Ava laughed at his exaggerated words. “It’s only been a month, not hundreds of years. If it were really centuries, I might have already checked in at the underworld by now.”
Keith’s eyes held her like a magnet. “They say time drags when you’re apart… A month without you has fe endless. Ava, I can’t stop thinking about you. I’ve missed your voice, your scent… everything about you. D you put a spell on me, making me fall for you…”
His voice, deliberately alluring, brushed against her ear, sending shivers through her.
Ava coughed lightly, feeling her ears flush. “Keith! Be serious. I told you not to flaunt that voice of yours c purpose.”
“Not flaunt it? Then when would I? I thought you liked it. You like my voice, which means you like me. An knowing you like me… it makes me feel so happy.”
Ava hurriedly covered her ears. “Okay, okay, now–just act normal.
Keith chuckled at the sight of her blushing face, then grew serious. “Ava, I need to tell you something.”
“What is it?”
“I accepted a position at Starry Heavens University. I’ll be teaching there–two classes a week, one core course and one elective.”
Ava’s eyes went wide. “You… teaching at Starry Heavens University?”
She couldn’t believe her ears, but Keith had said it himself. There was no reason to doubt him.
“Why?” she asked.
With Keith’s status and reputation, he didn’t need to teach there. He’d never taught at Starry Heavens University before–it had to be a sudden decision.
Ava’s mind immediately jumped to herself. Maybe it was a little vain, but she couldn’t help wondering.
“Is it… because of me?” she asked.
Keith looked at her slowly. “Yes, and no. They’d approached me before, but I wasn’t planning on it. Now… since you’re studying there, I want to see more of you. That’s why I agreed. Ava, for your elective–would you choose my class?”
Ava’s heart raced, her face flushing. “Well… my major is kind of different from what you teach.”
“You studied this track before, didn’t you? Besides, if you/take my class as an elective, you don’t have to worry about failing. I won’t let you fail.”
“What?”
Keith held her gaze. “I said, if you take my class, I won’t let you fail.”
“And… what if I do?” Ava couldn’t help teasing back.

“If you fail…” Keith’s voice turned low and velvet–smooth, dripping with temptation, “then I’ll… make sure you get extra lessons.”
There was a seductive warmth in his tone, luring her into his soft, irresistible
trap.
They stared at each other for a moment, caught in that intimate tension, until a melody from Ava’s Holoband interrupted them. She glanced at it. “Mason’s calling. I should take it.”
“And the elective?” Keith asked.
“If I can choose you, I will. Okay?”
Keith smiled. “Alright, I’ll be waiting.”
After ending the call with Keith, Ava returned Mason’s video call.
“Who were you talking to?” Mason asked.
“Keith. He told me he’s joining Starry Heavens University to teach.”
Mason raised an eyebrow, his gaze steady on her. “You’re surprised?”
Ava nodded. “A little!”
“He’s not your professor for your major.”
Ava shot him a look, thinking to herself, Yeah, he’s not my major professor, yet I get to take his elective.
But she didn’t say that out loud.
“You at the office?”
Mason shook his head. “No, I’m on a business trip.”
He moved to the floor–to–ceiling window, taking in the night skyline. Neon lights painted the city in vivid colors. Mason adjusted the Holoband’s view. “The magical cyber–city. One day, I’ll bring you here to see it.”
Ava blinked. “Is this that infrastructure–obsessed sci–fi planet? The one that loves abstract and futuristic
stuff?”
Mason laughed softly, listening to her voice. “Looks like you know a bit about it.”
Ava smiled. “Just what I’ve heard.”
Mason switched the view back to her, studying her smiling face. “A month apart… did you miss me?”
Ava froze at the question, blinking at him dumbfounded.
“That look–does it mean you did, or you didn’t?”
Ava found the question impossible to answer.
“Well… Um…”
