistant robot. Ava stood in the doorway of the luxurious single dorm room and couldn’t help but mutter, d*mn, this place is loaded. No wonder Starry Heavens was the number one university on Capitol Planet–clearly, they weren’t shy about spending
money.
From the window, she could see several other buildings in various architectural styles. She hadn’t paid much attention earlier, so she wasn’t sure what they were called.
Just as she opened her suitcase, her Holoband lit up with an incoming video call from Jane.
“How’s it going, Ava? Got everything sorted yet?”
Ava smiled and turned her Holoband’s camera around. “All set. Check this out–I’m staying at The Orchid Court. The room’s huge. I wasn’t expecting this at all.”
“Well, yeah, it’s Starry Heavens. The school’s got deep pockets. And The Orchid Court? Even though I’m at the Police Academy, I’ve heard of it.”
“They say not just anyone gets placed there. Looks like the school really values you! I’m so proud–you’re totally living up to being my dear sister. Keep it up!”
Ava hadn’t realized there was so much behind the placement. She’d noticed there weren’t many buildings in the area, but they all seemed high–end. Now she understood—clearly, the school sorted dorms by category, probably based on some kind of student evaluation.
After ending the call, Ava tapped open Theodore’s contact. Not wanting to disturb him if he was busy, she sent a quick message instead, letting him know she had completed her enrollment and moved into The Orchid Court. She also took the opportunity to thank him once again for his support and guidance.
To her surprise, his reply came almost immediately. ‘Ava, I didn’t really do much. Even without me, you would’ve made it into Starry Heavens. Mr. Mosse and the rest would’ve seen your potential. In the end, it’s your own excellence that brought you here.

Your military training will last for a month. Once enrollment is done, they’ll send all new students directly to the training base this afternoon. Don’t bring too much–they I issue uniforms on–site. Holobands will also be collected. You won’t have access to the outside worsh for a month.
A whole month of military training? Ava’s cheeks twitched.
If there was one major change from switching fields and starting college from scratch, it was this–military training. Back when she was on Alayna Planet, she’d skipped it altogether due to her grandfather’s failing health. With special approval from the principal, she’d been exempted.
Ava sighed. It wasn’t that she was afraid of training–it was just the idea of being out off from the world for a full month, no Holoband no communication… That felt a little suffocating
She glanced down at the messages from her matches and replied to each one individually. Then, in the group chat she posted a quick note about her upcoming training
Sure enough, by the afternoon, the campus broadcast instructed all freshmen to gather at the main field–they’d be heading to the military training base shortly.
As Ava headed downstairs, she ran into another girl. She was tall and graceful her back straight with chestnut–red hair and amber–colored eyes.
The girl—Queenie Yates–was coming up the stairs when she noticed Ava looking at her. She glanced up and saw a stunningly beautiful girl with jet–black hair and eyes—features increasingly rare these days.
Their eyes met briefly as they crossed paths.
Queenie paused and said. “Haven’t seen you around before. Did you just move into Orchid
Cour
Ava hadn’t expected her to speak, but she quickly responded, “Yes, I’m a freshman. Nice to meet you. I’m Ava Morren.”
“Nice to meet you, Ava. I’m Queenie Yates–your senior, I guess.”
The two of them exchanged a quick handshake.
“Heading to the field now?” Queenie asked.
Ava nodded. “Yeah, we’re being sent to the training base this afternoon.”
Queenie smiled. “The month–long training. If you’re selected as model cadet three times in a row, you’ll earn bonus credits. There’s a showcase performance at the end, too.

Extra credits? Ava’s eyes lit up. “Thanks for the tip, Queenie.”
“Don’t mention it.” Queenie waved it off. “What’s your major?”
“Agricultural Science.”
“Agricultural Science? Not many girls choose that.”
Ava’s eyes curved into a smile. “I like it. And my family supports me.”

After saying that, Queenie felt a twinge of regret–clearly, this girl wasn’t just some average freshman. Anyone who got placed in Orchid Court on day one had to be extraordinary.
Even Queenie herself had only been transferred to Orchid Court last year, and that had been after getting top marks in every subject—and more importantly, after awakening her primal
power.
Could this girl be an Awakened, too? At such a young age?
Queenie discreetly scanned her, trying to sense any power levels–but there was nothing. No reaction at all.
She chuckled to herself. Look at me, turning into one of those gossipy types. What’s gotten into me?
