Emily’s voice shook, and she suddenly let out a loud yelp, wincing hard. 

“Mindy, why are you pinching me?” Emily complained. 

Mindy gave her an innocent look. “It hurts, right? Guess this really isn’t a dream.” 

“Dreaming? You wish. Why don’t you pinch your own leg instead?” Emily retorted. 

Mindy pouted, her eyes still watery, and murmured, “But I don’t want it to hurt.” 

Everyone burst out laughing. 

Chloe just shook her head. “Do you remember I got scratched by a zombie once?” 

Emily instantly flashed back to that fight with the zombies. 

She’d always figured Chloe had some kind of healing power, so that was why she didn’t get infected. 

“Wait, you actually used this stuff?” Emily blurted out, her eyes wide. 

Chloe shook her head and then nodded. “I used the mutant flower, and this is just a purified extract from it. Trust me. It’s safe to take.” 

Emily stared at the little glass bottle on the table like it was the holy grail, gulping nervously. 

She snuck a look at her teammates. Their eyes were practically blazing with desire, but nobody dared make a 

move. 

They all knew that if this thing was legit, it would fetch a price beyond their wildest dreams. 

If it ever went up for auction, the numbers would be insane. Emily couldn’t even wrap her head around it. 

It wasn’t that her teammates doubted its power. They just didn’t have the heart to actually use it. 

‘We’re not even worthy, everyone thought, feeling both excited and a little self–deprecating. 

“What’s with those faces? Don’t trust me, huh? Well, if that’s the case…” Chloe teased, making a show of putting the bottle away. 

“I want it.” Everyone lunged forward, almost starting a brawl over it. 

That night, everyone holed up in their rooms, nerves jangling and hearts brimming with anticipation, as they each downed that precious drop of immunity liquid.

The next day, Chloe got an invite to the office villa. It was time for her to officially meet the folks from the Highland Base. 

She’d barely reached the door when the sound of a heated argument hit her ears. Listening in, she realized the powered humans from the Highland Base were trying to hike up the price of gasoline. 

Graham and his crew weren’t about to agree. 

Hendrix lounged on the sofa, sipping his coffee like he had all the time in the world. 

“Graham, one liter of gasoline for ten pounds of grain. That’s a fair deal,” Hendrix said, totally unfazed. 

William’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. “Are you out of your mind? Do you even know how valuable food is these days? A single pack of pasta could cost someone their life. 

“Even before the apocalypse, you couldn’t get that much food for a liter of gas.” 

Scarlet gave a coquettish little laugh. “Come on. That’s not how it works. Sure, supplies are precious, but so is gasoline. Do you have any idea how many bases around the world are dying to trade with us for gas?” 

They were acting all high and mighty. Just because their squad had a level–four powered human, they looked down on everyone else like they owned the place. 

Chloe’s clear, crisp voice rang out from outside. 

“But have you ever thought about it? People might scrape by without gasoline, but without food, they’re dead meat,” Chloe said coolly. 

When Chloe showed up, Graham wasted no time introducing her to the group. 

“This is Chloe, our base’s deputy chief,” he announced. 

Hendrix’s hand paused mid–sip, coffee cup hovering in the air. 

His eyes flashed with genuine awe at her looks, but when he caught her rank, a hint of disappointment crept

‘She’s actually the deputy chief? Guess taking her with me isn’t going to be easy after all,‘ Hendrix thought. 

Chloe and Scarlet were both stunning, each beautiful in her own way. 

Chloe had an icy, ethereal grace, like a snow lotus blooming on a mountaintop, proud and untouchable. Scarlet was the embodiment of temptation, her sultry allure impossible to resist. 

They were opposites in every way. One was an untouchable dream, while the other was a haunting obsession. 

The moment Scarlet laid eyes on Chloe, her gaze narrowed. She instantly sensed Hendrix’s reaction shift, and warning bells went off in her mind.

gave a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “So you’re the deputy chief? You look barely seventeen or eighteen. Pretty impressive for someone so young.”

The man stood up from the sofa and bowed politely to Chloe. 

“Miss Yates, looks like fare brought us together again,” Dustin said. 

“Wow, you made it to level three already? Not bad, Chloe said, nodding with approval. 

Dustin scratched his head, looking a bit sheepish. “Honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am now if it weren’t for you, Min Yates. You really gave me a shot.” 

Back when Chloe took down that mutant spider and left the building, she left behind a bunch of half–dead 

mutant creatures. 

Dustin basically lucked out. He swooped in and took advantage of the mess, and that was how he managed to rise above the rest of the refugees. 

The moment Dustin saw Chloe, he knew right away this negotiation was never going to be as simple as Hendrix made it out to be. 

Sure enough, Chloe sat down on the sofa across from them, casually picked up a cup of coffee, and started sipping it slowly, totally at ease. 

Then Chloe said, “The whole world’s been tainted by the zombie virus. Food is a non–renewable resource now. It’s incredibly scarce and valuable. There’s absolutely no way we can accept the terms you just offered.” 

Hendrix’s eyes flashed with a calculating glint. 

“Captain Yates, I have to disagree, Gasoline’s a non–renewable resource too, so why shouldn’t it trade for the same as food?” he retorted. 

One of his teammates chimed in, “That’s right. We passed by several bases on our way here, and every single one was desperate to swap for our gasoline. 

“If our base chief hadn’t made arrangements with you guys ahead of time, all that gas would’ve been traded away long ago.

Chloe chuckled and shook her head. “So, which base is actually willing to trade ten pounds of grain for a single liter of your gasoline? Why aren’t you over there making the deal?” 

William caught Chloe’s look and instantly got the message. With a mischievous grin, he turned to Hendrix. “Come on. Which base is it? Care to spill? We’ve got some gas at our place too. Maybe we’ll swing by and score some deals ourselves.” 

That left the folks from the Highland Base totally speechless. 

They’d been banking on their strength and the gas shortage to jack up the price, but they never expected Chloe and her crew to just shut them down. 

“So, what do you think is a fair trade?” Hendrix finally asked, trying to steer the conversation back on track. 

Everyone turned to Chloe. She was the strongest here, so naturally, everyone waited for her to make the call. 

Chloe raised a single finger. “One liter of gasoline for one pound of grain. That’s as far as we’ll go.” 

Graham nearly choked on his coffee. ‘Damn, Captain Yates really is ruthless when it comes to bargaining, he thought. 

He’d only ever considered offering three pounds for a liter but he never actually had the nerve to say it out loud. 

“What?” Hendrix snapped, voice sharp and unyielding. “No way.” 

Food was more valuable now, but it was just the start of the apocalypse. With ninety–five percent of people wiped out or turned into zombies, anyone with some real power could still scavenge for supplies.
