Liam was a refined–looking man, and he had come alone. He hadn’t brought his wife, Lyara Mercer, along for this. After all, this was about his eldest son, Laurent Caswell, who wasn’t Lyara’s biological child.Â
It wouldn’t have been appropriate for her to be here.Â
Meanwhile, Ava wanted the earliest possible ticket to the most inhospitable planet she could find. She knew that people tend to go, “Oh, what a small world!” However, that didn’t mean that she actually wanted her world to be minuscule.Â
Why, oh, why did Lianne’s older brother, Laurent Caswell, turn out to be another one of her assigned matches?Â
According to the file that had been unceremoniously handed to her, Laurent was six feet six inches, which makes him the tallest among her five matches.Â
Honestly, all of her matches were giants. Ethan, the elder Brock brother, was six feet four inches, and Ryan shared the same height as Mason, which was six feet five inches. Keith was also six feet four inches.Â
Ava worried her lower lip as she tried to shove the scream down her throat. This was getting ridiculous. Did she jinx it by thinking about transmigration female leads?Â
If she did, she wanted to take it all back!Â
So, if Fate could just press rewind and stop messing with me, that’d be wonderful.Â
“Ms. Morren, shall we?” Laurent spoke, ending their awkward silence.Â
Ava nodded and followed him to the terrace on the second floor.Â
…Â
The terrace only had some simple furnishings with two wicker chairs and a small round table where cups and a teapot sat.Â
The Caswell Residence had far less bustle compared to the Brock Residence, making the entire place seem oddly bereft.Â
Laurent took the initiative and poured her a cup of tea. “I apologize if things here seem a bit… eerie, Ms. Morren. I’m afraid I don’t come home often, and my father doesn’t live here.”Â
Ava cradled the cup and took a small sip. The rich aroma of the drink spread across her tongue, soothing her nerves. It was a rather delicious blend. Are those flowers I’m tasting?Â

“Mr. Caswell, I didn’t expect to see you.”Â
“My parents are divorced. You know this, yes?”Â
Ava nodded. “I’ve heard about it through the grapevine.”Â
“You’re fine with it?”Â
“Why wouldn’t I be? Kids are innocent when it comes to the conflict between adults, aren’t they?” Ava had heard that his parents had gotten divorced when he was a child.Â
However, the reason for that divorce had been rather scandalous and wasn’t exactly a topic one could cover over tea.Â
After all, Laurent’s mother had been found having an affair with a 19–year–old boy. His father, Liam Caswell, had wasted no time filing for a divorce and taking Laurent with him.Â
He had been a single father until he remarried when Laurent turned 16.Â
His cheek relaxed slightly upon hearing her answer. Then, he asked, “Ms. Morren, you went to visit the Brocks this morning, didn’t you?”Â
Ava would rather answer anything but that. Still, her courtesy prevented her from quibbling. So, she replied honestly, “Yes.”Â
Nevertheless, she hastily downed the rest of her drink and changed the subject, saying, “Gosh, I’m so parched. Would you mind pouring me another cup?” Do it so I can distract you from asking me questions that I don’t want to answer!Â
He obliged, pouring the pale golden liquid into her cup. When he did, she found her eyes inadvertently straying toward his hands.Â
He had large hands with long fingers and warm, tan skin. His joints were well–defined, and his veins stood out when he shifted. His hands were beautiful.Â
Ava’s lashes fluttered as she hastily looked away. Honestly, she had a thing for hands and Adam’s apples. Although a good–looking face could attract honey, she was more interested in those two features in a man.Â
That being said, this was something she would never admit, even in the threat of death. She was going to take that secret to her grave even if it killed her!Â
Laurent refilled her cup. “Do you like coffee, Ms. Morren?”Â
“Not particularly. I drink it when it’s available, but not often. I might end up staring at the ceiling for the whole night if I have too much of it.”Â

Her answer amused him, making him chuckle. He was dressed casually today, his uniform nowhere in sight. So, he looked completely different from what she was used to.Â
Still, he looked amazing in both, especially in uniform.Â
“Ms. Morren, you aren’t just here for coffee, are you?” he finally inquired as he looked straight an her.Â
“Well..” Ava started, not knowing how to broach the subject. Still she bit the bullet and continued, “Great–uncle Jonathan has probably outlined everything there is to say?Â
“So, you’re here to end this arrangement? Laurent leaned forward, suddenly closing the distance between them.Â
Ava’s breath caught as she instinctively leaned away.Â
Their close proximity gave her a full view of his shorn hair and his narrow eyes. They were a striking shade of green flecked with bits of brown. They were like calm lakes on a sunny day.Â
She could see his straight nose cutting down his face and his well–defined lips. They were slightly upturned into a natural smirk.Â
Only one word came to mind now that she’d gotten such a close look at his features— unforgettable.Â
He exhaled, his breath brushing against her skin as his Adam’s apple shifted slightly.Â
Ava immediately looked anywhere else but at him. She was not going to get herself caught red- handed for staring. “You know why I’m here. So, what do you think, Mr. Caswell?” she asked as she tried to distract herself with the mountain view.Â
“Does it matter?” Laurent said, leaning in closer.Â
She felt her muscles lock up as he came closer. He was invading her personal bubble, and she was not happy, so she inhaled deeply before replying calmly. “Of course. I respect you, Mr. Caswell.”Â
“Then… what if I say no?” he asked, his eyes never once leaving her face. “What would your answer be then, Ava?”Â
“Mr. Caswell, we’re not a good match.”Â
“And why’s that?” he pressed.Â
Ava gripped the armrests tightly and lowered her eyes. “We just aren’t. You could easily findÂ
someone better.”Â

“You aren’t me, so how would you know that? How would you know who would suit me best?” he countered, his tone taking on a hard edge.Â
