But clearly, he had overestimated the mutant cheetah’s kindness and underestimated what Chloe was really capable of. 

Chloe forced herself to eat two compressed biscuits, almost gagging as her eyes rolled back from how dry and hard they 

were. 

“This stuff is nasty,” she grumbled, spitting out the crumbs. 

She had to wash it down with several gulps of water before she finally felt normal again. 

After that, she dumped out all the cores from her backpack and started drawing out their energy. 

Then she just chucked the rest into her spiritual space. 

Just the thought of how many cores it would take to upgrade her spiritual space made Chloe want to bang her head against the wall. 

Suddenly, she heard the sounds of fighting outside. Her eyes gleamed with inspiration, and she slapped her forehead hard. 

Chloe thought, ‘Why didn’t I think of that? 

‘There’s a big guy out there. No reason not to put him to good use.’ 

She turned to Noah, who was still knocked out, and a mischievous, scheming grin crept across her face. 

She ran her hands over him, draining some of the energy she had given him. 

Noah was supposed to wake up in half an hour, but Chloe just knocked him out again, no mercy. 

Chloe thought, ‘Oh, right, better hook him up to some saline to keep his energy up! 

Once she was done, she finally noticed a dozen soldiers staring at her, all looking totally baffled. 

“Quit staring and eat up. You guys need to get your strength back A whole horde of zombies is coming soon,” Chloe said. 

“How do you know zombies are coming?” the youngest soldier asked, looking confused. 

Chloe put on her most mysterious face, shoved Noah over on the bed, and plopped herself down right next to him. 

“Just a little fortune–telling. Tonight’s gonna be a real bloodbath, she said. 

All of the soldiers traded glances, thinking, ‘She might have healing powers, but this girl is seriously odd: totally unpredictable and not normal at all. 

By noon, the battle outside finally settled down, and a wave of panting and excited voices burst into the room. 

“Chloe, I leveled up. I’m already at the peak of Level 2. Just one more breakthrough and I’ll hit Level 3 for sure!” Frank yelled, pumping his fist in the air. 

Even though he was totally wiped out from the fight, he was grinning from ear to ear. 

Mindy’s fire power was stronger, too. She used to be able to mak only a tiny flame, but now she could actually throw fireballs. 

Even Emily and Molly had powered up as well.

Molly strutted in with Joan and Liana, her face full of secrets and a sly grin plastered on her lips.

“Chloe, take a wild guess: what kind of powers do my mom and iana have now?” Molly asked, practically bursting with 

excitement. 

She couldn’t hold it in any longer and blurted it out before Chlo could even respond. 

“Liana awakened a plant–powered ability! She can make dead wood bloom again and get seeds to sprout super fast,” Molly announced, bouncing on her toes. 

Liana was all smiles, amazed that she’d actually awakened an ability at her age. 

Chloe was honestly shocked. Plant–powered abilities were a real ame–changer. If one got them, one basically never had to worry about starving in the apocalypse. 

Even in the dead of winter, one could mass–produce plants, making seeds sprout and grow to maturity in no time. 

Liana proudly held out a head of lettuce as if it were her most precious treasure. She said, “Chloe, this is some lettuce I grew myself. I ripened it in no time!” 

Chloe plucked a leaf and popped it into her mouth, chewing with a satisfying crunch. 

She said, “It tastes amazing: way fresher and sweeter than anything you’d get from a regular garden. And I bet it’s even more nutritious. 

“Liana, you’re awesome! From now on, our team will never run out of fresh veggies.” 

Liana was so happy she couldn’t stop grinning and waving her arms around. 

She looked like she’d turned back the clock by ten years. 

She finally felt like she mattered. 

Ever since she joined the team, Liana had been nervous, constantly afraid she’d be told to leave any day. 

After all, she was just a burden. She was an ordinary old lady who could do nothing but look after the kids and tag along to the doctor. 

But now, things had changed. She could finally call herself part of the team. 

“Chloe, my power might not be for fighting, but I promise I’ll work hard to keep you guys stocked up with backup and supplies. When you’re out there battling, you won’t have anything holding you back,” Liana said, her voice steady and full of warmth. 

Her words got everyone pumped up, filling the room with excitement and hope. 

Even the dozen soldiers nearby were watching Liana with respect and admiration. 

Peyton thought, ‘Man, I wish we could just steal her away for ourselves. 

‘Wait a second. 

“That girl who seems a bit nuts is actually the leader? Are her teammates all out of their minds, too? 

After a quick mental check, he figured it had to be because Chlos got that healing ability and the whole team was counting on her to keep them alive. 

Peyton thought, ‘Guess that’s why she’s in charge.

‘Or maybe she’s just got brains?‘ 

Before he could make sense of it all. Molly pointed straight at Jon and urged, “Mom, tell them yourself!” 

Everyone’s eyes landed on Joan, who was grinning from ear to er. Joan said, “I think I’ve got a lightning ability.” 

Chloe almost did a spit–take. 

Everyone else was just as shocked, their jaws practically hitting the floor. 

“Lightning ability?” Frank blurted out, eyes wide. 

None of them had ever heard of that kind of power before, but just the name alone sounded crazy powerful. 

“Lightning ability?” Chloe repeated, her mind totally blown. 

That was one of those rare, overpowered abilities. It was easily in the top three among all elemental powers. 

Chloe was totally floored.

Joan nodded, then raised her right index finger to the sky. Wisps of purple lightning curled around her fingertip. 

“I just awakened this power, so for now I can only release a bit of lightning,” Joan said, her voice bubbling with excitement. 

Just that little spark of lightning was enough to make Chloe totally jealous. She wanted that power so bad. 

“This is amazing. Our base just got two new powerhouses. Everyone, take a good break at noon and get ready to go all out this afternoon,” Chloe announced, her excitement obvious. 

Everyone got the message loud and clear. 

Chloe reached into her spiritual space and pulled out a massive pot, setting it up right in the RV. 

“We’re having seafood boil for lunch today!” she announced, grinning from ear to ear. 

The rest of the crew dove into the RV’s kitchen, grabbing all sorts of fixings. 

There was a spicy seafood boil, loaded with jumbo shrimp, crab legs, lobster tails, crawfish, red potatoes, corn on the cob, and ouille sausage, all drenched in Cajun spices. 

They shoved two tables together: enough for a dozen people to crowd around and feast together. 

The cheetah wandered over, eyes glued to the pot, drooling all over itself as it stared hungrily. 

The cheetah thought, ‘Man, I want some so bad. That wicked woman better give me some, right?‘ 

Chloe pulled out a whole roasted chicken, tore off a drumstick, and waved it temptingly at the mutant cheetah. 

“You want some?” she teased, grinning. 

The mutant cheetah turned around with a haughty flick, showin her nothing but its backside. 

“Suit yourself. I’ll just feed it to the dogs,” Chloe said with a shrug 

Just then, a chorus of stomach growls erupted from the side. Che glanced over to see a dozen soldiers staring straight ahead, pretending not to notice. 

But their stomachs kept rumbling, and now and then, one could hear someone swallowing hard.

Peyton kicked him in the leg and hissed under his breath, “You’re a soldier!” 

The kid blinked, all puppy–eyed. He asked, “Miss, got room for a soldier in your house?”
