Chapter 149 

When William gave the nod, the soldiers‘ faces lit up with joy. 

They were soldiers, but they were also real people with feelings. 

Of course they loved good food. But their faith and strict discipline always made them hold back. 

The soldiers lined up in perfect order, quickly getting their bread, muffins, and steak, so excited they could barely hold back their tears. 

As they ate, most of the soldiers secretly tucked the steak and muffins into their jackets, unable to bring themselves to eat them right away. 

Compared to the scramble for food that just happened with the powered humans, the soldiers were so much more disciplined. 

“How do you guys even have a space–powered human?” Elise’s voice was sharp, her eyes on Renee practically dripping with poison. 

“If you can awaken as a space–powered human, why can’t we?” Emily retorted. She put her hands on her hips, stepping in front of Renee to shield her. 

Elise screamed, “No way! You lowlifes don’t deserve space powers!” 

“You’re the real dirtbag! Your entire family’s garbage!” Emily shouted, looking like she was about to jump up and throw hands. 

Elise was stunned by the insult. Ever since the apocalypse, her space power had made her a big shot. 

She’d killed countless people, and no one had ever dared talk to her like that before. 

“You’re asking for it!” Elise snapped. 

She stepped forward, ready to grab Emily and smack her mouth shut. 

All of a sudden, her head felt like it had been hit hard. The pain was so bad she curled up on the floor, writhing in agony. 

Felix stepped forward and barked at Emily, “Stop your spirit attack right now, or…” 

“Or what?” Chloe sauntered out, beckoning to Felix with a finger. “Wanna have a go?” 

The powered humans all burst out laughing, looking at Chloe as if she was a joke. 

“Damn, this chick’s got some guts, actually challenging you! Captain Stone, show her who’s boss!” one of them shouted. 

“Yeah, make it a bet! Loser has to do a bare–assed strip dance!” another chimed in.

Chapter 149 

The powered humans burst out laughing, looking at Chloe with hungry, sleazy eyes. 

None of them noticed that Felix’s face had turned ugly. 

“Are you really gonna go against me, Captain Yates?” Felix growled, clenching his fists. 

“Says you. You guys picked a fight first, didn’t you?” Chloe shot back, her tone full of mockery. 

The tense standoff broke up with bad blood, and Felix led his powered human squad away.

Before leaving, he tossed a threat. “Colonel York, we’re going our separate ways. Let’s see who can grab more meds. Don’t regret it later.” 

Emily yelled after them, “You damn idiots! You’re the ones who’ll be crying later!” 

Honestly, it was better to split up. The powered humans might be stronger, but all they ever did was pick up the scraps after the soldiers. 

If they stayed together, the soldiers’d just have to keep worrying the powered humans would stab them in the back. 

Chloe apologized to William, “Sorry for the hassle I caused you guys.” 

William let out a sigh of relief. “I should be thanking you. I was just wondering how to shake those 

Those powered humans were like leeches, seriously driving William nuts. 

Just then, one young soldier walked up to Renee, looking a bit shy. 

“Excuse me, Renee, I’m already full. Could you store the rest of my food for me?” he asked. 

The soldier was holding a slab of steak and two muffins. 

Looking around, the rest of the soldiers had the exact same leftovers. 

They only ate two pieces of bread each.

William scratched his head, looking a bit awkward.

“Those cores are pretty heavy. Carrying them in our backpacks will slow us down. Might as well give them to her first, he thought. 

Chloe didn’t hesitate; she just scooped up all the cores from the soldiers.

She smiled, “Since all the cores you guys collected are mine now, that counts as working for me. So, I’ll cover all your three meals a day until we get back to base,” 

The soldiers all drew in a sharp breath. 

‘Feeding a squad of hundreds even once would cost a fortune. Just who on earth is Captain Yates?‘ they wondered. 

Just then, Molly called out urgently, “Chloe, danger! We need to get out of here, now!” 

The Blaze Squad members all knew how reliable Molly’s precognitive power was, and they all looked alarmed. 

“Which way do we go?” Chloe asked. 

After a moment of concentration, Molly pointed in a direction. “That way.” 

Chloe filled Peyton and William in on Molly’s ability, leaving th two unsure and uneasy. 

“Trust a seven–year–old to lead hundreds of soldiers? This sounds like a joke,’ they thought. 

William looked at Molly, hesitating. “Are you sure there’s danger that way?” 

Molly nodded seriously. “It’s no problem for my team, but you guys are just not strong enough. If things go south, you’ll lose a lot of people.” 

William froze, not knowing what to say. Getting dismissed as weak by a little girl was honestly kind of embarrassing. 

Peyton said firmly, “Mr. York, let’s trust Molly. Her power is no joke.” 

After hesitating for a bit, he added, “Seriously, don’t look down on the Blaze Squad. When there were only nine of them, they wiped out more than ten thousand regular zombies.” 

“What?” Tristan froze, his eyes wide with shock. 

‘Did I just hear that right? Is Peyton for real? This is crazy,‘ William thought, completely thrown off. 

“They’ve only got a handful of people in their squad, but there are three fourth–level powered humans, three third–level, and the rest are all elite second–level powered humans,” Peyton explained. 

At that, every soldier fell silent. Even these tough, well–trained guys couldn’t hide how stunned they were. 

“You gotta be kidding me. Seriously?” William blurted out, totally in disbelief. 

His jaw dropped. ‘No wonder Graham handpicked the Blaze Squad for, this mission. 

‘Holy shit, there are actually fourth–level powered humans in this world? 

‘And the Blaze Squad’s got three of them at the same time? What kind of god–tier squad is this?‘

William shot to his feet and barked at the troops, “Leave!” 

Even though this whole thing sounded insane, William was sure Graham wouldn’t have personally picked someone to join the base for no reason. 

Peyton wasn’t the type to joke about something this serious. 

The squad of hundreds cleared out fast, and barely ten minutes later, a swarm of zombies, led by several super zombies, came bearing down on the area. 

The deafening zombie howls filled the air, mixed with the terrified screams of the powered humans. 

“You bastards, protect me!” Elise shouted. She and her crew were desperately sprinting from the end of the street, chasing after the retreating soldiers. 

The slowest ones were instantly swallowed up by the zombie horde. 

In barely ten minutes, their 400–strong squad was cut down to just over 100, devastated by the attack.

In a supermarket crossing the main street, a handful of beggars in ragged winter coats huddled together, lips tinged blue and eyes hollow as they stared blankly out the window. 

One boy, burning with fever, was curled up in a corner, looking pitiful and helpless. 

“Don’t be scared. I’ll protect you, I promise,” the boy murmured, pulling his little sister close.
