Chapter 23 Ava’s Got Five Problems

Neither Elias nor Lucas had returned for dinner. Ava wouldn’t have found it odd if it weren’t for the fact that Jonathan was also nowhere to be found. 

Asher himself only made it home by the time it was 10 p.m. So, he was surprised to find Ava still up when he got home. 

“You’re still awake? Did you have fun today?” he asked. 

“It was alright,” she said. After a beat, she asked, “Asher, why aren’t Great–uncle Jonathan, Uncle Elias, and Uncle Lucas home?” 

Asher was changing into his indoor slippers as he replied absentmindedly, “Well, they’re busy handling your situation. Those families you’ve gotten yourself entangled with aren’t exactly ordinary families… Grandfather, my father, and Uncle Lucas had to meet them in person.” 

A flicker of shame appeared on Ava’s face. After all, she had banked on the Morren family’s influence to handle things when she decided to pull this stunt. “Asher, is it… is it going to be difficult to settle things?” 

“Well, those men haven’t gotten themselves hitched, and now there’s already talk of a ‘divorce.‘ No sane family would be popping a bottle of champagne over this, is all I’m saying.” 

Ava lowered her head as she whispered guiltily, “I’m sorry… this is all my fault.” 

Asher inwardly cursed himself for being too blunt when he caught sight of her reddened eyes. 

So, he hastily approached her and patted her head. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have worded it that way. Don’t worry. Things are a little complicated right now, but we’ll figure something out.” 

“I was too reckless.” Ava felt extremely guilty. She had always preferred to keep out of everyone’s way. Yet, she was doing the exact opposite by putting the Morren family in a difficult position. 

Perhaps she wasn’t in a good headspace, causing her to become prone to thinking in circles. As a result, she found what others might consider a blessing utterly unbearable. 

Her transmigration was a secret she’d carried for her whole life, Of course, she wanted to be like all those transmigration–genre female leads and live her best life. Unfortunately, she just couldn’t do it. 

Asher gently wiped away her tears. “Don’t cry. Come now, Ava. If certain people stumble upon you crying in front of me, they’ll definitely give me a beating I won’t soon forget!” 

As one of the many men in the Morren family, he was the lowest in the family hierarchy. He

could still remember the many times he had to cover for Jane. Good times, really. Still, he was patient, and Jane finally decided to do the nice thing by getting herself married. 

Alas, a younger sister quickly came along and punted him back down the food chain. 

“Asher, have I messed things up for Great–uncle Jonathan, Uncle Elias, and Uncle Lucas? Why don’t we make it clear in black and white that I’m the one at fault?” 

Asher flicked her forehead lightly. “I swear, you’ve been watching way too much of those brainless telenovelas. You’re a girl. If you don’t like them, just say so. You don’t have to force yourself to tolerate them. 

“Besides, real gentlemen would do the proper thing and move out of your life.” 

Ava couldn’t help but giggle despite the tears rolling down her cheeks. Asher’s words did manage to pull her out of her funk, but it was also undeniably embarrassing. 

“Ava, listen to me. We understand that you’re a sensitive girl with valid concerns. Still, you must understand that you are a Morren the second we brought you home. To us, you’re as precious as Jane. So, please stop looking down on yourself, okay?” Asher said softly. 

He genuinely wished that Ava could shake off her worries and live a happy life. Although they couldn’t change her past, they could ensure that her future was one paved in happiness and warmth. 

He wanted her to be a carefree girl. He wanted to see her laugh when she was happy and speak her mind when she wasn’t. He wanted her to actually live for herself for once, and not endure the hardships life had thrown at her. He wanted her to be just like other girls her age. 

After all, the Morren family was not lacking in men. Hopefully, Ava would come to understand that all five of them were more than willing to have her back. 

“Okay, let’s not dwell on this subject any longer. Off you go to bed. I promise everything will be better in the morning,” he said with a smile. 

Ava finally saw Jonathan when she woke up the next day. Still, she couldn’t help but wonder just what time he came home last night. 

“Good morning, Ava,” Jonathan said as he looked up at her from his newspaper. 

“Good morning, Great–uncle Jonathan.” 

He placed the papers aside and gestured to the table. “Eat up. I have something to tell you after you’ve had your breakfast.” 

Ava followed him into the study after she was done–each step she took felt like an invitation for more ants to crawl up her skin.
