“Obviously. No question!”Â
“No chance. Not doing it!”Â
Ava laughed the second she saw how serious they were. “Fine by me. I’ll take it.”Â

Noelle and Zoey exchanged looks and shook their heads. Who in their right mind volunteered to be model cadet?Â
A sharp whistle cut through the air. “Break’s over! Back in line!”Â
Ivan was already barking orders as the group of girls dragged themselves up off the grass.Â
“You’re already falling apart and we haven’t even started real training! What are you gonna do when it’s target drills and survival exercises?”Â
Ivan scanned the row of girls in front of him and felt a headache coming on. Why the hell did he get stuck with the girls‘ unit? He should’ve been with the guys. He could’ve pushed them hard without worrying they’d start crying.Â
Now he had to deal with all this fluff. They were gonna end up last, weren’t they?Â
“You. Step forward,” he said.Â
“Wait, me?” Ava pointed at herself. “Instructor Cavalli, you talking to me?”Â
“Yeah, you. Let’s go.”Â
Ivan had been watching the group from the start. Two girls had stood out. One was lazy and didn’t give a hoot about the training.Â
The other followed every order. Stayed sharp. Never complained. That was Ava. He kept an eye on her.Â
Sure, she was gorgeous. But Ivan wasn’t thinking about that. He needed someone he could count on. Someone who wouldn’t make him look bad. She was it.Â
“What’s your name?” he asked.Â
Ava stood tall. “Ava Morren, sir.”Â
“Good. You’re squad captain now. Think you can handle that?”Â
She blinked, then grinned. “Yes, sir! I got it!”Â

Ivan gave her a nod. “You’re front and center starting now. Your form’s been solid. Lead by example.”Â
He raised his whistle and blew hard again. “Break’s over. Back in formation!”Â
The girls groaned instantly. They hadn’t even rested for two minutes. A few even tried begging him for a little more time.Â
Ivan froze, caught off guard. His face flushed, and that just made them laugh harder.Â
“Knock it off!” he snapped and put on a stern look. “What’s so funny? Get serious! If this keeps up, I’ll switch with Derrick from Unit A and let him run you!”Â
That shut them up fast. Everyone had seen Derrick earlier. He didn’t just yell–he roared. Some of the Unit A girls had cried by the end of warm–ups.Â
“Also,” Ivan said, “I picked Ava to lead the squad. She’s been focused and disciplined since we started. If any of you have a problem, say it now. We can vote or run a challenge. Completely fair.”Â
Before he could finish, the girls all shouted, “We agree, Instructor Cavalli! No objections!”Â
Captain? Nope. Nobody wanted that mess.Â
“Straighten up! At ease!” Ivan said. Then he turned to Ava. “Watch how I do things. From here on out, you’re in charge.”Â
By the time lunch rolled around, the morning drills had finally ended. For most of these girls, who had never done anything this intense in their lives, that lunch bell felt like a blessing fromÂ
above.Â
After sweating through those hours together, they’d started to bond. As for Ava, she’d earned her place. She stayed cool, stayed kind, and never acted like she was better than them. Her form really was perfect–just like Ivan had said.Â
A few girls even asked her to sit with them for lunch. They thought highly of her.Â
But Noelle grabbed her first. “I knew you before they did. I call dibs!”Â
“Don’t forget me!” Zoey lunged in, clearly worried someone else would steal Ava away.Â
Ava looked at both of them and rolled her eyes with a smile. “You two sound like a bunch of drama queens.”Â

That cracked them up. Each girl clung to one of her arms. Zoey even leaned her head on Ava’s shoulder. “Told you she gets me.”Â
That’s how “drama queen” became their inside joke.Â
After lunch, Ava went back to her dorm to nap. Zoey had invited her to share theirs, but there was only one bed. Shoving two girls on it wouldn’t end well. So Ava passed.Â
