Even as he said that, Scarlet could clearly catch a flicker of hesitation on Hendrix’s face. 

Her arm around him stiffened. Her smile stayed, but her eyes burned with murderous intent. 

‘Elise, huh? Can’t wait to meet you, Scarlet thought. 

The convoy slowly rolled into Bluchaven Base, where William and his crew were already waiting. 

Graham and Chloe, the heads of the two main factions, would never bother to personally greet a few powered humans outside the city gates. 

That would be beneath them. 

But ignoring the visitors wasn’t an option either. They had to send someone with enough status to properly represent Bluehaven Base’s hospitality toward the Highland Base convoy. 

From a distance, they spotted a tall pole rising above the walls, the red flag fluttering in the wind, like a beacon, visible from far away. 

Nina snorted, “Come on. At a time like this, they’re still flying that thing?” 

The others couldn’t help but scoff too. 

Times had changed. In this chaotic world, powered humans ruled the roost. Maybe keeping that flag up was just the soldiers‘ last stubborn hold on their beliefs. 

For the first time ever, the gates of Bluehaven Base swung wide open, and William, standing tall in an open–top vehicle, slowly revealed himself to the crowd. 

When he spotted Hendrix, he could just tell that Hendrix was the one in charge of this crew. 

“Welcome, friends from afar. You must be tired after such a long journey. We’ve got a feast ready inside to give you all a proper welcome,” William said with a hearty laugh. 

Hendrix quickly hopped out of the car, strode up to William, and shook his hand, sizing him up from head to toe with a sharp, appraising look. 

Hendrix sized him up, straight–backed, clean–cut, with the unmistakable bearing of a soldier. 

As their hands met, both men tightened their grip, kicking off their first test of strength. 

But before either could claim victory, they let go just as quickly, neither backing down. 

Hendrix glanced at the insignia on William’s uniform and offered a stiff smile. “Well, I’m honored to have a major come out to greet us in person.” 

After a bit of polite banter, the convoy, sixteen green pickup trucks and two massive fuel tankers, rolled slowly into Bluehaven Base. 

The refugees in the base caused an uproar. They abandoned the soup line and flocked over to join the commotion, eyeing the Highland Base crew like hungry wolves spotting fresh bread. 

“Welcome, powered humans from Highland Base.” 

“Welcome, powered humans from Highland Base.” 

“Welcome, powered humans from Highland Base.” 

Shouts echoed all around, and Hendrix was momentarily stunned. ‘Am I really this popular? he wondered. 

He flicked his attention–grabbing red hair, waved to the crowd, and the puzzled look in his eyes faded, replaced by realization, 

Bluchaven Base might be loaded, but without gas, nobody was going anywhere. Driving in, he saw the whole city had been stripped bare, including their fuel tanks. 

If they wanted to travel further, fuel was a must. 

He shared a glance with Scarlet, both thinking, “Time to hike up the price on gas. 

The group rolled into Elite District, the smallest part of the base. There were dozens of villas here, each spaced far apart, with wide roads running between them. 

They were shown to the villa that used to belong to the former base chief and Elise. The place was luxuriously furnished, just right for a bunch of powered humans like them. 

The maid had already laid out a delicious spread, and the moment they stepped inside, the mouthwatering smell of food washed over them. 

“Come on in, everyone.” William was grinning from ear to ear, his eyes lighting up at the sight of those two giant fuel tankers. 

Hendrix had hit the nail on the head. Bluehaven Base was in dire need of fuel. 

The Highland Base powered humans arrived in a convoy of eighteen vehicles, but their whole crew numbered just over fifty people. 

Every single one was a powered human, each with their own special abilities. 

Scanning the group, nearly all of them were level–three powered humans, and Hendrix had even broken through to level 4 only a few days back. 

With a lineup this powerful, they could easily establish a major base in the apocalypse. 

As William was inviting everyone to take their seats, he glanced over and saw Molly coming down from upstairs. 

She was a cute little girl, rocking a pink down jacket and a snow–white bunny hat, seriously adorable. 

Every eye from Highland Base locked onto Molly. 

For a kid to pop up at an event this serious, there was no way she wasn’t someone important. 

William quickly waved her over. “Don’t mind her, folks. This is my niece. She’s always up to some mischief. I didn’t expect her to show up here today.” 

Then, putting on a fake scowl, he said to Molly, “Hey, what are you doing here? Go find your mom now.” 

Molly stuck her tongue out at him. “Okay, Uncle William.” 

As they passed each other, William’s eyes suddenly went wide, and his whole body went stiff for a split second. 

Molly just said that Hendrix was a level–four powered human, and the rest were all level–three ones. 

William wondered, ‘How did a force this powerful even come together?

He figured someone of his rank deserved a personal welcome from the base chief himself. 

Scarlet ran her fingers over her bright red nails, her voice both seductive and laced with challenge. 

“Major York, I heard you’ve got someone named Elise here. She’s a space–powered human, and the base chief’s daughter, right? So why hasn’t she come out to say hi?” asked Scarlet. 

As she spoke, she glanced around, sizing up the crowd. 

Hendrix burst out laughing. “Relax, Major York, no need to get all worked up. Scarlet’s a space–powered human too. Why not call Elise over? Let the two of them compare notes or maybe even have a little showdown.” 

William saw right through their act. This so–called “friendly exchange” was just a front. What they really wanted was to poach their space–powered human, or maybe even get rid of her altogether. 

With Chloe backing them up, William felt reassured and spoke up without hesitation. 

“Looks like you all had a long journey and haven’t been keeping up with the news,” he said. 

The group 

looked at each other, a bit confused. “Our car radio’s dead. So, did we miss any news or what?” 

William stood ramrod straight, forcing a smirk. “The former chief was executed for slaughtering civilians. His daughter, Elise, killed her own people and was dealt with on the spot.” 

The room fell silent. 

One could hear a pin drop. 

Everyone stared at William, eyes wide with disbelief, searching his face for any sign he was bluffing. 

Scarlet giggled, her tone teasing. “Major York, you must be kidding.” 

In this messed–up world, might made right. With famine everywhere and zombies running wild, anyone still breathing had blood on their hands. 

That kind of excuse might’ve worked before the apocalypse, but now, no one still cared about the old laws. 

These soldiers seriously thought they could punish someone just for breaking the law. 

What a joke. 

Seriously, Elise was a space–powered human. Let alone kill her, if she were at any other base, they’d be worshipping her like a goddess.
