43 Trying to Walk AwayÂ
After saying that, Ava didn’t wait for Mason to respond.Â
She walked over and sat down on the sofa.Â
She had been putting on an act for two days, and she was worn out.Â
Mason lived alone and didn’t stay with his family, so there were no elders or relatives around.Â
Ava was glad she could finally relax a little.Â
“Are you reminding me that you are a Morren and that I should watch my behavior?” he said.Â
“That isn’t what I mean. I’m just being honest,” Ava explained as she rubbed her eyes. “I’m not really a Morren.”Â
“Mr. Heiser,” she continued, “please don’t assume I actually am one of them just because I share their lastÂ
name.”Â
Mason gave a quiet laugh and lifted his eyes. His sharp brow bones carried a hint of coldness.Â
“Ms. Morren, don’t belittle yourself like that. I know your background. Since the Morren family brought you back, they clearly didn’t care about where you came from…” He paused before asking, “Or are you saying all this because you want me to cancel this marriage?”Â
Ava’s eyes widened. They lit up at once, and she could not hide the excitement in them.Â
“So what do you think, Mr. Heiser?” she asked. “You’re someone as handsome and capable. As a rising star in business who built everything on his own, you must be the dream guy for a lot of women.Â
“Someone like me has a messy background. I came from nothing. I have no special skills, and I’m not an Awakened. I’m really not a good match for you.”Â
“Handsome and capable,” Mason replied with a faint smile. “I’ll take that as a compliment. As for being a dream guy, are you saying I’m also yours?”Â
Ava almost choked. She shook her head fast.Â
“That isn’t what I mean. What I’m trying to say that you must have plenty of people chasing after you, but not me.”Â
He was not the kind of man she dared to get close to. Just looking at him made her want to stay far away.Â
She was not asking for trouble.Â
“Ms. Morren,” Mason commented as he straightened and looked her in the eye. “Are you trying to make me sever ties with you?”Â
Ava froze.Â
His eyes were unsettling. They were long and narrow, and his brows sat low with little space between them.Â

It gave him an intense look.Â
His eyes were beautiful, yet on him, they felt cold and distancÂ
She didn’t know why, but her instincts told her that standing in front of him felt more stressful than facing anyone else.Â
Laurent had leaned close and threatened her yesterday, but she hadn’t truly felt afraid. Maybe it was because of his job. She always had a soft spot for soldiers and felt he would never really send her to a military court.Â
Mason felt different.Â
Everything about him felt wrong.Â
Jane and the others said he was cold and expressionless, but Ava disagreed. Her instincts told her thatÂ
She frowned before she opined, “I thought someone as successful as you wouldn’t be short on girlfriends.”Â
Mason didn’t miss a single change in her expression. “It sounds like you’re not very happy with me,” he said. “Tell me what you dislike about me.”Â
Ava waved her hands right away.Â
“No, that isn’t it. I don’t dislike you, Mr. Heiser. I just think we’re from two different worlds. We’re not suited to be together.”Â
“We’ve only met twice, and you’ve already written me off,” Mason commented as he rubbed his brow. “You barely know me, yet you already seem to have a strong bias. You should remember that you were the one who forced the match with me.”Â
When he brought up the forced match, Ava felt uncomfortable all over. She had no confidence at all.Â
“I’m very sorry, Mr. Heiser,” she apologized as she stood up and bowed deeply. Her attitude was as sincere as it could be. “I apologize for forcing the match on you.Â
“To show my sincerity, we can sign an agreement. You can also ask for compensation. I’ll pay you back slowly in the future.”Â
Mason laughed without holding back.Â
“Ms. Morren, you really will try anything,” he said. “I’ve honestly never met a woman like you.”Â
Ava could not understand what was so funny. She had no idea why he was laughing so hard.Â
Mason ran his fingers through his hair and took a slow breath.Â
“So, tell me, Ms. Morren,” he said. “If I end our relationship, what do I get out of it?”Â
Ava sat back down when she saw he was willing to talk.Â
“That depends on what you want, Mr. Heiser,” she said. “We can talk it through.”Â

Mason looked at the woman sitting straight across from him. She looked much more relaxed now.Â
He could not help but smile and suddenly felt like teasing her.Â
“Based on what you said earlier, you aren’t the Morren family’s biological daughter,” he said as he shook his head. “If you rely only on yourself, I honestly don’t see what you can offer theÂ
He looked at her calmly.Â
“Ms. Morren, I’m a businessman. I don’t do unprofitable deals.”Â
