Ava spoke with barely any energy left. “Enough. Just stop talking. The more you say, the more disillusioned I get. I really was that naive back then. I honestly thought as long as I studied hard, everything would work out. I never realized people at the bottom could grind away for half their lives and still get nowhere. It is all just wasted struggle. Class mobility is frozen solid. The door was slammed shut on ordinary people a long time ago.”
“Don’t be so pessimistic,” he said. “You spent only thirteen years climbing your way into a top–tier university and getting a higher education. That is already incredible. All of us genuinely admire you.”
Ava and Asher chatted on and off, their conversation drifting without much focus. Meanwhile, Skyler was being pressured into moving closer to them.
Ava let out a soft, confused look. “Huh?” Then she slowly looked around, her eyes scanning the area as she tried to spot the girl Skyler was into.
There are only seven or eight girls around anyway, and who knows which unlucky one it is.
Ava couldn’t read a thing just by looking at the girls‘ expressions. She glanced left and right, and her just here for the show‘ look was painfully obvious.
So when Skyler ended up standing in her direction, peering at her over the fence, Ava completely froze.
What the heck is going on? I don’t even know him!
Asher clearly hadn’t seen this coming. His expression fell instantly. “Don’t tell me… the person you like is her?”
Skyler bowed deeply. “Hi. I’m really sorry for meeting you under these circumstances. I’m Skyler. Before the competition, I saw you with Asher. The moment I saw you, I was completely smitten. I meant to keep these feelings to myself and never say a word. I’m sorry
Ava was totally dumbstruck. “I don’t even know you. Are you serious? Your feelings have nothing to do with me. I don’t need them.”
I’m just here chilling, watching the drama unfold, so how did end up dragging me into it?
Asher’s expression darkened. He glared at Skyler and said, “I gotta hand it to you, you’ve got some guts. I underestimated you. But you really think you can just slip away like that? Think again. The mess you stirred. up? You’re gonna deal with it yourself.” He grabbed Ava’s hand and added, “Let’s go.”
Ava just wanted to get out of this mess as fast as possible
This is wild. I’m being drawn into something I have no involvement with.
“Stop right there!” Jolene shouted from behind.
Ava didn’t even glance back. Jolene pressed on. “What, are you just gonna ignore the rules and walk away?”
Asher whipped his head around, eyes flashing with menace. “Hey, I think you’ve got the wrong people!”
Jolene sized up the man and woman in front of her.
The man can’t gauge much for now, but this woman gives off zero sign of any Awakened connection or rank. Either her power rank is off the charts, or she’s just a regular person. Clearly, the most likely scenario is that she’s just an ordinary

human.
“Sir, are you her suitor or her husband?” Jolene asked, her tone sharp.

“D*mn it, you’re everywhere.” Asher scowled, his mood sour. “If you’re into a guy, go chase a guy. Don’t drag innocent people into your mess!”
“If you’re not her suitor, step aside. Otherwise, do you really want a stint in jail?” Jolene didn’t even blink at him. As a high–ranking Awakened, men were nothing more than toys for her amusement.
“What do you want?” Asher snapped, fury boiling inside him.
Ava gripped Asher’s arm tightly, terrified he might snap and do something he couldn’t take back. She couldn’t stand Jolene either, but if Asher lost it and struck her in public, the consequences would be severe. Ava wasn’t about to let Asher ruin his future over some worthless
person.
“Don’t act rashly,” Ava said to Asher, then turned to Jolene. “He’s my brother. I’m his sister. Ms. Palmer, whether you succeeded in proposing is your business, not mine. I’m just watching. Before this, I didn’t even know him. And now you’re pushing Mr. Steele around and pointing your anger at me. What kind of logic is that? As an Awakened, are you really planning to go after an innocent, ordinary person? Alliance law prohibits Awakened from harming regular persons. You’re not planning to flaunt the law in public, are you?”
Jolene watched Ava, noticing how calm and composed she was, not a hint of panic in her voice. She tilted her head and studied for a moment. “I still don’t get it. You’re just a regular person, right? He meets you once, and somehow you end up outshining me.”
Ava’s expression was full of question marks.
What kind of bizarre comment is that?
“Ms. Palmer, I’m just a regular person. How are we even comparable? Some people like coffee, some people like tea. You really think you can treat us the same? You’re you, I’m me. And now you’re blaming me over some made–up preference? Isn’t that going way too far?
Asher cut in. “Ava, why are you even talking to her? If she’s mentally unstable, let her see a doctor. Let’s go.”
“Did I say you could leave? Are you really that clueless?” olene felt like Ava was crushing her pride beneath them.
