The Day Love Betrayed Me and Never the Plan 186

Chapter 186

Chapter 186

Chloe shot Emery a discreet thumbsup.

She continued, Exactly. It’s the apocalypse. Supplies are crazy scarce. It’s almost impossible to replenish anything. With all these refugees, the base will collapse under the weight.

We can still go out and scavenge for supplies now, but what about later? What happens when we can’t even hand out a single piece of cookie?

Emery has a point. It’s survival of the fittest. Only those who tough it out in the apocalypse will make it, and that’s the only way humanity won’t go extinct.”

It sounded heartless, like they were just leaving the old, weak, and sick behind. They had no choice.

With Chloe and Emery cornering him from both sides, Graham finally gritted his teeth, slammed his foot down, and gave his final word.

Fine, I get it,Graham said.

Soon, the new rule was set. From now on, only kids under 14 and seniors over 60 could get free soup every day.

Kids were the future of humanity. If they wanted to keep the species alive, they had to protect them.

As for the elderly, they didn’t have the strength to go out hunting or scavenging for supplies, so the base was willing to look out for them a bit.

But honestly, aside from the few powered humans, hardly any old folks made it to 60 in the apocalypse.

Anyone outside that age range had to fend for themselves and find their own supplies.

Graham knew that once this rule was dropped, it would definitely spark an uproar among the refugees. If things got rowdy, it’d be a real mess.

The tanker truck from Greenhill Base was about to roll in for a supply swap, and he didn’t want them making fun of the base if chaos broke out.

So, Graham decided to hold off on announcing the new rule until the powered humans from Greenhill Base had left.

But beneath the calm surface of the refugee camp, a storm was brewing. In the shadows, thugs lurked like wolves with bloodshot eyes, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Whenever someone walked by, they’d get yanked into the darkness and vanish without a trace.

On the surface, the refugees kept up the pretense of order, but the resentment and madness in their eyes were growing stronger by the day.

They’d been fuming for ages about getting just one bowl of soup a day. They were sick of the situation, but none of them had the guts to leave.

Complaints echoed from every corner of the camp.

Especially those who thought they were too good to go out and hunt for supplies, but were greedy for more, started scheming for other ways to get what they craved.

Every day, in places no one could see, hell was unleashed.

Today at Bluehaven Base, someone must’ve spilled the beans, because gossip was spreading like wildfire.

The old man had just got his bowl of soup, but before he could even taste it, his son and daughterinlaw grabbed it from him.

They shoved him down, shot him a nasty glare, and started yelling at him.

The son snapped, You old fart, still got the nerve to eat at your age? Why aren’t you dead yet?”

The woman spat right in his face. Disgusting. Even at your age, you’re still a greedy pig. Good thing I was watching you, or you’d have scarfed down the whole bowl yourself. Pathetic.”

The old man, his face creased with wrinkles, was left lying there, struggling to get up for ages.

He managed to lift his head and looked around. Some looked pitying, others merely watched it like it was a show. But most just gave him a cold, indifferent glance before turning back to the food line, their eyes hollow and empty.

Hey, you guys hear the latest? Word is, another major base is about to show up here soon,” someone said, voice low but excited.

The couple was just about to walk off when they caught the gossip. They immediately pricked up their ears and leaned in, not wanting to miss a thing.

Seriously? It’s freezing out there, plus all those zombies and mutant freaks. How could anyone make it here?blurted out.

The woman rubbed her hands together, blowing into them for warmth. Come on. That can’t be true, right?”

someone

The rumorspreader puffed out his chest. Listen, my second uncle’s neighbor’s cousin is a powered human. His sources are solid. No way this is fake.”

As soon as he said that, a bunch of refugees crowded around, eager to hear more.

Whenever anyone spoke, their breath came out in white clouds in the icy air.

So, do you know which base it is?someone asked.

How likely is it, really?another chimed in.

My god. If that’s true, that base must be way bigger than Bluehaven Base, someone else blurted out.

Exactly. If they can make it through all those mutants and zombies in temperatures below -76°F, there’s no way that base is weak, someone else chimed in.

At that, everyone fell silent for a moment, new ideas already brewing in their minds.

A few bold ones finally broke the weird, tense quiet.

If that’s true, a bigger base must have way more supplies. Maybe life there is even better than at Bluehaven Base?one of them wondered aloud.

The woman spat in disgust. Are you kidding? This place is hell on earth. I’ve decided. When that new base rolls in, I’m out of here with them.”

Yeah, I’m leaving too,” another person said.

The base chief here doesn’t even treat us like humans. All we get is a bowl of soup and some junk food every day. Who’d want to stick around here?someone else complained.

For real. I didn’t leave with that other group before, but their base is way stronger. They’ve gotta have more food, anothervoice added.

Chapter 186

Once someone spoke up, others started chimning in.

Pretty soon, everyone was swept up in the excitement about ditching this place for the new base.

A strange trend was spreading in the Refugee District. The usual freeloaders, always scheming for handouts, were now busy plotting to leave and follow the new base instead.

But as for the powered humans who actually had some strength, almost none of them were interested in making the move.

They understood better than anyone. In this world, relying on luck or others was pointless. If one wanted to survive, they had to rely on themselves.

News of the refugee camp drama reached Graham and Chloe in no time. The two shared a look and grinned.

Honestly, they couldn’t be happier to see those freeloaders pack up and leave.

Soon enough, those folks would realize that Bluehaven Base was actually the safest and most humane place left in this messedup world.

Three days passed in a flash, and those itching to leave grew even more restless. Their desire to get out was stronger than ever, all eyes fixed on the arrival of Highland Base.

Finally, news came from the watchtowers on both sides of the main gate in Bluehaven Base.

Report. Vehicles from Highland Base spotted,” shouted a guard from the watchtower.

Chloe and Graham shot each other a look and hurried outside together.

A dozen green pickup trucks rolled in, with two tanker trucks sandwiched right in the middle, cruising forward in a tight, orderly convoy.

Along the way, the powered humans inside grew more and more tense. Their earlier arrogance had completely vanished.

Even Hendrix hadn’t said a single word since stepping into Bluehaven.

Zombies were nowhere to be seen, and though the roads were buried under thick snow, it was clear they’d just been freshly cleared. But after two whole days, they hadn’t managed to scavenge even a scrap of supplies.

This kind of insane resource collection power was something not even Highland Base could pull off.

Captain, looks like Elise is a pretty badass spacepowered human,Scarlet said.

Her voice was still seductive, but her expression turned more serious, with a touch of hostility.

Then she suddenly grinned and slipped her arm around Hendrix’s. Captain, I heard Elise has a thing for men. Why not try to seduce her?”

Hendrix gave Scarlet’s nose a playful flick. Having you around is already more than I can handle. If I had another little
