They watched helplessly as the cores they’d worked so hard to dig out got dumped into the cart, and it stung like crazy, 

But the real jaw–dropper was when Chloe just waved her hand, and all those zombie cores disappeared into her spiritual space in an instant. 

A short guy pointed at Chloe, could barely get the words out. “R–Ramon, th–that woman’s a space–powered hurnant 

The scavengers‘ faces went pale in an instant. 

‘Wasn’t Miss Howell supposed to be the only space–powered human in the whole base?‘ Everyone thought so. When did another one pop up?‘ 

They all knew what it meant to have space powers. That was why Elise ran the show around here. 

Elise wasn’t just bossy because her father was the base chief. That one–of–a–kind ability made her someone nobody dared mess with. 

The scavengers exchanged uneasy glances, and when they noticed Filip glancing their way out of the corner of his eye, they instinctively shuddered. 

“Wait, that’s the space–powered human’s brother? We’re screwed,‘ one of them thought. 

Just then, a familiar, heart–wrenching female voice cried out from behind them. “Wait for me! Wait for us!” 

Everyone turned around. It was Elise. 

She was a far cry from the swaggering, bossy Elise everyone saw yesterday. 

Her hair was a wild bird’s nest, her face was very pale and chapped, and her clothes were ripped to pieces. She looked like she’d been through hell. 

Only a handful of powered humans were left trailing after her. 

It was Felix and James, both top–tier third–level powered humans, plus Dallas and the rest of her crew. 

They all looked like they’d barely made it out alive, beaten down and desperate, like a pack of stray dogs. 

Elise was infamous across the base; she could kill without even blinking. 

Ramon and the others were so terrified. They just wanted to crawl into a hole and hide. 

They were nothing like the soldiers. 

Soldiers had their own code and wouldn’t just kill people on a whim, but a squad of powered humans? They could torture someone to death without even batting an eye. 

The dozen or so‘ scavengers kept shrinking back in fear, but nobody paid them any attention. 

Emily crossed her arms, that grin plastered on her face.

“Look who we have here? I thought it was some stray mutt, but turns out it’s our oh–so–noble Miss Howell,” Emily sneered. 

Emily gave Elise a haughty once–over. “Miss Howell, what happened? Did you get chased around by a pack of dogs or something?” 

Elise finally caught up to the squad, panting hard, and Emily’s savage taunts nearly made her lose it right then and there,

Just as Elise was about to snap back, Felix and James stepped in on either side, holding Elise in place to keep her from causing even more trouble. 

James leaned close and murmured in her car, “Did you forget the mess you landed us in last time?” 

“Sticking with the army is the only shot we’ve got at surviving,” James hissed, his tone sharp and warning, 

Elise felt a chill run down her spine. 

Her father’s crew was all scared still of James, the guy who was always stone–faced, never showing any emotion. 

James hadn’t said a word the whole way. 

Even when all six hundred powered humans they brought along got slaughtered, he just watched, cold and indifferent. that calculating, almost–smirk always lingering in his sharp eyes. 

As soon as James spoke up. Elise clammed up instantly. 

Emily snickered, her voice dripping with sarcasm, “So, where’s all that attitude now? Didn’t you say you’d never stoop to running with us?” 

Emily was so full of herself. Elise was fuming inside, barely holding it together. 

After a few shaky breaths, Elise forced the words out bon clenched teeth, “Sorry. It’s my fault.” 

Emily put on an exaggerated look of disbelief, cupping her ear theatrically. “What was that? I didn’t quite catch it.” 

Elise’s eyes burned red with rage. She could’ve bitten Emily’s head off right then and there. 

And when she looked at the soldiers, every single one of the 

was just minding their own business, pretending not to see a thing, which only made Elise feel even more embarrassed and angry. 

Elise puffed out her cheeks, took a deep breath, and yelled with all the strength she could muster, “I’m sorry!” 

“We’re not deaf, you know! Why are you yelling like that? Trying to 

gtodaiw every zombie in the area? Emily shot her a glare. 

Elise was so furious that she could barely see straight. “But you said,” Before she could finish, Felix slapped a hand over her mouth, terrified she’d say something that would get them all killed. 

Felix shot William a fawning look. “Major York, we’d like to tag along with you to the Medical Tower. What do you say?” 

William didn’t answer. Instead, he looked over at Chloe. They might have the numbers, but when it came to real Blaze Squad was the one who really ran the show. 

Chloe spoke up, her tone cool and indifferent. “You can tag along, but there are three conditions.”

“What? There are conditions?” Elise tried to protest, but Felix quickly slapped a hand over her mouth, muffling her with a nervous, awkward laugh. 

“Captain Yates, just say whatever you want, we’ll do our best to meet your terms,” Felix said, forcing a smile, but inside he was sweating bullets, terrified Chloe would hit them with some humiliating, soul–crushing demands. 

“It’s simple. First, Elise keeps her mouth shut and doesn’t mess with the squad. 

“Second, your powered humans go up front and take the lead. Third, every core you dig up 

Chloe said, her voice cold as steel. 

James just gaped at Chloe, totally stunned.

“What? That’s way too unfair!” Felix blurted out, sounding pissed. 

“Or, you have the option two. When we get to the Medical Tower, the military takes 90% of all the supplies, Chloe said, her tone icy and unyielding. 

“What? No way!” Felix shot back, his voice sharp with disbelief. 

Chloe just shrugged. “Then there’s nothing to talk about.” 

In the end, James gave Chloe a long, heavy stare, then finally nodded, his voice low and resigned. “Fine, we’ll take the first condition.” 

As the squad rolled out, the scavengers were white as a sheet. While everyone else was marching off, they started edging away, hoping to bail before anyone noticed. 

Ticking off Filip was as good as picking a fight with Chloe herself. If even Miss Howell had to toe the line around her, what chance did we have? No way we’d dare cross her, one of them thought, sweating bullets. 

No one noticed, but as the squad rounded the corner, Mindy quietly slipped away with Filip, leaving the group behind. 

The scavengers finally slipped away, each of them looking like they’d just cheated death; relief written all over their faces. 

“Ramon, I was scared out of my mind! Seriously, what’s Filip’s cousin’s deal? Even Miss Howell doesn’t dare mess with her,” one of them whispered, still shaken. 

Ramon shuddered, remembering how close he’d just come to the edge. 

“Enough, let’s just run for it,” Ramon said, his voice tight with fear. 

The dozen or so scavengers bolted back the way they’d come, only to have their escape cut off by two figures suddenly appearing in front of them. 

Mindy held Filip’s hand, her smile looking friendly on the surface but cold underneath. “And just where do you think you’re going?” 

Her voice sounded sugary sweet, but it sent chills down their spines and creeped them out to the core. 

With a thud, the scavengers dropped to their knees in the snow, faces pale as ghosts, bowing and groveling for their lives. “Boss, please, we’re begging you. Just let us go!” 

“Yeah, yeah, if we’d known your cousin was a space–powered human, we wouldn’t have dared cross you, not even if someone put a gun to our head!” one of them stammered, voice shaking. 

The whole group didn’t even try to hide how desperate they were; they just hit the ground and begged for mercy. 

To the weak, they were the stuff of nightmares, predators who did whatever they pleased. But to the strong, they were just bugs waiting to be squashed. 

Everyone who’d made it this far had their own way of surviving. Just a glance, and one could tell if someone was in trouble, or if one could get away with messing with them. 

Chloe was the only one they ever got wrong. She kept her power hidden behind that gorgeous face, and nobody saw her for what she really was.
