Chapter 239Â
Chapter 239Â
“So, what’s really going on out there?” Chiara asked.Â
Ever since she awakened as a powered human, Chiara had been dying for a fight every day. But stuck at the base, all she did was chores.Â
Even when she got to go outside, the adults always got in her way and blocked her from taking any action.Â
‘Seriously, I just want a real fight for once. Why is it so impossible?‘ Chiara grumbled to herself, feeling frustrated.Â
Chiara’s question was exactly what everyone else wanted to know, so all eyes turned to Emily.Â
Emily paused for a moment, and then said, “It’s a total disaster. You wouldn’t even want to see it.”Â
Everyone fell silent, and even Chiara stopped her usual antics.Â
“Don’t tell me… that there’s nothing left but bones out there?” Chiara asked.Â
Even though Chiara was a little war freak, she still didn’t want too many people to die.Â
“No, not really,” Emily replied.Â
Chiara was about to relax, but then Emily continued, “They’re all dried up like mummies.”Â
A chorus of gasps rippled through the room.Â
“M–Mummies?” Chiara stammered, her voice trembling.Â
“You’ll see for yourselves when you go outside,” Emily said, still looking shaken.Â
About, those blood–drained mummies, and the susÂ
who barely escaped, Emily felt complicated.Â
Finally, after half an hour, the swarm of mutant bugs cleared out, and people began to emerge from their vehicles, one byÂ
one.Â
Soon, the air was filled with the sound of people crying. Some wept for lost loved ones, some for fallen comrades, and others for the bleak future ahead.Â
The apocalypse was merciless. Everyone was just barely scraping by, clinging to life.Â
“Come on, open your eyes! How are we supposed to survive this?” someone wailed.Â
“Mom, Mom, where are you?” another voice cried out.Â
“Honey, why is my life so hard? Without you, how are our child and I supposed to survive?” a woman wailed.Â
The whole place was filled with the sound of people sobbing, as if none of them had ever abandoned their own family outside or refused to open the doors when things got dangerous.Â
William knocked on the door of the Base Truck, and Chloe stepped out.Â
“Captain Yates, are you guys alright?” William asked.Â
He looked the Base Truck up and down, still trying toÂ
Tap his head around it.Â
He thought, ‘Man, this old truck looks like it should’ve fallen apart ages ago, but after that mutant bug swarm, it’s still spotless. Not even a scratch.Â

Chapter 239Â
For comparison, even their military pickups had been battered, covered in dents and craters from the attack.Â
Chloe gave a small nod. “We’re good. How about you guys?”Â
William forced a pale smile, looking totally wiped out as he glanced at the blood–drained mummies scattered around.Â
“We stayed put in the pickups the whole time, never stepped out, so nothing got to us,” he replied.Â
Any dents on the trucks were barely worth mentioning.Â
Just as Chloe was about to speak, an arrogant voice suddenly blasted from behind.Â
“Why the hell aren’t you running now?” the guy yelled, full of swagger and attitude.Â
A thug with a rough, beefy face jumped out of his car, gripping a fire axe and swaggering over like he was king of the world.Â
Emily spotted him instantly. It was the same jerk they’d tangled with earlier.Â
He swaggered over, fire axe slung over his shoulder, shooting Emily a cocky, challenging look. “Hey, bitch, where are you running, huh?”Â
Then he turned his sleazy gaze to Chloe, about to mouth off something nasty, but Frank stepped in, blocking the girls behind him.Â
“What the hell do you want, punk?” Frank growled, his voice low and dangerous.Â
Frank stood out even among the tall guys. He was big, burly, and downright intimidating. One look and others knew he was the kind of guy nobody wanted to mess with.Â
As Frank strode over, William rose to his feet, and his squad of soldiers closed in around the thug and his gang, boxing them in.Â
The thug froze, totally caught off guard. He never expected Chloe to have that much backup, and his bravado vanished in a flash.Â
“Wait, let’s just talk, alright? It was only a joke. Don’t take it so seriously,” he stammered, trying to laugh it off.Â
But Frank wasn’t letting it slide. “Don’t take it seriously? Who were you mouthing off to just now?”Â
“No, sir, I wasn’t talking about you guys. I meant them, yeah, that’s right, them,” the thug stammered, scrambling to coverÂ
himself.Â
He made a big show of it, pointing at the cars already pulling away and shouting, “Hey, I’m talking to you guys! Don’t leave!Â
“See? Really, I meant them, sir,” he said, forcing a nervous, awkward laugh.Â
“Oh, really? But you just freaked out our captain. So, what are you gonna do to make it right?” Frank shot back, his voice cold and challenging.Â
The thug’s eyes went wide in shock, staring at Chloe like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He opened his mouth, but it took him ages to find his voice.Â
“What did you just say? She’s your captain?” he blurted out, dumbfounded. He thought, ‘Seriously? Is this some kind of joke?Â
A petite girl like her is actually the captain of a team?‘ It was not that he didn’t believe it, but to guys like them, tough women were always big and burly. Only those types could really throw down.Â
Besides, in the apocalypse, most women didn’t have any real power and had to rely on men to survive. Strength was everything now. Gender equality was long gone.Â
Chapter 239Â
Seeing Chloe surrounded by all those protectors, the thug couldn’t believe she was actually the captain. In his eyes, she was just the pretty girl the real boss kept close, not someone in charge.Â
His face was plastered with a fawning, ingratiating smile the whole time.Â
“You guys got it all wrong. I swear, I wasn’t talking about you,” he stammered, trying to sound as harmless as possible.Â
Frank shot him a look of pure contempt and spat on the ground. “Doesn’t matter. You freaked out our captain, so you’re gonna pay for it. Otherwise, I’m not letting this go.”Â
At that, a cold, vicious glint flashed in the thug’s eyes. “You’d better watch it. We’re from Ebony Base, you know.”Â
As soon as the name Ebony Base dropped, the powered humans nearby stiffened, their faces changing instantly. They quickly put some distance between themselves and Chloe’s crew, not wanting any trouble.Â
Seeing everyone back off, the thug cocked his chin even higher, grinning like he owned the place.Â
“Ever heard of Noah Fletcher? He’s our base chief, and rumor has it he’s a sixth–level powered human now,” the thug bragged, puffing out his chest.Â
‘Wait, a sixth–level powered human?‘ The thought hit everyone at once, eyes going wide in disbelief.Â
The crowd around them stared in shock, jaws dropping, totally unable to believe what they were hearing.Â
“No way, you serious?” someone blurted out, voice full of disbelief.Â
When the thug started bragging about their base chief, he got even more full of himself. But to his shock, the other side didn’t look scared at all. They looked downright disdainful.Â
Emily rolled her eyes. “Noah Fletcher? Seriously, what’s so special about him? He tried to win over our captain once, but couldn’t even pull it off.”Â
Everyone was floored, and the place instantly buzzed with gossip.Â
“Emily,” Chloe said.Â
Chloe’s face darkened, clearly not happy.Â
Emily realized she’d messed up, shot Chloe an apologetic look, covered her mouth, and hung her head.Â
But once Emily had said it, there was no taking it back. Everyone gave Chloe a once–over, and they had to admit, she was stunning.Â
People had only heard about how strong Noah was. Nobody really knew what kind of person he was. For a moment, plenty of folks were convinced.Â
“Enough with the nonsense! If you don’t hand over some supplies today, forget about leaving,” Emily switched gears, going off on them without holding back.Â
The group hesitated for a moment, but by then, the powered humans around them had pretty much cleared out, all heading toward Riverside.Â
Loud rumbling echoed from the highway up ahead, the ground shaking hard as cracks started splitting open across the road, fast enough for everyone to see.Â
No one had a clue what was going on up front, but cars were racing by, tearing down the road like their lives depended on it.Â
“Shit, it’s an earthquake! Everybody, get out, now!” Emily yelled, her face going white with panic.Â

They didn’t waste another second arguing with the thug. Everyone scrambled into their cars and took off, just trying toÂ
survive.Â
One by one, the vehicles sped off, disappearing in no time.Â
