Chloe’s cold attitude nearly made Sophie drop her noble act. For a second, her face froze, but she quickly put on a hurt expression. “Chloe, what’s wrong?” she asked. 

“Don’t act like that. We’re not close,” Chloe replied flatly. 

In their previous life, they’d only become close after the apocalypse, when they’d fought to survive together. But now, they were practically strangers. 

While they talked, Sophie kept sneaking glances at the emerald bracelet on Chloe’s wrist, quickly looking away every time. 

Chloe’s eyes narrowed. ‘Could Sophie have traveled through time, too?‘ she thought. 

Sophie couldn’t take her eyes off the bracelet. In her dreams, it had always been hers. 

The urge to possess it was overwhelming, and she blurted out, “Chloe, that emerald bracelet is beautiful. Where did you get it? I really like it, and I’m hoping to find one for myself.” 

Chloe lifted her wrist. “You mean this? It’s a family heirloom.” 

Sophie was skeptical. In her dreams, that bracelet was definitely hers. She wanted to speak but stopped herself. 

Just then, Kyler rushed over, winking and making strange gestures at Chloe. 

Chloe acted like she hadn’t noticed, pretending she didn’t understand what he was trying to communicate. 

Kyler couldn’t keep quiet any longer and said, “Chloe, I brought Shawn over. You’d better not mess this up, or don’t blame me if things go south.” 

Chloe shot a cold glance at Shawn, who was hanging back in the crowd, trying to act important. 

As if feeling her gaze, Shawn lifted his chin and straightened his clothes, which were still fairly neat. He was about to speak when Chloe slammed the door shut. 

Everyone had been rejected. Mandy, furious, kicked the steel door hard. “Seriously? We’re all classmates. Couldn’t she show a little compassion?” she muttered, trying to vent her frustration, but then a sharp pain shot through her ankle. 

Deacon, the skinny guy with glasses, said with a smile, “Oh, you’re Chloe’s classmates? We’re neighbors, too. Why not come over to my place for a bit?” 

Still keeping a clear head, Mandy politely shook her head. “Thanks, sir, but we’ve already got a place to stay.” 

Deacon smiled warmly. “Good to hear. By the way, you came here because you heard Chloe’s family has supplies, right?” 

From their earlier conversation, Deacon already knew Chloe’s name. Now, he just needed to figure out who

Shawn stayed quiet on edge, but Mandy jumped in. “So you know Chloe hoarded supplies, too? I can’t believe she’s so heartless. We’re all classmates. Shouldn’t we be helping each other out?” 

“Don’t blame Chloe. No matter how much she’s got, it’s not enough to feed an entire family. Deacon said, his eyes glinting with greed. 

Mandy scoffed, her eyes filled with contempt. “Her? Please. Her whole family’s dead. She’s living alone.” She paused, realizing something. “Wait, you guys are neighbors, aren’t you? How do you not know that?” Before she could say more, Shawn grabbed her and yanked her away. 

Deacon and Bryce exchanged a look, both recognizing the same greedy glint in each other’s eyes. In their minds, the stash in Unit 1803 and the girl living there were already theirs. 

To those two muscleheads, Chloe was just easy prey. It was only a matter of when they made their move. 

But to the rest of the class, Chloe was nothing more than an easy target. They all assumed that if Shawn even lifted a finger, she’d chase after him without hesitation. 

As soon as they took the elevator down, the group was fired up. 

“Shawn, Chloe’s so disrespectful. We need to teach her a lesson. Let’s ignore her for a few days,” someone advised. 

“Yeah, she’s so oblivious. She still thinks everything is fine out there, enjoying peace as if she were a noble princess,” another person added. 

Everyone was talking, but Shawn stayed silent, frowning. He thought Chloe really did seem different. Ever since they’d crossed paths over the holiday, she felt like a stranger. ‘Is she only playing hard to get?‘ he wondered. 

“Did you see that? Chloe was practically all over Shawn just now. No shame at all,” Mandy spat, still furious. 

Her words actually made Shawn feel better about himself, and he couldn’t help but smile in satisfaction. 

Meanwhile, Sophie seemed lost in thought, her mind circling back to the emerald bracelet on Chloe’s wrist. She couldn’t shake the feeling that it should’ve been hers. A sly glint flashed in her eyes. 

As soon as Chloe closed the door, her phone buzzed. It was Sam calling. 

“Hey, sweetheart. Rosalie told me you were bringing something for me. My precious girl, you really do care about your old man. Where are you? You’re not in any danger, right? Stay safe, okay?” Sam said. 

“Oh, Dad, I’m really sorry, but my building is surrounded by zombies. I can’t even get out. The hallway is full of them! It’s so scary. Maybe you could come rescue me?” Chloe said. 

Sam sounded totally pissed off. “What? You haven’t even left yet?”

Chloe smiled brightly, looking absolutely stunning. “What can I do? There are just too many zombies outside. Maybe you could wait a few days? I swear I’ll get the food to you” 

Before she could say more, Sam hung up. The busy signal beeped in her car. 

In another apartment, Vanessa came rushing down the stairs, looking pale and anxious after days of fear. The rest of the family crowded around her. 

Niko yelled, “Tell that bitch to bring me some food. I’m starving. I want dried chicken and drinks.” 

Kiera quickly picked him up, looking worried. “Oh, sweetheart, stop yelling. You’ll attract all the zombies outside.” 

Rosalie rushed over. “Dad, what did Chloe say? Where is she? When is she coming?” She was dying of thirst. She could handle not eating, but not drinking water was killing her. 

Sam angrily shrugged her hand off, his face dark with rage. “Coming? That brat is just fooling us!” 

‘What?‘ Rosalie thought, her face pale, stumbling back. “No way. Chloe promised she’d bring us food. Why isn’t she here? I’m dying of thirst!” 

She grabbed Sam’s hand, tears welling up in her eyes. “Dad, Niko is just a kid, and you’re the only man left. What about you-” 

Sam glared at her fiercely. “What? You want me to go out there and risk my life?” 

Rosalie flinched and buried herself in Vanessa’s arms, whimpering with fear. 

“Sam, if she’s not coming, what are we supposed to do now?” Vanessa said. “Rosalie and I can handle it, but the real problem is Niko. He’s still a kid and the only boy left in the Stimson family.” 

Sam looked at his chubby son. For a moment, his expression softened. As if he had made up his mind, he said, “Stay out at home. I’m going out.”
