Chapter 238Â
A mass of dark shapes came flying in from the direction of Lakeside. When everyone squinted for a closer look, they realized with shock that they were thumb–sized mutant mosquitoes.Â
Mosquitoes were already bloodsuckers, spreading viruses through their bites. Now, after mutating, even the smallest ones were as big as a thumb, and there were swarms of them, darkening the sky.Â
Even the most seasoned powered humans had neverÂ
“Run!” someone shouted.Â
Witnessed anything like this. The sight made their skin crawl.Â
No one knew who yelled first, but panic spread instantly through the crowd like a pot boiling over. Everyone rushed toÂ
escape.Â
The mutant mosquitoes zipped through the air much faster now, but the powered humans weren’t slow either.Â

The mutant mosquitoes wrapped around the crowd like a suffocating shroud, hiding everything inside. No one could see what was happening. Only the hair–raising screams echoed out, making everyone’s skin crawl.Â
Some people with sharp eyes, standing close enough, caught a glimpse beneath the black cloud–just shriveled husks, sucked dry by the mutant mosquitoes.Â
Anyone who saw this scene was so scared that their legs went weak, forgetting to even run for their lives. In the blink of an eye, they were instantly lost in the swarm of mutant mosquitoes.Â
The powerful ones could still put up a fight, but for most people, all they could do was become mosquito food.Â
Chloe and her crew had just left the crowd when they heard the chaos erupting behind them.Â
Emily’s face went pale as she shouted at Frank,Â
”Â
Now!”Â
They’d fought together so many times that they didn’t eÂ

The mutant mosquitoes would never have caught up to them, but their escape was blocked by a bunch of cars that showed up behind, jamming the road.Â
The newcomers, clueless about what was happening, hoppedÂ

A big, burly guy leaned out, flicked his cigarette away, and scowled, clearly annoyed. “Hey! What’s going on up front? Why are you all backing up?”Â
No one bothered to answer. Instead, someone started cursing them out, “Get the hell out of here, or I’ll mess you up!”Â
Things were fine until someone opened their mouth. Then all hell broke loose. More and more cars started piling up from behind. The smart ones saw trouble brewing and hit the gas, getting out before things got ugly.Â
Most people just stood around, watching the mess unfold. They didn’t leave, but they weren’t making trouble either.Â
In the end, the whole road was gridlocked.Â
Chloe’s ride could’ve cruised right out of there, but now they were trapped in the traffic jam, stuck just like everyone else.Â
In the apocalypse, everyone’s first instinct when danger hit was to run for their lives. If only they’d banded together from theÂ

start, they wouldn’t have been so helpless right now.Â
William’s voice crackled through the walkie–talkic, urgent. “Captain Yates, how’s it going on your end?”Â
Chloe let out a wry smile. “We’re stuck in traffic. There’s no way throughÂ
“Looks like we have to fight now. We’ve got a few fire–powered humans here. Need some backup?” William asked.Â
William knew Chloe and her crew were tough, but when it came to a fight, using the right counterattacks was the key to victoryÂ
Chloe replied, “Thanks, but we’ve got a fire–powered human in our team, too.”Â
The call suddenly dropped, and a lot of shouting and noise came through the walkie–talkie. It sounded like they were getting attacked by the mutant mosquitoes.Â
All around, horns blared in frustration, and people started cursing up a storm.Â
The noise started out nervous and uneasy, but soon turned into panicked screams and desperate cries for help.Â
But with chaos everywhere, everyone was just trying to survive. No one had the strength left to help anyone else.Â
The Blaze Squad got blocked in by the newcomers, totally stuck with no way forward or back. With nowhere to run, they just holed up inside their vehicles, not daring to step outside.Â
Frank had beefed up the Base Truck, making it nearly indestructible. The mutant mosquitoes‘ sharp proboscises couldn’t even pierce the tough armor plating.Â
Up above, all sorts of powers from the powered humans tangled together, sending waves of energy crashing down from the sky,Â
By now, everyone realized just how overwhelming the situation was. The mutant mosquitoes numbered in the hundreds of billions, a dark mass blotting out the sky.Â
They quickly figured out that relying on their powers alone was pointless. The more they killed, the more mosquitoes showed up, like an endless tide.Â
If this kept up, everyone would run out of energy sooner or later, and their only fate would be ending up as shriveledÂ
corpses.Â
Suddenly, someone caught a glimpse of a car completely swarmed by mutant mosquitoes, but the mosquitoes couldn’t get inside.Â
That was when it hit them that these mosquitoes had mutated, but they hadn’t evolved any further. They just weren’t strong enough to pierce anything solid.Â
While everyone else was busy fighting off the mutant mosquitoes, a few people decisively jumped into their cars and sealed all the windows and doors tight.Â
Sure enough, the mutant mosquitoes swarmed the vehicles, but no matter how hard they jabbed at the windows and doors with their sharp proboscises, they couldn’t break through.Â
They just buzzed around outside, frustrated and helpless.Â
Once someone figured it out, everyone else jumped on the bandwagon.Â
Humans were quick on the uptake. When they saw it worked, they all started doing the same thing.Â
In no time, everyone rushed into their cars, slammed the doors shut, and locked them tight.Â
