Chapter 237Â
At William’s command, everyone started packing up, slinging their backpacks over their shoulders.Â
William had made it clear: even with a space–powered human in the team, everyone still had to carry their own supplies and weapons, just in case they got separated from the main group.Â
Soon, everyone had everything packed up and jumped into the trucks.Â
The Blaze Squad members also got in, bringing up the rear of the convoy.Â
Their battered Base Truck was trailing at the very end, looking totally unremarkableÂ
Along the way, they ran into plenty of other groups heading for Lakeside. Every time they crossed paths, everyone watched each other warily, not a single word exchanged.Â
Thankfully, thanks to all the powered humans who’d already come through here, most of the dangers had been taken care of, so there hadn’t been any big fights.Â
After a few days, the convoy finally rolled into Riverside.Â
“What’s going on up ahead?” Frank asked.Â
Frank pulled over and got out, with Chloe right behind him.Â
A man in a military uniform hurried over and saluted Chloe.Â
“Captain Yates, our captain is asking for you,” he said.Â
Chloe nodded and walked forward, only to see that the open area ahead was now jammed with people, all shouting. It looked like some kind of argument was breaking out.Â
William looked anxious and rushed over as soon as he spotted Chloe.Â
“Captain Yates,” William called out.Â
“What’s going on up ahead?” Chloe asked.Â
William sighed. “The road ahead has collapsed and caved in. Looks like we can’t go that way anymore. We’ll need to take a detour.”Â
But everyone knew this was the quickest way to Lakeside.Â
If they had to change course, they’d have to cut through Riverside, which would mean three extra days on the road, and the danger level would shoot up.Â
That was definitely not good news.Â
Riverside was a ghost town, swarming with mutated creatures. Half a year was enough for things to get really bad. Nobody had any idea what kind of threats might be waiting inside.Â
That was why everyone was stuck here; nobody wanted to risk the detour.Â
“I’ve already sent scouts ahead to ask around and see what the other groups have heard,” William said.Â
Then they kept quiet, waiting for word from the scouts.Â
Emily walked over, worry written all over her face.Â

Chapter 237Â
“Emily, what did you find out?” Frank asked, and everyone from Bluehaven Base turned to stare at her.Â
“Chief, looks like there’s no way around it. We’re gonna have to take the detour,” Emily said.Â
Everyone stayed silent, eyes fixed on her, waiting for her to go on.Â
“The collapse up ahead is really bad. It goes on for several miles. There’s absolutely no way through, so we might as well take the long way,” Emily explained.Â
Before Chloe or anyone else could say a word, someone nearby let out a mocking laugh.Â
“Tsk, what do you know, chick? Even the elite powered humans up ahead wouldn’t dare say that. Don’t talk big when you don’t know shit,” the man sneered.Â
A big, burly guy shot Emily a sneer. He was wearing shorts and a tank top, his muscles bulging so much that his clothes looked ready to rip apart.Â
He had a hot girl on each arm, greasily smooching their faces. A pack of musclebound thugs followed behind him, and it was clear they were in trouble.Â
Others could smell the stench of sweat coming off them from a mile away.Â
But it wasn’t just those guys. With the heat pushing over 104°F, everyone reeked of sweat. The mix of all that funk was basically an open invitation for mosquitoes to swarm in and feast.Â
Emily was about to say something, but then she remembered their mission and kept quiet, refusing to engage.Â
Her lack of response only fueled the guy’s arrogance, making him even more relentless.Â
“Man, anyone can wander out here now. With those skinny arms and legs, you’d get snapped like a twig if you tried to fight,” he jeered.Â
He whistled at Emily. “My boys still don’t have any women. Why not tag along with us? Maybe we’ll let you stick around for a while…Â
Before he could finish, Emily planted her hands on her hips and spat right at him.Â
“Your body looks like it can handle it. Why don’t you let your buddies have their fun with you?” she shot back.Â
Then, she covered her mouth in mock shock, her eyes darting around. “Oh my god, don’t tell me you guys have already tried that.”Â
That was humiliating.Â
The guy was totally stunned. He never expected Emily to clap back at him like that. Even the two girls beside him looked tense and uneasy.Â
They were practically wishing they could disappear, hoping nobody would notice them.Â
After a moment, the guy suddenly shouted, his voice booming across the crowd.Â
“Bitch, how dare you!” he yelled.Â
He lunged at Emily, ready to take a swing.Â
The dozen or so powered humans behind him all stood up in unison, fixing Emily with hostile, menacing stares.Â
Chloe saw the commotion and headed over to join the group.Â

Chapter 237Â
When the big guys caught sight of Chloe and Mindy, their eyes were glued to them. The women at their sides suddenly lost all appeal.Â
They shot Chloe and Mindy a shameless, lewd grin.Â
“Hey, hey, hey, where did these babes come from? Damn, you two are real lookers. You heading to Lakeside, too? one of them jeered.Â
Chloe ignored him and turned to Emily.Â
“You okay?” she asked.Â
Emily nodded. “I’m fine. Just ran into some loser. Seriously, I can’t even.”Â
Seeing Emily was alright, Chloe and the others didn’t bother with the arrogant guy. They just drove around him and headed out on the detour.Â
By now, tons of vehicles were all heading toward the Riverside city area. It seemed like they were all taking the detour.Â
Clearly, they got the word, too. There was just no way through up ahead.Â
Behind them, the guy was still cursing and shouting, “Hey, bitch, stop right there!”Â
He kept ranting like a mad dog, but they were already gone, not even giving him the time of day.Â
Furious, he kicked the driver next to him. “What the hell are you standing there for? Go after them!”Â
He spat hard on the ground.Â
“Bitch, you better hope I don’t catch up to you, or I’ll fuck you up,” he snarled.Â
He was used to acting like a big shot back at his own base, and talking trash was just his thing. His loud mouth had already gotten on everyone’s nerves.Â
But everyone knew the real reason they were out here, so nobody wanted to make waves.Â
Revealing their cards blindly would only give others a chance to spot their weak points.Â
Even Chloe kept her distance and didn’t pick a fight.Â
But with the crowd so thick, that guy’s ride got stuck in bumper–to–bumper traffic, and he was so furious.Â
He leaned out the window, cursing at everyone around.Â
“Are you all fucking blind? Can’t you see I’m chasing someone?” he shouted.Â
He started hitting the horn, blasting it nonstop.Â
Mutated beasts started roaring nearby, drawn in by the blaring horns. The number of howling monsters kept gathering. their cries getting louder and more menacing.Â
Or maybe it was just because there were so many people crammed together. The air was thick with human scent and sweat.Â
That was enough to attract a swarm of giant bloodsucking mosquitoes. Each bug was as big as a thumb, forming a dark cloud that swooped in from the distance, making everyone’s scalp tingle.Â
“Hey, look! What’s that over there?” someone called out, his voice shaky with fear.Â
Everyone’s gaze snapped to the distance, staring at the approaching swarm.Â
