Chapter 145Â
Emily and Mindy hung their heads, looking totally defeated, and said in unison, “We shouldn’t have caused you any trouble,”Â
“Wrong!” Chloe shot back.Â
Huh? Wrong?‘ Emily and Mindy thought, exchanging confused glances.Â
Chloe let out a long sigh as she met their innocent, puzzled eyes,Â
“Next time, don’t even try to reason with people like that. Just take them out on the spot. If you can’t, have your teammates handle it for you,” Chloe said.Â
Emily muttered, “But you didn’t take them out.”Â
Chloe rubbed her forehead, exasperated, and leaned in close to Emily’s ear.Â
“Check out all the places people could be hiding around us,” Chloe whispered.Â
That was when Emily finally noticed all the sharp eyes watching them from the shadows. Most of them were official powered humans.Â
They hadn’t been here before. But now that they’ve shown up, there was no way they’d let Chloe kill Felix.Â
Chloe whispered again, “But it’s all good. That cripple revealed his powers, so he’s definitely getting sent to check out the Medical Tower. By then…”Â
Emily’s eyes lit up. ‘Right! Why didn’t I think of that?‘ she thought.Â
After all the drama was over, Chloe put up a small flag outside her villa, planning to open a little shop.Â
She realized that swapping food for cores was way faster and more efficient than going out to get them herself.Â
She hired a few craftsmen to seal off the whole villa courtyard and installed a window in the wall so customers could check out the goods inside.Â
This way, her main clients were elite powered humans.Â
Compared to the energy in emeralds, mutant cores had a way bigger impact on her spiritual space.Â
As Quentin and his patrol team from the Guardian District passed by Chloe’s villa, they stopped in their tracks.Â
“Hey, are you still taking emeralds?” Quentin asked.Â
Linda, sitting by the window, answered quickly, “Yeah, but let me see the quality first.”Â
The patrol guys hurriedly pulled plastic bags out of their pockets.Â

Emeralds that used to be worth a fortune were now just poured out of plastic bags onto the counter with a loud clatter.Â
“These are all pretty good quality. I can give you 25 muffins for them. How does that sound?” Linda asked.Â
The soldiers, all looking neat and well–groomed, couldn’t hide their excitement.Â
Quentin rubbed his hands together and asked, “So, is one muffin worth two pieces of bread?”Â
Linda nodded.Â
“Then, how about we trade for 10 muffins and 30 pieces of bread? Is that cool with you?” Quentin asked.Â
“Sure,” Linda replied.Â
She quickly wrapped up the food and handed it over.Â
Seeing those muffins, the stoic soldiers almost got misty–eyed.Â
There were ten guys in the squad, so Quentin handed out one muffin and three pieces of bread to each of them.Â
“Quentin, we can’t take this. The emeralds were all found by your wife and daughter…” one soldier said.Â
The guys in the back quickly waved their hands, thinking they’d be lucky to get even a taste. They never thought they’d get this much to themselves.Â
Quentin just burst out laughing. “It’s thanks to you guys always watching out for my wife and daughter when we’re out there. Enough talk; let’s split it up together.”Â
The rest of the soldiers thought about the hungry mouths waiting at home and didn’t say no.Â
Now they were even more set on sticking with Quentin, no matter what.Â
It was already late, and the patrol team finished divvying up the food and was about to leave.Â
“Wait!” Chiara called out to stop them.Â
Quentin saw it was the little girl he’d rescued the other day and smiled at her, a bit confused.Â
“Hey, young lady, is there something you need?” he asked.Â
Chiara gave him a sweet smile. “Thank you for saving me that day. Here are your clothes; they’re all cleanÂ
now.”Â
Quentin’s coat was neatly folded and placed inside a big bag.Â
He took it with a big grin. ‘Perfect timing. We don’t have any warm coats at home, and Maria’s been going out wrapped in a blanket. Now she’s got something warm to wear!Â
“No need to thank me. It’s just what we soldiers do,” Quentin said.Â

With that, he turned and walked away.Â
When he got home, he grabbed the coat and wrapped it around Maria.Â
As he was doing that, a few food containers tumbled out, packed with pasta, beef stew, and ribs.Â
Maria let out a scream, then quickly clapped a hand over her mouth.Â
“W–Where did this come from?” she stammered.Â

Suddenly realizing something, she stiffened, grabbed Quentin by the collar, and gave him an earful.Â
“Don’t tell me you stole this for yourself!” she snapped,Â
Quentin threw up his hands. “Honest to God, I’d never do something like that!”Â
Maria pointed at the dishes she hadn’t seen since before the apocalypse. “Explain it.”Â
Quentin told her the whole story about Chiara again.Â
Maria finally got it.Â
“No wonder even a blockhead like you landed such a sweet gig. Must be that little girl’s backer working their magic for you,” she said.Â
Quentin scratched his head, his slow brain just couldn’t wrap around it. “No way,” he mumbled.Â
Maria shot him a sharp look. “Of course that’s it! You’re so clueless and haven’t even fought zombies or done anything special, so why would the higher–ups suddenly give you a transfer?”Â
The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became.Â
“Now that you’re patrolling that area, make sure to take extra care of Chiara and the others from now on,” she reminded him.Â
On one hand, she wanted to show gratitude for the gift; on the other, she hoped to build a good relationship and at least score some points.Â
“Alright, got it.” Quentin nodded.Â
Not in a million years would he have imagined that just by listening to Maria today, his family’s whole life would be completely transformed.Â

It was still the dead of night, long before the sun had even thought about rising.Â
Over in the Guardian District’s square, several squads of soldiers and powered humans had already gathered.Â
After talking it over with everyone, Chloe decided not to bring everyone along, since there were kids at home who needed looking after.Â

Frank and his wife stayed behind.Â
When it was time to line up, the Blaze Squad were stuck in the back row, half–asleep as they listened to Richard’s righteous speech from up on stage.Â
Then Graham stepped up and talked the same old stuff, all about duty to the nation and whatnot.Â
While the speeches went on up top, the powered humans and military were locked in a silent standoff.Â
Someone from the powered human team snarked, “Wow, is the military this desperate? They even dragged women and kids onto the field now.”Â
Chloe scratched her head, suddenly sensing that something was off.Â
“Wait, did they just mean us?‘ she thought.Â
She glanced at Emily, Mindy, Molly, Renee and Evan standing next to her.Â
Honestly, her team did fit the stereotype.Â
The soldiers just stood ramrod straight, rifles slung over their shoulders, motionless as they listened attentively to Graham’s speech.Â
They didn’t even bother to respond to the powered humans‘ taunts, acting like they didn’t hear a thing.Â
“Tsk, can they even run with those heavy guns?” one of the powered humans sneered.Â
Another chimed in, “Exactly! Ms. Elise Howell is space–powered. She doesn’t have to carry a single thing.”Â
Chloe and Renee shared a glance. Neither bothered to say a word.Â
A powered guy laughed, “Nowadays, powered humans rule the world! You soldiers might be well–trained, but you’re just ordinary people with no powers. Take away your guns and ammo, and you’re nothing but dead weight.”Â
