The Day Love Betrayed Me and Never the Plan 119

Chapter 119

Chloe was determined to make the most of this second chance. She was going to go big or go home.

She wasn’t about to let herself suffer for anyone anymore.

Chloe asked, Excuse me, can I trade something else for rations?”

The woman’s enthusiasm cooled a little. She replied, Well, that depends on what you want to swap.”

With the apocalypse in full swing

zombies and mutant creatures were everywhere. The cities had been completely taken over, and humans couldn’t even get inside.

Food was in extremely short supply right now.

Trading anything else for food was nearly impossible.

Daisy burst out laughing.

She sneered, Ha! I thought that bitch was loaded with supplies, but she’s just bluffing.”

She couldn’t help but shout at Chloe, Bitch, quit acting like you’re all that. She’s a woman. Your usual seduction moves won’t work here.”

But then she locked eyes with a pair of icy stares, and her words instantly froze.

Noah gave Daisy a cold, deadeyed stare, as if she were already a corpse.

Chloe cast a subtle glance Daisy’s way, a faint smile playing at her lips.

Daisy, you should mind your own business. Don’t be surprised if you end up in the basement, scrambling with those smelly guys for a place to crash,Chloe said.

She covered her mouth, a wickedly satisfied grin spreading across her face.

Just imagine: when it comes time to fight for a place to sleep, who knows what you’ll have do,Chloe teased.

She left the rest unsaid, but everyone knew exactly what she was getting at.

Chloe took off her hiking backpack and placed it on the registration desk.

She asked, I’ve got cigarettes and some antibiotics. Any chance I could use them as rent?”

The woman shot up from her seat, her face changing colors as excitement took over.

She blurted out, Antibiotics? You really have all these antibiotics?”

She thought, Seriously, who escapes with cigarettes and antibiotics instead of food?”

But honestly, cigarettes and antibiotics were way more valuable than basic supplies.

Cigarettes, for example, were a staple for most guys, and now they were selling for a fortune.

And antibiotics? In a world where catching a fever could be fatal, a single pill could mean the difference between life and

death.

But with everyone struggling just to survive, who would go out of their way to find medicine?

Chapter 119

Even some of the highranking officials in the base had met their end because antibiotics were so scarce.

Chloe knew exactly what the staff member was thinking, and she curved her lips in a knowing smile.

So, can I trade these for rations?she asked.

Of course! That’s more than enough, the staff member blurted out, practically jumping out of her seat.

She immediately told the guard to inform the higherups about the antibiotics.

She said, Here’s the deal: if you leave all the antibiotics with us, we’ll give you a villa in the Guardian District, rentfree, with all utilities covered.”

Her eyes stayed glued to Chloe, afraid she might say no, so she quickly added, And on top of that, our base is willing to throw in 500 pounds of food as well.”

As soon as she said that, the refugees totally lost it.

Shit, antibiotics are worth that much? If I’d known, I would’ve dragged a whole sack of them out when I escaped,” one guy blurted out.

Some folks slapped their thighs in frustration.

My family owns a pharmacy. How did I not think to grab some meds before we bailed?another person groaned.

Shawn and Daisy’s eyes practically popped out in shock.

They couldn’t believe their ears.

They thought, Five hundred pounds of food? That could keep us fed for ages.

The way they stared at Chloe now was full of greedy calculation.

Deal,” Chloe replied.

Everyone was practically green with envy as Chloe snagged the keys to her new villa.

Molly was so excited that she started bouncing up and down.

Awesome! Free water and electricity!she cheered.

Joan gave her a light smack on the head and said, Don’t get ahead of yourself. That water’s probably dirty. It is okay for laundry and showers, but don’t even think about drinking it.

And the electricity? You’ll only get it for a few hours each day.”

Molly pouted.

Still, that’s not bad at all,she said.

Including the kids, there were over a dozen of them, and everyone was getting along like one big happy family.

Evan and Renee’s family managed to join their crew, too.

Chloe gave the boy, who was still spaced out, a quick pat on the shoulder.

Quit daydreaming and show us the way,she said.

They didn’t know their way around the base at all, so having someone to guide them was a real help

Yeah, yeah, okay?the boy replied, finally snapping out of it.

The Guardian District was a long way from where they started, and they ended up walking for ages. By the time they finally made it to the villa section, night had already fallen.

They chose a villa at the edge of the neighborhood. It had plenty of space, and even came with a bit of extra land out back.

As they walked, the boy excitedly explained everything about the base, barely pausing for breath.

Basically, the base was split into two main factions: the military and the powered humans.

After the apocalypse hit and powered humans began showing up, firearms and explosives didn’t pack the same punch.

The military guys were pretty set in their ways, divided by their own interests. They cared more about helping refugees and even ran soup kitchens to feed them for free.

Because of that, they had fewer supplies and didn’t hold nearly as much sway in the base as the powered humans.

Sure, the military tried to recruit powered human teams, but when it came to real benefits, people weighed their options and picked whichever base chief served their interests best.

After all, the military was all about tough work and always putting others first. Honestly, who’d volunteer for that?

On top of that, the boy spilled everything he knew about the base, not leaving out a single detail.

Chloe unlocked the villa, and inside, it was clean and spacious, with a practical elegance that stood out even in the apocalypse.

What really caught everyone off guard was the central heating. It was a rare luxury in times like these, and honestly, a real lifesaver.

The villa had three floors and eight big rooms, easily enough to accommodate their whole team with room to spare.

Chloe claimed a room for herself; Noah bunked with the mutant cheetah. Since Frank’s family was the biggest, they snagged the largest room.

Since Molly was the only girl, she got her own room, and she’d be sharing it with Chiara.

Liana picked the smallest room, while Evan and Renee took another one for themselves.

After everyone had chosen, there were still two spare rooms. Chloe decided to leave the two rooms for Linda and Filip upon their arrival.

In addition to the bedrooms, the villa had a few large storage rooms. With a little tidying up, they could easily fit more people if needed.

Everyone was busy picking out their rooms, and that’s when Chloe realized the boy was still lingering awkwardly by the door.

She glanced outside. It was only six o’clock, but it was already pitch black, so dark that one couldn’t see a thing.

It’s way too dangerous to head back now. Just stay here for the night and head out in the morning,” Chloe told the boy.

Chloe grabbed a black backpack from her room.

She handed it over to the boy and said, Here, this is for you: five packs of pasta, some bottled water, bread, and a few survival biscuits. It’s your reward.”

Suddenly, she remembered something and pulled out three white soup tickets. She added, These are our newcomer soup

tickets. I don’t need them anymore, so they’re yours.”

At that, Frank and the others just shoved all their soup tickets into the boy’s hands.

None of us has time to stand in line for soup. Just take them,” Frank said.

The boy was so overwhelmed that he couldn’t hold back his tears.

There was just so much stuff, he was at a total loss. TThis is way too much,” he stammered, wide.

Don’t worry about it, we really don’t need them. Just take them,Chloe said casually.
