Chapter 124Â
Frank smirked, stepped right up, and put himself in front of the gun. He said, “Alright, let me see what a death sentence feelsÂ
like”Â
He laughed out loud, not giving a damn about the sniper rifle pointed at him.Â
His power was all about close combat and defense. Forget a sniper rifle; even if a regular zombie got its hands on hirm, it wouldn’t leave a scratch.Â
Someone with Frank’s kind of absolute defense was one of a kind so far, so people still kept their guard up around him.Â
Frank wore a cocky grin. They weren’t looking for trouble, but if it showed up, they sure weren’t going to chicken out.Â
The real deal was, they had what it took to leave the base whenever they felt like it.Â
By now, most of the powered humans in the hall had made themselves scarce, leaving only a few who looked at Frank like he’d lost his mind.Â
They thought, ‘Is this guy for real? Is he actually challenging the base right to their faces?‘Â
They gave Frank a mental three–second funeral.Â
They thought, “Too bad about those three knockout girls in their crew!Â
William was so mad at Frank’s cockiness that he couldn’t help but laugh. He started clapping, clicking his tongue in mockÂ
amusement.Â
“Good, very good,” he said.Â
Ever since he became a level–three powered human and took charge of the Awakened Group, nobody had ever openly provoked him like this.Â
He shot a look at his man, and the powered human with the gun pointed at Frank didn’t hesitate for a second before pulling the trigger.Â
FrankÂ
wasÂ
With a loud bang, everyone instinctively shut their eyes, done for. But when they opened their eyes, they were just frozen in shock.Â
Instead of a gruesome scene with Frank’s brains everywhere, what they saw was Frank standing there, grinning with his arms crossed, cool as ever.Â
“Guess you missed, huh?” Frank taunted.Â
He glanced down at the ground, shook his head, and smirked. He said, “Seriously? The bullets are all squashed. Did you guys make your bullets out of tofu or what?”Â
As soon as he said that, everyone’s eyes darted to the bullet lying on the floor. It was completely squashed: no doubt it had slammed right into Frank. People just stared, stunned, unable to believe what they were seeing.Â
All eyes were locked on the bullet, and even William couldn’t hide his shock.Â
William squatted down, grabbed the bullet off the floor, and checked it out. Inside, he was totally freaking out.Â
Even Chloe was staring at Frank in disbelief. She’d expected him to dodge, but he just stood there and tanked the shot like it was nothing.Â
She thought, ‘Didn’t he just hit level three last night?‘Â

Honestly, if she were in his shoes, there’s no way she could just shrug off a bullet like that.Â
Of course, Chloe’s powers were all about offense, while Frank was pure defense: a real tank–class powered human.Â
They were in totally different leagues.Â
Just then. William fixed Frank with a heavy stare and asked, “You a Tier 3 powered human?”Â
It was phrased like a question, butÂ
Frank just gave a noncommittal shruÂ
said it like he already knew the answer.Â
“That woman tried to snatch one of arguing her case.Â
ourÂ
embers, so we had no choice but to light back,” Emily said, stepping forward andÂ
She was sharp; she knew that only by revealing their true strength could they actually stand a chance at getting fairÂ
treatment.Â
William’s expression instantly improved, and he burst out laughing.Â
He said, “It’s all just a misunderstanding. So, powerhouse, any interest in joining our group?Â
“Our base chief is desperate for talent. Any powered human with real skills gets the best perks here.”Â
He made it clear he was only talking to Frank. None of the others even got a second glance.Â
Before Frank could answer, loud laughter rang out from outside.Â
“Where’s the human with healing ability?” someone called.Â
The man who strode in was dressed in full military gear, with a square jaw, sharp brows, and clear eyes. He walked with a straight back, exuding that unmistakable military vibe.Â
Anyone could see he was an officer.Â
He was followed by a tall, skinny guy. As soon as they walked into the hall, the tall guy started scanning the crowd, clearly searching for someone. When he spotted Chloe, his face lit up with a big grin.Â
“Captain Yates! Finally tracked you guys down,” he called out.Â
This was Peyton, the squad leader of those unlucky grunts they’d run into back in the village.Â
Peyton looked at Chloe, practically buzzing with excitement. He said, “I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Thought maybe you didn’t make it.Â
“Heard there was a human with healing ability here, and I figured it had to be you, so I rushed right over.”Â
Chloe barely acknowledged Peyton’s excitement and asked coolly, “Did you find my family yet?”Â
Peyton scratched his head and said, “Sorry, I’ve been swamped since I got to the base yesterday. But don’t worry, I’ll issue a search order right now and get people looking.”Â
Chloe waved him off and said, “I already put out the task. Just distribute their photos and names to everyone.”Â
“Whoa, healing ability?” The crowd gasped, eyes popping in disbelief.Â
Today had been one shock after another. Everyone was just stunned, unable to process it all.Â
The moment William realized Chloe was that rare human with healing ability, he instantly forgot about Frank and zeroed inÂ

on her.Â
“So you’re the famous human with healing ability? I’ve heard a ton about you,” William said, reaching out to shake Chloe’sÂ
hand.Â
As he did, his mind was racing with a million thoughts.Â
He’d always figured Chloe was just Frank’s girl, but turns out she had gotten this rare ability herself.Â
And judging by her unique outfit, he wasÂ
prettyÂ
sure she hadn’t even revealed her true power yet.Â
William thought, I’ve got to recruit her for my own team. No way I’m letting the military snatch her away.Â
Meanwhile, the officer, who was coming with Peyton, stepped forward, eager to build a connection with Chloe.Â
The officer said, “Captain Yates, thank you so much for taking care of Peyton along the way. He’s actually our commander’s grandson. We’ve set up a dinner back at our place. Hope you can join us.”Â
Everyone looked around, faces full of confusion.Â
They thought, ‘Captain Yates?Â
‘So those two powerhouse guys are just her teammates, and this girl is actually the captain?Â
‘Guess in the apocalypse, nothing is ever what it seems.Â
William’s mind was blown. He’d been so sure Frank was the captain, but turns out he’d been completely wrong.Â
His eyes flashed with a mix of shock, envy, and something he couldn’t quite put into words.Â
With both the officer and William reaching out, Chloe didn’t hesitate: she went straight for a handshake with the officer.Â
She gave William a courteous nod.Â
“Hey everyone, it’s my first time here at the base. Hope you’ll help me get settled in,” she said with a friendly smile.Â
Peyton grinned and said, “Captain Yates, how about coming over to my place for a meal?”Â
William quietly withdrew his hand, his eyes clouded with complicated emotions. After all that chaos, he couldn’t help but think, ‘Damn, looks like the military’s gonna steal this rare healing ability right out from under my nose.Â
‘But it’s the apocalypse, after all. What really matters now? Resources and benefits.Â
William said, “Captain Yates, I never thought someone your age could be a healer. You really put all the guys to shame.Â
“We’d be honored to have you join our Awakened Group. Even if you just help out with support, you’ll get the same supplies as our fighters.”Â
A collective gasp echoed through the hall.Â
It was obvious: those perks were hard to resist.Â
Chloe kept her cool, looked over both groups, and said evenly, “Sorry, but we’re not looking to join any group right now.Â
“But if you guys ever need a hand, just say the word: we’re happy to help.”Â
