Elise was dumbfounded. She just couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that those soldiers actually had the nerve to ditch her like that.Â
“Who the hell do you think you are?” Elise spat, her voice dripping withÂ
But before she could finish, a shadow shot through the crowd like lightning, and with a loud smack, a heavy slap landed right across her face.Â
Then, just as quickly, the shadow vanished.Â
No one even saw who did it. Elise’s left cheek was already swelling up, and she spat out a front tooth.Â
Felix hissed, and he saw that strange girl.Â
His pupils shrank, waves of shock crashing through his mind.Â
‘Just what kind of people are the Blaze Squad?‘ Felix wondered, his mind reeling.Â
“Enough with the nonsense. Hand over the cores that belong to us, or we won’t be so nice,” Elise said, her voice cold and commanding.Â
‘She’s still mouthing off, even now?‘ Felix thought, shaking his head.Â
“Oh yeah? Let’s see you try. The cores are right here in my hand. If you’ve got the guts, come and take them,” Chloe taunted.Â
Chloe held out her hand, daring Elise to come and snatch the cores.Â
Felix was scared out of his wits. He grabbed Elise just as she was about to rush forward and snatch the cores.Â
“Don’t be so stubborn,” Felix said, his voice low and urgent.Â
Elise was stunned. “You useless piece of trash, how dare you talk to me like thaÂ
Felix took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. “Miss Howell, the Awakened Group, and the military are on good terms.Â
“Don’t let a small thing like this turn into a conflict. Even if the base chief were here today, he’d back me up.”Â
The soldiers could afford to ignore Elise, but Felix couldn’t.Â
Elise was the base chief’s youngest daughter, and he guarded her like she was made of glass. If anything happened to her, Felix would probably have to spend the rest of his life on the run.Â
He’d finally managed to settle down, and he really didn’t want to go back to that drifting, unstable life.Â
Felix clasped his hands to William. “The base sent us here to support you, so we should be helping each other out. That was our fault earlier, and I’m here to apologize. I hope you won’t hold it against us.”Â

Elise turned her head away, rolling her eyes. “Pfft, loser. All you ever do is run and beg for forgiveness.Â
‘No way those military cowards would actually leave me behind. Not a chance, Elise thought, her disbelief clear.Â
Her muttering was quiet, but still loud enough for plenty of people up fr help but feel bad for Felix.Â
Annoyed, Elise glared at everyone, chin held high, proud as a peacock.Â

“Alright, fine, I’ll team up with you guys and leave, but only if you kick that tramp out and make her hand over that third–level core,” Elise sneered.Â
That was a third–level core. There weren’t even a handful in the whole base.Â
‘If our team’s powered humans weren’t so useless, that tramp would never have lucked out and snatched it, Elise thought, jealousy flaring inside her.Â
The soldiers glanced at each other, all of them looking stunned. None of them could believe what they were hearing.Â
‘So Elise isn’t just some cold–blooded psycho who goes after the innocent. She’s also a clueless idiot who doesn’t know when to quit,‘ they all thought.Â
William looked up and shrugged, sounding genuinely regretful. “Well then, good luck, Miss Howell.”Â
‘What?‘ Liana paused, momentarily stunned.Â
Before she could even process it, the soldiers were already on the move. The lead guy whipped out a mortar launcher and blasted a hole straight through the wall across from them.Â
The explosion echoed loud and clear, setting the nearby zombies howling, but none of them had the guts to come any closer.Â
Elise’s hand shook as she pointed at William, looking totally stunned.Â
“Are you crazy? You actually chose that tramp over me? And what’s with all the attract zombies?” Elise shouted, her voice sharp with disbelief.Â
Don’t you realize that’llÂ
William didn’t even look her way. He just led his team forward, ignoring her completely.Â
It was like even acknowledging her would be a waste of his brain cells.Â
Elise had never been ignored like this before. She was about to blow a fuse. “Can any of you hear me at all?”Â
She reached out, grabbed the soldier who was walking away, and slapped him at once.Â
The soldier was totally caught off guard and took a hard slap. His face turned bright red with rage as he glared at Elise.Â
“What the hell do you think you’re doing, hitting me?” he snapped.Â

He was a soldier, not some robot with no emotions. Getting slapped out of nowhere? Of course, he was pissed.Â
“Yeah, I slapped you. So what? Go ahead, kill me if you dare!” Elise sneered, her voice dripping with defiance.Â
“You,” the squad leader sputtered,Â
But sticking to his discipline as a soldier and his pride as a man, he didn’t just turned on his heel and walked away, not wasting another second onÂ
hand against Elise. HeÂ
Just as Elise was about to lash out again, an eerily pretty girl suddenly appeared right next to her. She was barely five feet tall, looking for all the world like a porcelain doll.Â
When the girl lifted her head, Elise saw that her eyes were no whites at all. The moment their eyes met, Elise recoiled in shock, nearly toppling over.Â
Felix grabbed her from behind just in time, or Elise would’ve gone crashing to the floor.Â
Phantom Zombie stepped forward and sent Felix flying with a single kick.Â
Then she grabbed Elise’s hair and yanked her down hard, and with her free hand, she went to town on Elise’s face, slapping her again and again.Â
“Help! Felix, you lame loser, get over here and save me!” Elise shrieked.Â
In just a few seconds, Elise’s nose was streaming blood from all the slaps.Â
Felix was about to get up and help out, but the moment he heard Elise screaming insults at him, he just shut his eyes and pretended he was out cold.Â
Felix let Phantom Zombie smack Elise until her face was swollen, not lifting a finger to help.Â
“Alright, since she doesn’t want to come with us, no need to push it. Let’s move,” Chloe said, her voice cool and commanding.Â
With a flick of her wrist, Chloe raised a few ice walls, cutting off Elise and her powered humans from the rest of the squad.Â
No way was Chloe letting any chaos–makers sneak into their team.Â
“Stop! You all stop right now! Ah! That tramp, I’m going to kill you!” Elise screamed, her voice shrill withÂ
rage.Â
No matter how much Elise ranted and raved, not a single soldier even glanced back. Their faces were cold, but there was just a hint of amusement at the corners of their lips.Â
Emily sidled up to Chloe and tugged gently at her sleeve. “Chloe, why don’t we just take Elise out?”Â
Chloe didn’t answer right away. She scanned the area, then leaned in and whispered something in Emily’s ear. Emily finally understood.Â
She shut her mouth and didn’t say another word.Â

Mindy pulled Emily aside, curiosity written all over her face. “What did Chloe say?”Â
Emily glanced around to make sure no one was paying attention, then leaned in and whispered, “Elise’s got some serious backing.Â
“Even if we wanted to take her out, we’d have to do it somewhere no or from her side in the military. If we kill her and someone finds out, weÂ
There might be spars trouble.Â
“Plus, she’s a space–powered human. Her spiritual space is probably packed with supplies. Let her scavenge everything she can from the Medical Tower first, then we’ll make our move.”Â
That way, once Elise dumped all the stuff from her spiritual space, they could just scoop it up without breaking a sweat.Â
Mindy’s eyes widened as it all clicked.Â
‘Right, right, right! How did I not think of that?‘ Mindy thought, mentally kicking herself.Â
Surrounded by the military, they kept moving forward, constantly absorbing cores as they went. Before long, everyone was almost back to full strength.Â
But every last core they’d picked up along the way was used up in no time.Â
Even William couldn’t help but marvel at how fast they were burning through cores.Â
‘No wonder Captain Yates doesn’t even bother with medicine. She just goes straight for the cores. With how much they go through, it’s no wonder most people couldn’t afford to keep up,‘ William thought.Â
Maybe it was those three Frostbeasts hanging around nearby, but except for a few zombies lurking in the alley, there were barely any outside. That meant the soldiers could push ahead without much trouble.Â
The group of hundreds made their way to the five–star Evergreen Hotel in no time.Â
Peyton used his tools to pop open the hotel doors like it was nothing. Once everyone was inside, they followed Emily’s lead and wiped out every last zombie in the place.Â
