Chapter 147Â
“Hey, losers, I’m gonna have my way with this woman right in front of you today,” Tristan sneered.Â
That was all it took to set the soldiers off. They whipped out their guns and aimed them straight at the powered humans.Â
It was like one wrong move, and their brains would get blown out.Â
Guns might not be much use against zombies, but when it came to humans, they were still the deadliest weapon around.Â
“What are you trying to pull?” a powered human demanded.Â
At the same time, the other powered humans called on their powers, ready to throw down.Â
The folks in the back had no clue what was happening, but when they saw the standoff, they quickly pulled out their guns or called on their powers to shield their teammates.Â
Graham and Richard quickly noticed something was wrong over here.Â
They immediately intervened and shut it down with authority.Â
Graham snapped, “Seriously? You’re still fighting among yourselves at a time like this?”Â
Richard swept everyone with a cold glare, his voice calm. “You’re all my powered humans. How many times have I told you? No infighting, no killing each other. Do you really think those soldiers won’t open fire on you guys?”Â
He kept preaching, sounding all earnest, but everyone could tell he was favoring his own crew.Â
Chloe curled her lip with a scoff. ‘See? That’s the difference between the old–school military and these new official teams.’Â
The two sides nearly came to blows. While Richard kept going on about military discipline, he obviously wanted to tear into them for acting out of line.Â
He was really arrogant, rude, and selfish.Â
But guys like him were clever. He always covered for his crew. Even when they messed up, he’d just pin the blame on someone else.Â
As for the military, right or wrong, even just standing up for themselves would get the soldiers blamed and punished.Â
Because they were soldiers, the so–called people’s defenders.Â
That huge label practically stressed every single soldier out.Â
That was why the military couldn’t get any fresh faces, and whatever they tried, there was always somethingÂ

tying their hands.Â
After sizing up the situation, Richard turned his gaze to Chloe, his eyes lighting up with greedy intent.Â
He burst out laughing at Graham. “No hard feelings, but looks like one of my guys has a thing for yours.Â
Then he looked at Tristan and Chloe and said, “Why don’t you both stay here? Let me play Cupid for youÂ
two.”Â
Richard figured that, as long as Chloe stuck around, he had a hundred tricks up his sleeve to make her hisÂ
He thought it was a done deal, but Graham shot him down without hesitation.Â
Graham’s face turned livid.Â
Chloe was insanely powerful, and he’d gone through hell just to get her to join the mission.Â
Even if she were just a regular girl, there was no way he’d ever agree to something like that.Â
“Richard, give up on this idea. I’m not agreeing,” Graham said, his voice cold and resolute.Â
Meanwhile, seeing even Richard egging him on, Tristan immediately tried to grab Chloe and haul her off.Â
But the next second, one of his arm went flying through the air.Â
Noah stood there, gripping a fire axe, fixing the tall guy with a chilling glare.Â
Richard fumed, feeling his authority had just been thrown in his face.Â
“Graham, take a look at your people! He attacked innocent civilians; doesn’t that break every rule in the military book?” he snapped.Â
Graham’s chest rose and fell with anger as he replied coldly, “Sorry, but they’re not regular soldiers. They’re just powered humans I brought in for this mission.”Â
After the two traded heated words for a while, it was getting late, so the whole squad finally moved out.Â
Chloe could feel the powered humans‘ eyes burning into her.Â
Several of them even gestured like they were going to cut her throat.Â
All this time, whenever the official powered humans faced off against the military, it was always the powered humans who came out on top.Â
But today, Chloe handed them their loss.Â
Nothing but her death would settle the score for them.Â
The other Blaze Squad members caught on to what was happening and quietly drifted to the back of theÂ
group.Â

Those ruthless powered humans traded looks, then started moving around without a word, ending up at theÂ
rear too.Â
Up front, the top powered humans and soldiers were clearing the way, so the ones in the back just cruised along without having to do a thing.Â
Finally, the commotion here drew a horde of zombies, and everyone started fighting for their lives to take them downÂ
A group of over thirty powered humans fought off zombies while slowly closing in on the Blaze Squad members, their eyes sharp and ruthless.Â
Chloe and her crew exchanged looks and headed for the alley, quickly putting some space between themselves and the main group.Â
Of course, the over thirty powered humans closed in, boxing them in.Â
Tristan cracked his neck, grinning with his yellow teeth. “Hey, pretty girl, tonight us guys are gonna have a taste of you.”Â
Chloe just laughed instead of getting angry. “Go ahead. I’m waiting.”Â
Her response was downright bizarre.Â
One of the powered humans next to Tristan tugged at his sleeve. “You think this is a setup?”Â
Tristan smacked him on the head. “What setup? It’s just a bunch of weaklings and women. Hell, they even brought a pet cat along for the mission.”Â
His contempt was written all over on his face.Â
He barked, “Boys, grab her alive! Tonight, let’s all have ourselves a good time.”Â
Tristan’s cocky attitude barely lasted a second before he realized something was wrong.Â
He spun around only to see the alley entrance sealed off by a solid, see–through wall of ice. Chloe strolled over, fire axe in hand.Â
‘Man, this place is perfect for taking these guys out and looting them. No one’s ever gonna find out,‘ Chloe mused.Â
Tristan froze, his eyes wide with shock.Â
Three seconds later, the Blaze Squad strode out of the alley, leaving nothing but corpses in their wake.Â
Emily used her spirit power to sense and then pointed north. “The main group’s that way.”Â
They hurried after the group.Â
When the powered humans saw Chloe and her crew catching up, they stared in disbelief.Â

They thought, ‘Wait, didn’t we send people to take care of them? Did Tristan not find her, or did he screw up and let them get away?‘Â
They stretched their necks, peering behind Chloe and her crew; none of the guys they’d sent out were anywhere to be seen.Â
Peyton hurried over, looking anxious. “Captain Yates, are you alright?”Â
“I’m fine. Just got held up by a few mutant creatures,” Chloe replied.Â
Peyton gave her a once–over, then let out a long sigh of relief. “There’s an abandoned five–star hotel up ahead. Let’s take a quick break before we move on.”Â
“Okay,” Chloe replied.Â
As she walked past David, one of the powered humans, he suddenly called out to her. “Stop right there.”Â
Chloe raised an eyebrow. “Got a problem?”Â
David glanced back the way she’d come, but there wasn’t a single shadow in sight.Â
“Where are those thirty–something powered humans I sent to protect you guys?” he demanded.Â
‘Protect?‘ Chloe sneered silently, wanting to applaud his fancy excuse.Â
Molly blinked up at David, all innocence. “Do you mean that tall, skinny guy who’s into Chloe?Â
“He was such a good guy! When he saw Chloe getting chased by zombies, he grabbed thirty–something people and rushed straight into the horde, telling us to run ahead.Â
“I guess they’re probably all gone now.”Â
‘What?‘ David was stunned. He knew how selfish Tristan was; no way he’d risk his neck for someone else.Â
On the top of that, they were sent out to wipe Chloe and her crew out, not to play the hero.Â
