Everyone’s eyes were burning with gossip–fueled curiosity, leaving Chloe completely speechless. 

With no other option, she just pulled the curtains shut and went to bed. 

But then, Chloe suddenly jolted awake. 

To her surprise, Noah was lying right next to her, giving her those puppy eyes. 

“What the hell do you want?” Chloe snapped, her anger flaring. 

She yanked the blanket off herself and, fuming, kicked Noah off the bed. 

Noah looked all sad and hurt. He said, “I just want to sleep with you.” 

Chloe’s face was flushed, and she could even hear people outside trying to stifle their laughter.

She slapped Noah hard on the forehead and growled, “Scram! If you keep pestering me, I’ll toss you out to the zombies.” 

As soon as she said that, the little cheetah cub shot out from the side, baring its teeth at her. 

“What are you yowling for? Keep it up, and I’ll throw you and your dumb owner out together,” Chloe snapped. 

The little cheetah cub blinked, then tugged Noah away with its teeth, dragging him out of the room as fast as it could. 

The cheetah thought, ‘Seriously, what’s so great about this crazy woman? Why does my owner insist on following her? 

‘If it comes to it, I’ll find him a female cheetah later. She’ll definitely be prettier than her! 

The days flew by. Sticking with the army was definitely the smart move: aside from the occasional trouble stirred refugees, there were hardly any safety issues. 

During this time, the tribe welcomed a bunch of powered humans, giving their overall strength a solid boost. 

They were finally approaching Bluehaven Base 

“What’s going on out there?” Chloe asked. 

and the refugees outside were causing trouble again. 

Frank turned around and replied, “Looks like over a hundred refugees are causing trouble.”

The army had been on the move for a week, and refugee riots happened every single day. But today, things seemed way more intense than usual. 

Chloe poked her head out and said, “Don’t get involved. Just stay alert 

Just then, a woman suddenly fell right in front of the truck, blocking their way. 

Frank frowned and slammed the horn. 

But instead of getting up, the woman just sprawled out on the ground, totally acting like she was trying to pull a stunt. 

Frank yelled out the window, furious. He snapped, “Move it, or I’ll run you over!” 

The woman didn’t react at all. 

Frank got out to move her, but as soon as he stepped out, a dozen thugs grabbed him.

These guys looked even nastier than Frank, faces twisted and mean 

One look and one could tell that they were nothing but trouble. 

“What the hell do you guys want?” Frank demanded. 

The thugs burst out in loud, mocking laughter. 

“What do you think we’re doing? Don’t tell me you still don’t get it?” one of them sneered. 

“Yeah, you ran into my sister. Now you gotta pay up,” another jeered. 

His eyes flicked over to the RV, full of greedy intent. 

“Hand over the RV, or you can forget about leaving,” he threatened. 

Frank crossed his arms, eyeing the group of powerless refugees. He thought, Seriously? These nobodies think they can mug 

me now? 

“So what now? Guess I’ll have to make the army answer for this, Frank said, not backing down. 

His words made the thugs crack up. “You think the army’s gonna help you? Who the hell do you think you are?” one of them mocked. 

“That’s right, the army’s got its own mess to deal with. They don’t give a damn about you,” another jeered. 

Frank raised an eyebrow 

They had just been tagging along behind the troops, never even stepping out. So they had no idea what had happened with the army. 

A burly man gripped a fire axe, its blade stained with blood that had already dried and turned black. 

“Enough talk. Hand over the RV, and we’ll spare your life,” he threatened. 

“No way. If you’ve got the guts, go ahead and kill me,” Frank shot back. 

The guy with the fire axe spat hard on the ground 

You sure talk big, kid Alright, boys, let’s teach him a lesson,” he sneered. 

Before he could even finish, Frank just twisted the guy’s neck with brute force, killing him instantly, He didn’t even bother activating his defensive power. 

He grinned and stepped forward. He challenged, “Pretty tough, huh? Who’s next?” 

The woman who’d been lying on the ground shot up and tried to run for it. 

Frank grabbed her by the hair, dragging her back. 

The woman panicked. She begged, “Please, let me go! It wasn’t my idea, they made me do it? 

Frank demanded. “What’s going on with the army?” 

The woman blinked in surprise. She asked. You really don’t know? 

But to check things out, then pulled out a pack of instant noodles and handed it to the woman she said. “Tell us everything you know”

The woman burst into tears of joy when she got the noodles. 

She said, “These past few days, another faction has emerged within the army: a squad of powered humans. They’ve been trying to wrest control from the military.” 

Chloe and Frank exchanged a look. 

“Who’s leading this squad of powered humans?” Chloe asked. 

The woman thought for a moment and then replied, “I heard it’s a really powerful guy, a level–three powered human. 

“That’s all I know.” 

Chloe nodded, and Frank let the woman go. 

“Chloe, I really think we should stay out of this,” Frank said. 

Chloe nodded and said, “Yeah, once we pick up Linda and her family, we’ll head straight to Grovenwich.” 

Grovenwich was her grandmother’s hometown: a beautiful little city nestled between mountains and rivers. 

The main reason she chose it was that it was up high, so there was no need to worry about floods. 

Plus, there was a newly developed tourist resort there. 

All around were brand–new, fully furnished townhouses, but no one was living in them yet. 

It was the perfect spot to set up a base. 

Before the apocalypse, Chloe had even stocked up a ton of supplies and stashed them in the air–raid shelter over there. 

Just then, Renee and her family rushed over, frantic and disheveled, their clothes torn and scratched. 

Behind them, a mob of desperate, starving refugees was hot on their heels. 

“What the hell happened to you?” Chloe asked, her eyes wide in disbelief. 

Renee sobbed uncontrollably. She cried out, “Chloe, please, you have to help us!” 

Before she could even finish speaking, a swarm of refugees had already surrounded the RV. 

Evan shielded Renee and their kid with his arms. He snapped at the refugees, “You already took our car! What more do you 

want?” 

One of the men licked blood from his teeth, grinning. He said, “Leave the kid behind.” 

“Hell no! That’s my child!” Evan roared, his face twisted with rage. 

Chloe’s eyes narrowed as she finally pieced it all together. With a flick of her wrist, an ice blade shot out, so fast no one saw it coming, and the man was instantly decapitated, his head hitting the ground with a sickening thud. 

Chloe’s voice cut through the chaos like a blade of ice. She snapped, “Who dares take another step?” 

The refugees were starting to get scared, but the moment their eyes landed on that decked–out RV, their fear vanished: greed and guts took over. 

“Don’t be scared! Just like before, let’s mob them and snatch the RV!” one of them yelled. 

With that shout, everyone who’d been ready to bail suddenly got hyped up again.

Chloe stood unfazed, her gaze icy and calm. The instant the refugees lunged forward, a massive ice ball appeared before her. 

The ice ball hurtled into the mob and, to everyone’s shock, crupted with a thunderous boom. 

Screams echoed as the mob was thrown into chaos, bodies sent sprawling and shattered in the aftermath. 

“Chloe, our car’s gone. Is there any way you could help us out?” Rence stammered, her voice thick with embarrassment. 

Chloe asked, “I thought your spiritual space could attack people. How’d you end up in this mess?” 

Renee ducked her head, face burning. She said, “There were just way too many refugees. We were moving slowly today, and when they saw food through the window, they all swarmed us.” 

Her spiritual space only worked on powered humans, but these were just regular refugees: none of them had any powers. 

And Evan by himself? No way he could keep them safe.
