Chapter 227 

After his wound was bandaged, Bell stood up and looked into the depths of the dense forest. “Yeah, no one knows what’s going on here. 

“I heard mutant plants are everywhere. Several teams tried to go in before, but none of them ever came back. 

“Even those two powerful third–level monsters don’t dare to get close. There must be something terrifying inside. We’d better not go in.” 

As soon as he finished speaking, the monsters outside started getting restless. They wanted in but hesitated, unwilling to leave empty–handed. 

In the end, not wanting to let their meal slip away, they let out a furious roar and rushed straight for the forest. 

“Crap! Run!” the four of them yelled together, panic flashing in their eyes. 

Now, with their lives on the line, they had no choice but to bolt deeper into the woods. 

Without the car, they could only run on foot, and they weren’t exactly fast. Luckily, the jungle was a tangled mess, with roots and ivies everywhere, making it hard for the two massive monsters to move quickly. 

Stumbling and tripping, the monsters still couldn’t catch those pesky humans. 

Finally, they reached a spot where the plants were even thicker. The monsters didn’t dare to go any further. They could only watch the humans get farther and farther away, drooling with hunger, before turning and leaving. 

“Bell, check it out! Those third–level monsters are finally leaving!” someone exclaimed. 

Bell was the strongest powered human in their group. He was at the third level and could feel in his gut that something dangerous was lurking nearby. “Stay sharp, everyone. We need to find another way out, and fast.” 

By the time they finished talking, they’d already made it to a road cutting through the jungle. 

“That’s weird. Mutant plants are everywhere, but the road is totally clean, like someone’s been coming through and clearing it out,” he murmured. 

‘But seriously, how could that be?‘ Bell thought to himself. 

Just then, Caspian spotted a sign up ahead and dashed over, all excited. “Guys, come check this out! What is it?” 

About 300 feet away, there was a big red sign with a flame symbol on it, waving in the wind. The flames seemed to be pointing deeper into the jungle, almost like it was showing them the way. 

“Bell, look! There are flags with flame symbols every 1,500 feet, and all the flames are pointing the same way. Are they trying to show us something?” he said. 

Caspian might’ve been the weakest of the group, but he was smart as hell. His gut instincts had gotten them out of trouble 

more than once. 

Everyone looked up when he said that, and sure enough, there was another flag about 1,500 feet away, identical to the others. 

“Bell, it’s true! There are flags not just ahead, but behind us tool” he added. 

Bell ran his fingers over the flag, thinking hard. “Maybe they’re meant to show us the way?”

The guy behind him kept glancing around, fear written all over his face. “Bell, why does this place feel so weird to me? Let’s get out of here before something bad happens.” 

Another powered human nodded. “It’s almost evening now. I have a feeling things get a lot worse after dark.” 

Bell nodded, agreeing. “Maybe these flags have been here since before the apocalypse?” 

Caspian squinted at the flag and shook his head. “No way, these are definitely new. 

“If they’d been here since before the apocalypse, after all those blizzards and hailstorms, there’s no way they’d still look this perfect.” 

He glanced around. “Check it out, yeah, the plants are thick, but you can still see a bunch of broken walls and rubble on the ground. You can tell all these plants just started growing recently.” 

Everyone looked around and realized he was right. 

Everyone shivered, their voices shaking as they spoke. 

“We should get out of here. What if we run into something creepy?” a man said. 

“Seriously? You’re a modern guy, and you still buy into all that supernatural nonsense?” Bell said, but he was still scanning the area, just in case. 

Caspian gave a bitter laugh. “The apocalypse is here. We’ve got zombies, mutant plants, and even the plants are out to get us now. Seriously, what’s impossible anymore?” 

At that, everyone exchanged a look, and without another word, they sprinted back the way they came. The last thing they expected was that those two long–legged monsters were still lying there on the road; they hadn’t left at all. 

As soon as the monsters spotted the four of them, they scrambled to their feet and started roaring. 

The group turned white as a sheet and took off running for their lives. 

The monsters chasing them had legs so long they could outrun a speeding car, and they were so massive they loomed over the tallest trees, forced to hunch down just to fit through the forest as they hunted their prey. 

Even so, there was no way any human could ever hope to outrun them. 

They barely made it 300 feet before both monsters slammed their claws down, trapping all four of them beneath. 

Despair washed over their faces. 

‘We’re done for, they thought. 

Just like a cat messing with a mouse, the monsters kept tossing them into the air and snatching them back, playing with them until they were totally out of it. 

Only when the humans were completely dazed did the monsters finally open their massive jaws, looking like they were about to dig in for dinner. 

Bell saw the monster’s huge mouth just inches from his face, its nasty breath blasting him head–on. He was so terrified he almost pissed himself. 

Just then, a chorus of high–pitched squeaks erupted from the side. Suddenly, a dozen or so red–eyed rats, each half as tall as a grown man, came scurrying out.

They swarmed in from all directions, surrounding the two monsters and squeaking nonstop.

The two monsters‘ faces twisted in fear. They tried to bluff, growling at the red–eyed rats, but it was clear they were just acting tough. 

But the rats didn’t flinch. Instead, they bared their razor–sharp teeth, ready to pounce. Those fangs looked like the sharpest weapons one could imagine. 

As soon as the red–eyed rats spotted the monsters, drool dripped from their mouths. They looked hungry for flesh 

The two monsters didn’t even bother with their human prey anymore, and they hightailed it out of there, desperate to 

escape. 

The powered humans made a break for it. The rats barely spared them a glance. The real feast was those two hulking 

monsters. 

The dozen or so mutant rats could run just as fast as those monsters, tearing through the jungle like a pack of demons 

Bell and the crew bolted while they had the chance, but their escape route was completely cut off. All they could do now was keep heading further down the road. 

“B–Bell, there’s gotta be something way worse waiting for us in there,” one of them stammered. 

“Doesn’t matter right now. We just need to survive!” Bell shot back. 

They stumbled and tripped their way through, running into all sorts of mutant plants blocking the path. Luckily, none of them were high–level. 

Suddenly, all four of them froze in their tracks, terror written all over their faces as they stared at the massive stone gate looming ahead. 

The ancient stone gate was covered in thick green moss, with creepy bugs crawling everywhere, and it sent shivers down their spines just looking at it. 

“What kind of ancient city is this?” Caspian stammered, his voice shaking with fear. 

Caspian mumbled under his breath, digging out his map in a hurry, his brow furrowed tight. 

“This can’t be right! The map says this place is supposed to be a brand–new tourist spot, right next to the Botanic Gardens How is this even possible?” 

“Did we get lost or what?” 

Everyone hesitated, none of them daring to take another step forward. 

This place really did look like an abandoned city, old, creepy, and straight out of a nightmare. 

Everyone’s legs were shaking, and one of the guys, a chubby dude named Orion, looked like he was about to piss himself 

from fear.
