Elise’s words caught the soldier off guard.

The soldier suddenly snapped a salute to Elise and turned on his heel, leaving without another word. 

“Stop right there!” Elise called out sharply from behind. 

But the soldier kept going, not even glancing back. 

Elise was used to bossing people around just because of her status, and honestly, nobody really liked her. She even went as far as kidnapping a few soldiers and dragging them home against their will. 

When William found out, all hell broke loose. The two sides nearly came to blows before the soldiers were finally released. 

After that, Elise became a total disgrace in the eyes of the military. They couldn’t even stand to talk about her. 

Time ticked by, and the powered humans didn’t dare to leave. They were waiting for the military to depart so they could blend in with them. 

The military also didn’t dare to move around; they were waiting for Chloe to save Filip. 

Right now, the key figure was Filip. 

With night closing in, Elise was shivering in the cold as she pointed at Dallas. “Go ask when we’re leaving,” she snapped. 

Dallas was a sharp woman. She didn’t dare talk back to Elise. She shot Felix a look, got his nod, and headed off. 

Dallas didn’t come back for a long while, and when she did, she looked pretty upset. 

“Seriously, what’s taking so long up there? Why aren’t we moving yet?” Elise S 

Dallas reported, “Word is, the brother of the human who has healing ability got seriously hurt, and she’s trying to save him.” 

Elise exploded, cursing up a storm. 

“When did the military get so out of control? Now, even a little tramp can slow down the whole operation?” As Elise spoke, she stormed up to the front. 

Seeing Chloe made Elise even angrier. Elise glared daggers at William, barely able to contain herself. 

“Colonel York, do you even realize what you’re doing?” she demanded. 

Then Elise jabbed a finger at Chloe. “You’re letting a single woman throw the whole operation off track? Are you really letting a pretty face mess with your head?”

Elise’s voice was loud and sharp, and in a place crawling with danger, her shouting instantly set off a chorus of zombie howls all around them.

“Did you even hear me? Stop wasting time and get the troops moving! Every extra minute we sit here, you’re putting our team at risk. Are you even listening?” she snapped. 

William knew exactly what was going on. He was just as anxious as everyone else. But Blaze Squad had already said they wouldn’t stop the military from heading out, but they were sticking around for their captain, 

Chloe. 

Chloe’s team was a crucial part of this mission. There was no way they could just abandon them. 

Besides, Molly had warned that there was a massive threat lurking nearby, watching them. 

With a fourth–level powered human on their side in Blaze Squad, only a fool would bail early. 

Actually, when they set out, Graham had given William a secret order. Whatever it took, he needed to get Chloe on their side. 

Even if Chloe didn’t join the military, they absolutely couldn’t let Chloe team up with the base chief. 

If that happened, it’d spell doom for the military. 

To William, Elise’s ranting was like music to his ears. He never thought Elise could be so helpful in her own 

way.

He was so passionate that it was like he’d go through fire and brimstone for Blaze Squad. 

His words instantly earned Blaze Squad’s respect and goodwill. 

Elise was so furious that she stomped her foot in frustration. 

From her six hundred–strong squad, barely fifty survivors remained. In weather like this, there was no way they’d dare strike out on their own.

Elise shot Chloe a venomous glare, her eyes practically dripping with hatred.

Suddenly, Noah gave Elise a look so cold that it could freeze water;

Elise shot Felix a venomous glare and stomped her foot hard. “You’re so useless!” she snapped. 

Finally, around 3:30 in the afternoon, the sky was already starting to get dark. 

Molly glanced up at the sky, her face tense. “Uh–oh, I think a blizzard’s about to hit us.” 

“What?” William and the others stared at Molly in shock. 

She nodded earnestly. “I just have this feeling, but I’m not totally sure.” 

But everyone in Blaze Squad knew Molly never said anything she wasn’t sure about. If she had a hunch, she was almost always right. 

William called out, “Scouts, see if there’s anywhere nearby we can hide out from the storm.” 

As he spoke, he raised his binoculars and swept the area, searching for any sign of shelter. 

Emily pointed toward a narrow alley on the right and spoke up. “At the end of the alley, there’s a road that runs north to south. 

“If you head north, there’s a five–star hotel. It’s huge, and the top floor has a buffet. It hasn’t been damaged since the apocalypse, but-” 

Before Emily could finish, Elise let out a yell and bolted toward the alley behind her. 

They were determined to get there first.

Once the others had run off, William noticed Emily hadn’t finished and got impatient. 

“But what?” William asked. 

“But the alley ends in a dead end. There’s a building blocking the way to the main road,” Emily explained. 

‘Wait, what?‘ ran through all their minds, every single one of them stunned. They just stared at the powered humans sprinting away, not knowing what to say. 

One of the group shook his head and muttered, “Geez, those guys are way too impatient. They didn’t even let this miss finish talking.”

Emily turned and rushed over to Chloe, but Noah beat her to it, already helping Chloe up. 

“You alright?” Noah asked softly. 

Chloe looked pale, her legs still wobbly as she got to her feet. 

“I’m okay. I’m just totally drained. Mind if I lean on you for a bit?” she said. 

Phantom Girl stood next to her, unmoving like a statue. 

Suddenly, as Chloe felt herself grow weaker, it was like something powerful was looming over the whole area, making everyone’s skin crawl with fear. 

It felt like an evil spirit had its eyes on them, sending chills down their spines and making cold sweat bead on their skin.
