The City Held Its Silence byIrel Knx 109

“It’s not funny Lawrence I literally was kicked out of his estate for his mistress I couldn’t turn to you or father for help, I had to look elsewhere,” I told him.Â
“Jasmine it’s nothing personal, it’s just business. Chairman Acland is a very important person, our family and company can’t be seen associating with you if you’re on his bad side.”Â
Of course, everything always comes back to business doesn’t it? I thought inÂ
annoyance.Â
“I’m your family,” I pointed out to him.Â
“You know that doesn’t matter to Father, Jasmine. But anyway, it worked for you in the end didn’t it?” He asked me. “Good for you.”Â
He was making it seem like I was using Louis, like I was some sugar baby. “It’s not like that betwee—”Â
“It doesn’t matter what your reasons are Jasmine. I suggest you take this opportunity and look after yourself and your child.” he interrupted me.Â
He then gave a hand signal to his assistant and the assistant stepped forward handing him a folder.Â
“Here,” he said as he handed me the folder. “These are our mother’s medical records as you requested.”Â
I looked down at the document. I didn’t expect him to do it himself.Â
He then turned from me and began to walk away. “I don’t want us to be enemies Jasmine. I just want you to understand how business works. Since you reached out to me first I thought I would come and tell you this.”Â
“You don’t want us to be enemies now because what you think I’m with the Carringtons?” I asked him.Â
He didn’t answer immediately as he walked away. “Take care of yourself, Jasmine,” he said ignoring my question. “And by the way, father doesn’t know I came to see you.”Â
With my eyes narrowed I watched him leave.Â
On the ride back to Louis‘ apartment I went through the document. My jaw dropped toÂ

the floor as I found out the cause of my mother’s death.Â
Firstly I could say that the cause of my mother’s death was not related to mine. The doctors actually knew what was wrong with her.Â
The cause of death was inflammation of the brain. What caused the inflammation? The autopsy report said consistent trauma to the head.Â
The consistent trauma my mother received that I could think of was from my father’s hands…Â
All the abuse must have gotten to her. As her body weakened and her injuries worsened.Â
So this is why Father never wanted us to ask questions after my mother died. That’s why he wanted us to quickly forget her and move on.Â

“Nice! One more left hook,” Louis told Tony. Tony swung at the boxing punching pads Louis wore on his hands.Â
I sat by the benches watching them. When I arrived at the apartment the two of them had already had lunch and were preparing for boxing. I too was supposed to have lunch but I wasn’t feeling hungry after reading my mother’s autopsy report. I decided to just watch the two box.Â
“Alright, let’s take a short break. Go drink some water, have a snack and we can start the next round after.Â
“Just one more,” Tony pleaded.Â
“You need energy to fight Tony, remember treating your body right will only make you a better boxer,” Louis reasoned with him.Â
“Okay,” he then agreed excitedly and left the gym to get a snack and water. Tony was really enjoying boxing I thought to myself.Â
Louis then turned to me. “Come on, it’s your turn now,” Louis saidÂ
“Me?” I asked him surprised.Â
“You promised yesterday, come on,” he said to me.Â
I sighed remembering my promise and went up into the ring with him.Â

“I’ll keep it simple and easy,” he told me. He then gave me basic instructions on what I should do. I followed them and began to punch the punching pads.Â
“ThereÂ
you go,” he praised me. “By the way, I forgot to ask, how did it go with your brother, today?” He asked me.Â
“So annoying really,” I told him and punched the punching as hard as I could. “I mean he gave me my mother’s documents but still.”Â
“Tell me,” he encouraged me.Â
“Basically he found out about my working for you but he assumed we’re in a relationship as the rumors are saying.Â
“Start with your left leg in front and then swing. It’ll give you better balance and a more powerful swing,” he advised me.Â
“Okay,” I listened and did as he instructed, and swung again.Â
“Nice,” he complimented me.Â
“I don’t know if he was trying to make amends or what. He was explaining how, he and my father couldn’t help me after Keith abandoned me because they didn’t want upset Keith and how it’s nothing personal-”Â
“-personal, It’s just business isn’t it?” Louis finished off my sentence.Â
I stopped punching and looked up at him, surprised. The look in his golden eyes was one recognition and understanding.Â
“Yeah, I breathed out. “You seem familiar with this topic.”Â
“Well, I do happen to have an older sibling just like yours who is an heir,” he said.Â
I chuckled at that but really it was sad. I knew Louis and I were similar in that we weren’t too close to our families. From the time we spent growing up he was treated with little regard since he wasn’t the heir to his company. If anyone could understand how I felt it was him.Â
“For some reason there’s this idea that having a successful business necessarily requires being a shitty person and screwing over others to get where you need to be,” I said as I continued swinging. From the moment I was born my father had already decided that I was to be used for profit when I came of age. With no regard for my needs, feelings or wants.Â
