Chapter 66 The Power Behind Jolene

“He’s younger than you. Don’t lower yourself to his level Ava said. She shot Ryan a sharp, cutting glance. “I’m close with my brother–do you have a problem with that?”
Ryan pressed his tongue against the roof of his mouth, forcing himself to hold back, and thought, I am seconds away from beating this man senseless. Shameless doesn’t even begin to describe him–stirring up conflict and then pretending to be innocent, all while acting like the victim
Several cold, unfriendly gazes turned toward Asher. His scalp prickled. He suddenly remembered the time he’d been pinned down and beaten by Jane’s men. He straightened instantly, he cleared his throat, and insisted, “Ava, you’ll be safer over there with them. I’ll go check whether your sister’s arrived yet.”
Before she could respond, he took off, disappearing in just a few strides.
She was speechless for a moment.
She thought, Since when did Jane say she is coming? Why haven’t I heard anything about it?
“You’re standing so far away–what, do you think we’re going to eat you?” Laurent asked, clearly irritated by the distance she kept. As he spoke, he stepped toward her.
She immediately panicked. “Stop! Don’t come any closer!”
His expression darkened. “Say that again.”
She hurriedly waved her hands. “No, no, that’s not what meant. I’ll come to you–I’m coming now. Just don’t move. If you walk over, it’s too much pressure for me.”
The distance between them wasn’t even that far, yet she somehow spent a full five minutes and still hadn’t
closed it.
“Are you a turtle or something? Why are you moving so slowly?” Mason snapped, losing his patience. “Keep dragging your feet, and I’ll carry you over myself.”
“I am coming, really! My calf was….cramped earlier. It’s better now.” Ava looked at him with the solemn resolve of someone heading toward execution, as if he were a dangerous beast.
“Ava, keeping us at such a distance really hurts,” Ethan declared with a gentle smile. “If you treat us like this, what are we supposed to do?”
“Hmph. I think she’s just heartless–trampling all over other people’s sincerity,” Mason replied.
“That’s a bit too harsh,” Keith said lightly, smiling from start to finish. “She’s only just turned eighteen. She’s still basically a kid. And honestly, we’re not that familiar yet. Of course, she’d be cautious–that’s perfectly normal. Once we spend more time together, she won’t be so distant anymore. Right, Ava?”
To Keith, even Ava’s wariness felt like modesty.
“They’re here,” Laurent insisted, glancing toward the distance. “And they got here fast.”
Ava followed his gaze but saw nothing. She lowered her voice and inquired, “Who’s here?”
“The woman’s husband,” Ryan replied with a sigh at her clueless expression. “Didn’t she just issue you a challenge? As her man, how could he not rush over immediately? Why do you know nothing about it? She’s an Awakened–she’s staked her pride and honor on this Naturally, her husband has to fight on her behalf.”

She blinked. “What? It was just an argument. How did that turn into pride and honor? I already said I refuse her challenge.”
“She’s an Awakened. When she issues a challenge, your refusal doesn’t matter. That woman may be stupid and empty–headed, but she bullied you right in front of us. If we don’t teach her a lesson, wouldn’t that be a slap in our faces?”
He cast a cold glance at the woman. “Honestly, who has such terrible taste to marry someone like that?”
Two or three minutes later, six men entered the inner venue together.
She looked at them, then at Jolene, utterly confused. How can she ignore the men she already has at home and still seek excitement outside? Her husbands aren’t bad–looking at all–at the very least, they have far more presence than that guy named Skyler.
The moment Jolene spotted her men arriving, she hurried over and clutched the arm of the man at the front–Beckett Reid. Her eyes filled with tears as she cried, “Beckett, she bullied me.”
He came from a more prestigious background among her six husbands. Jolene knew she had provoked the wrong people this time and was terrified of being dragged into something beyond her control. All she could do now was hope that he, for the sake of their decades–long marriage, would step in and resolve the matter.
He hailed from the Reid Family, a household with considerable influence even on the Capitol Planet. While he couldn’t compare to those almost inhuman prodigies, he was still widely regarded as a promising young
talent.
He and Jolene had known each other since their youth, sharing a bond deeper than most. Even though she was unfaithful, she did harbor more genuine feelings for Beckett than for her other husbands.
Beckett looked at the woman before him.
Jolene was crying pitifully, tears falling like rain–washed petals, yet all he felt was annoyance. Not a trace of sympathy remained. She had caused a major incident chasing after a race car driver, offended people she never should have crossed, and only came seeking him out when she ran into trouble.
He didn’t answer her.
Instead, he calmly pulled his arm free and walked past her without sparing a single glance.
“I’m very sorry,” he apologized as he approached Ava. “Are you injured?”
“Since you’re here,” Ava replied evenly, gesturing toward Jolene, ‘please keep your wife under control. She attacked first–I merely defended myself.”
Beckett gave a brief nod. “I sincerely apologize for the unpleasant experience you’ve endured. I will cover all medical expenses and provide appropriate compensation.”
