Chapter 232 

Chloe picked up a piece and took a small bite. Her eyes lit up instantly. 

“This is delicious,” she said. 

Emily and Frank, hearing Chloe, each broke off a piece and tasted it. “Mmm, this is really tasty!” one said. 

“That’s weird, I feel so much lighter after just one bite,” the other one said. 

Bell grinned and explained, “Tristan’s got a support–type power. Thanks to him, this bread actually has some healing effects.” 

Everyone looked at each other, clearly stunned. 

‘Man, our base really lucked out with Tristan,‘ they all thought. 

Chloe smiled knowingly. “That’s great. We’re heading out soon, so I want you to make as many as you can in a week. Til double your points.” 

Bell’s grin grew even wider. “Got it, Chief! Promise I won’t let you down.” 

As Bell walked away, he was practically floating on air, his excitement making him feel like he was walking on clouds. 

He usually got 300 points a day from the base, which was plenty to get by and live well, since the supermarket prices were pretty low. 

Now that his points were doubling, he could really live it up. ‘Maybe I could even find myself a wife, he thought. 

The more he thought about it, the happier he got, and his steps quickened. 

He couldn’t wait to tell the guys about this. 

After Bell left, Emily looked at Chloe, puzzled. “Chief, where are we going?” 

Chloe just facepalmed. 

“Didn’t you even read the note I just gave you?” she asked. 

Frank and Mindy both leaned in to check out the notice they were holding. 

Frank, especially, started rubbing his hands together in excitement as he read the contents. 

“Is this for real? Ebony Base just sent out a notice to all the bases. There’s a seriously powerful mutated beast showing up in Lakeside, and they’re inviting everyone to go hunt it down,” Frank said/ 

Having powers was like rowing upstream. If they didn’t keep improving themselves, they’d get swept back. Everyone was pretty satisfied with their current life and honestly, they’d love to just stay comfortable. 

But in a world this dangerous, getting too comfortable was basically asking for trouble. 

That was the biggest reason why powered humans were always heading out on hunts. 

One, to grab supplies. Two, to get stronger. 

And the best way to get stronger was to keep fighting. 

It had been ages since they’d actually gone out and fought for real.

Chapter 232 

“Word is, there’s some kind of treasure buried underground in Lakeside. Everything there, plants or animals, has mutated. and they’re all super high–level,” Chloe said. 

At that, everyone fell silent, just staring at each other. 

It was obvious they were all thinking the same thing, Botanic Gardens.

With that massive energy source unde all the plants there had mutated. Powered humans didn’t even need to fight. 

Just soaking up that energy would make their power skyrocket to unprecedented heights. 

Frank rubbed his stubble. It was a habit he always had when he was thinking. 

“I’m thinking there’s some kind of energy under Lakeside that’s way more powerful than what’s in Botanic Gardens,” he said. 

Mindy nodded in agreement. “Yeah, I heard the mutated creatures there are all super high–level. After the earthquake and tsunami, all kinds of monsters started popping up from underground.” 

Chloe racked her brain, trying to remember everything she knew about Lakeside from her previous life. 

It suddenly hit her that almost all the top–ranked mutated beasts back then had come from Lakeside. 

“Looks like Ebony Base can’t handle such a huge haul on their own, so they’re calling in powered humans from all the other bases,” Chloe said. 

“When are we heading out?” Frank asked. 

“Let’s wait for the Bluehaven crew and head out together,” Chloe replied. 

Back before the apocalypse, it would’ve only taken a few hours to get from Bluehaven Base to Grovenwich. 

But these days, with all the dangers out there, it’d take at least two weeks, if not more. 

“Let’s take advantage of these two weeks to get ready. In a few days, I’ll announce who’s on the team for Lakeside,” Chloe said. 

“Sure,” others replied. 

After that, Frank jumped right in, modifying the Base Truck and working on boosting his level. 

He was already a fifth–level powered human. He’d be a top dog at any base. 

Only Chloe was stronger than him. 

After Frank’s upgrades, the Base Truck could fend off most attacks from mutated beasts. 

It was absolutely secure against anything below Level 3. Even if they ran into a swarm of Level–3 or Level–4 beasts, the damage would be barely noticeable. 

If they ever faced a Level–5, at least the Base Truck could hold out for a while. 

Chloe quickly finished the list. 

“This trip to Lakeside is going to be extremely dangerous, so I’ve decided the team will only have six people,” she announced. 

Others thought, ‘What? 

‘So she’ll only take five people?‘

Frank and the others exchanged glances, completely at a loss. 

“Frank,” Chloe called out. 

He was always the first to charge in, with tank–like defense. He could take a beating and hit back just as hard. He specialized in close–quarters combat, and was already a fifth–level powered human. 

“Emily,” Chloe continued. 

She was at the peak of Level 4 now. Her spirit–powered attacks were scary as hell, and her hearing was so sharp that the could catch sounds from far away. 

“Mindy,” Chloe said. 

She was at the same level as Emily, peak Level 4, but her attacks packed way more punch and hit a much wider area. Fring a fight, her flames mutated, and now they burn way hotter than any other fire–powered human at her level 

“Renee,” Chloe said. 

She was just at the start of Level 4, but her spatial seal was seriously powerful. In battle, she could suppress an enemy’s abilities by at least thirty percent. 

For powered humans below Level 4, she could totally lock down their powers, making them completely useless. 

Even Chloe would find her own strength cut by ten percent when facing Renee. 

When real masters face off, the slightest difference could mean disaster. Lose even a bit of your strength, and you could lose your head in an instant. 

“Evan,” Chloe called. 

This was the guy who always put his wife first, but in a fight, he was a late–stage fourth–level powerhouse. He was all about brute strength, kind of like Frank. 

He seemed easygoing, always joking around, but when it came to battle, he fought like he got nothing to lose, every punch landing with bone–crushing force. He could smash a boulder to pieces with a single blow. 

Chloe had actually considered bringing Molly along at first. After all, her sensing ability could warn them about danger before it even showed up. 

But then she thought about it. Lakeside was packed with threats. If a real fight broke out, there’d be nowhere to hide and nobody could spare a hand to save her. 

Plus, they already had a spirit–powered human on the team, so for now, it made sense to leave Molly out. 

“Anyone got anything to add?” Chloe asked. 

The ones who’d been picked were already rubbing their hands together, itching to get going. 

There were a hundred or so people there, but most of them were just happy to stay put and didn’t dare go out. They were content to just do some work at the base and earn their points. 

Some of the powered humans, like Clayton, Molly, and Filip, all looked pretty downcast. 

Suddenly, Chiara stepped forward. “Chloe, I want to go, too.” 

Filip saw his sister step up and hurried forward. “Count me in. I want to go, too.” 

Then Clayton, Molly, and Joan all stepped forward as well.
