“With Laurent by your side, I guess you didn’t have time to think about anyone else,” Mason said wi faint, teasing smile.Â
Ava decided it was safer to stay quiet. Some things were better left unsaid.Â
She didn’t need to answer anyway. Mason rubbed his forehead, a hint of weariness in his eyes. “Ava… wanted to see you sooner. I’ve missed you.”Â
Ava studied his expression carefully. “Have you been working too hard lately?”Â
He looked at her, eyebrows slightly furrowed. “Why do you ask?”Â
“You look tired,” she said plainly.Â
“Worked late last night, didn’t get much rest,” Mason admitted. He settled onto the couch. “It’s getting You should get some sleep. I have a video meeting soon.”Â
Ava nodded quickly, ready to end the call, but something made her pause. She leaned forward slightly “Promise me you’ll sleep after work’s done.”Â
“Alright, I’ll listen to you,” he said, a soft smile tugging at his lips.Â
The next morning, Ava arrived at the classroom early. Only a few students were scattered around.Â
As soon as she walked in, every boy turned to look at her, disbelief written all over their faces.Â
The Agriculture Department didn’t exactly attract a lot of female students. This year they’d taken in thre girls, but no one expected much–plant science was known for dusty lab work and long days, hardly glamorous. The guys in the animal science and livestock track weren’t exactly catching anyone’s eye eitheÂ
Yet here she was—Ava.Â
Her name alone was already familiar among the new students. And in person, she was even more striking than the candid photo floating around the forum.Â
Today, she wore a soft gray knit sweater with slightly flared black pants and carried a simple canvas bag ove her shoulder.Â
Soon, the rest of the class trickled in.Â
By 9:10 a.m., their homeroom teacher finally arrived.Â
Sophia Whitman was tall, fiery, and commanding, with a shock of red hair that seemed to announce her presence as she strode into the room.Â
She climbed to the front of the classroom and immediately spotted the lone girl in the first row.Â
After a brief self–introduction and laying out her expectations, she asked the students to introduceÂ
themselves.Â

There were over sixty students in the class, with only one girl–though compared to previous years, three had applied this year, which was something.Â
When the introductions were over, Sophia turned to the class. “Since we only have one female student, and considering Ava’s outstanding performance during military training–she even became the model cadet–I propose that Ava serve as our class president. How does everyone feel about that?”Â
Class president? Me?Â
Ava opened her mouth to respond, but before she could say anything, the boys began speaking up.Â
“Ms. Whitman, I agree! Ava deserves it.”Â
“We all agree. Ava should be class president…”Â
Ava froze.Â
Sophia raised a hand to quiet them. “Then, it’s settled. Ava, you will be our class president. Now, anyone interested in running for vice president or other positions, step forward.”Â
Within moments, a dozen boys rushed to the front to volunteer for vice president. Other positions drew only a few candidates.Â
Ava felt a strange mix of shock and dread.Â
After a vote, Gabriel Marlowe won the vice president position. The rest of the morning was spent organizing minor tasks and moving the new semester’s textbooks.Â
Ava’s Holoband pinged–Zoey and the others had already arranged to meet her for lunch. She grabbed her bag, ready to leave.Â
Gabriel approached her. “Ava, could we have lunch together? I’d like to discuss some class matters with you.”Â
She looked up at him. Gabriel had reddish–brown hair, a youthful, boyish look, and when he smiled, his eyes sparkled. He seemed cheerful and approachable.Â
“Sorry, I already have plans with friends today. If there’s anything, you can message me in the class group,” Ava said politely, nodding slightly before walking past him.Â
Gabriel didn’t take offense. “Alright, Ava,” he said calmly.Â
Another boy, recently elected athletics representative, clapped Gabriel on the shoulder like old friends. “Wow, just the first week of school, and you’re already asking the class president to lunch. Why not invite the rest of us too?”Â
Gabriel shrugged off the hand. “We’re all in the same class. There’s plenty of time to get to know everyone— no need to rush.”Â
“Double standards, Gabriel! You’re desperate to see Ava, but for the rest of us… it can wait.”Â
Ava reached the classroom doorway where Zoey was talking with a few boys from her class. Seeing Ava,Â
