Several homeless men nearby, unkempt and grimy, huddled together with ghostly pale faces, their empty as they gazed out at the world.

None of them batted an eye at the boy curled up in the corner.

Some even felt a twisted sense of anticipation, just waiting for him to die.

One of the men muttered, Ramon, I told you this place is way too far from the base. Us scavengers just aren’t strong enough. If anything goes wrong, we’re as good as dead. But you just wouldn’t listen. Now none of us are making it out alive.”

Ramon was a middleaged man in his forties, his face covered in pockmarks.

He sneered, How is this my fault? None of you complained back then! Weren’t you all thrilled when we scored those supplies together?

Now that we’re in trouble, suddenly it’s all my fault, huh?”

He was tall and burly. Although he looked pretty weak after days without food, he sounded harsh, and those toadlike bumps all over his face just made him even creepier.

Another man, sounding completely drained, said, Alright, let’s just save our strength and wait for help.”

Everyone fell silent. Waiting for rescue was the only thing they could do now.

But deep down, they knew rescue was never gonna happen. The world was a total mess, and the military could barely save their own skins.

Ramon glanced at the boy curled up in the corner, nudged the guy next to him, and jerked his chin that

Looks like that brat’s not gonna make it much longer,Ramon said.

Give him a day or two, tops,” the other man replied.

They traded a glance, instinctively licking their parched lips.

It wasn’t just them. Even the other group of scavengers were giving the feverish boy in the corner some unreadable looks.

It was as if everyone had silently agreed to just wait for him to die.

No one noticed that the boy, his head tucked between his knees, still had his eyes open.

way.

His little fist, hidden in the bend of his knees, was clenched so tight his knuckles turned white. He gritted his teeth, just barely keeping himself from blacking out.

In his hand was a thin metal needle, and whenever he felt himself fading, he’d prick himself with it to stay awake.

Chapter 150

I can’t die. My mom and sister are waiting for me to come home. They’re counting on me to bring back food, he told himself silently.

Just thinking about his mom, still unconscious in the refugee camp, and his sweet, fragile little sister made his heart twist with pain.

He thought, It’s been so long since I’ve been home. They must be worried sick about me.

Have they had anything to eat? Has anyone tried to hurt them?’

The pain in his heart was so sharp he could hardly breathe, and he felt completely helpless.

He jabbed the needle into his calf again, then pulled it out. The pain left him dazed, but at least it kept him awake.

Dad, you always said I’m the only man left in the family. I have to protect my mom and little sister, and I still need to find Chloe. I won’t let you down,” the boy whispered, his voice barely more than a breath.

His lips turned blue from the cold. He was dressed in nothing but thin clothes, slumped on the ground, too weak to move, and the cold kept creeping in.

So tiredI just want to sleep, the boy thought, his eyelids drooping.

Ramon, look over there. The boy’s out cold, one of the men called out, spotting the boy’s body, stiff and almost frozen.

He exchanged a look with Ramon, let out a wild yell, and charged over.

He’s mine!the man shouted.

I saw him first!another guy yelled back.

He’s one of our scavengers! His body belongs to our team!someone else shouted.

Cut the crap, asshole!someone spat.

The two groups of scavengers went at each other, fighting tooth and nail over who got to claim the corpse.”

Two weeks into the apocalypse, not a single soul left standing was a pushover. Everyone went all out just for a bite to eat; some even pulled out their weapons, fighting tooth and nail.

If one died, that was it. But if they won, they got the corpse, which was meat, one way or another.

While the two groups were busy tearing each other apart, the boy in the corner snapped his eyes open. He quietly pushed himself up and began inching toward the main entrance, careful not to make a sound.

These people were vicious and desperate, and they’d been sizing him up for days. If he didn’t get out now, he’d be dinner for one of these gangs sooner or later.

You son of a bitch! You dare hit me?one of the scavengers yelled.

Chapter 150

I’ll take you down!another scavenger snarled, charging at him.

The scene erupted into chaos, blood splattering everywhere. It didn’t take long to draw a horde of zombies. Shit! The blood’s bringing in zombies! All of you, cut that crap and stop fighting!Ramon bellowed.

Suddenly, Ramon realized the kid’s body had vanished. His eyes darted around the room, searching for any sign of the boy, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Ramon jerked his head up, only to find the gate had somehow been left wide open.

Realizing he’d been played, Ramon hurled his fire axe to the ground, furious. Son of a bitch!he spat.

Everyone finally realized what was going on. They whipped out their knives and butchered the corpse of the guy who’d just been killed, cursing and swearing.

That little bastard played us all. If I ever catch him back at the base, I swear I’ll kill him myself.”

Yeah, I heard he’s got a mom and a little sister. Let’s tie those two up and sell them off.”

The little boy was only running for his life, yet those scavengers thought he’d robbed them of a corpse to eat. They hurled the vilest, filthiest insults at him.

Enough! Let’s hurry up and barricade the doors and windows before the zombies break in,Ramon barked.

Meanwhile, the boy, dazed and delirious from his fever, barely kept his balance as he staggered out of the building, only to see a swarm of zombies rushing straight toward him.

His knees nearly buckled from terror. Gritting his teeth, he spun around and bolted in the opposite direction, running for his life.

Luckily, the heavy smell of blood coming from the building behind was enough to lure the zombies away, buying the boy a precious chance to get away.

But he hadn’t eaten in three days, and with the cold and hunger wearing him down, his legs were so numb he could barely move them. Finally, his strength gave out, and he collapsed facefirst into a snowdrift.

WeirdWhy aren’t there any zombies around here?William murmured, glancing around uneasily.

The closer he got to the Medical Tower, the stranger it seemed. Not even a single zombie, let alone anything mutated, was anywhere to be seen.

Something was definitely off,he thought.

William frowned, Pass down the order: everyone on full alert.”

The silence was terrifying. It could only mean there was something big hiding here, and there might even be more than one.

Chapter 150

Ever since they’d set foot in this area, Molly couldn’t shake the worry from her face.

Chloe, I feel like something dangerous is lurking nearby, but I can’t get a read on how strong it is,Molly murmured, her voice tight with unease.

Chloe nodded and let Phantom Zombie out from her spiritual space to guard Molly.

I heard there’s a large pediatric hospital nearby, and the Medical Tower’s close too. Everyone, stay alert,Chloe warned, her tone serious.

Hospitals were always ground zero for zombie outbreaks, and the ones left inside were usually big bosses.

Everyone edged forward, nerves stretched tight.

Molly was in charge of picking the route for the whole crew, so the Blaze Squad was up front.

With all those armored troops laying down cover ahead, the front line actually turned out to be the safest spot.

A scout jogged back, gave William a quick salute, and reported, There’s a kid up ahead. Looks like he’s completely frozen.”

William frowned, How could a kid suddenly turn up here? Could this be a setup?”

While William was still hesitating, he heard Emily’s excited voice. She pointed tremblingly at the frozen boy not far ahead.
