Chapter 240 

“Frank, floor it! Head straight for Riverside!” Chloe ordered. 

Chloe’s face was grim. “Everyone, stay sharp. We might be in for a tough fight when we get to Riverside.” 

After dealing with the mutant bugs and the earthquake, everyone had a taste of just how dangerous Lakeside could be. They hadn’t even arrived yet, and they’d already faced two major threats. 

If this was what happened before they even got there, no one knew what kind of trouble was waiting for them in Lakesi e. Everyone nodded, their faces serious. 

The vehicles up ahead were speeding by, and the tremors behind them were getting more intense. The earth was splitting open, and countless underground creatures started crawling out of the cracks. 

Already, quite a few powered humans were falling back. 

Now, less than half of the people remained compared to earlier. 

The Base Truck turned a corner and pulled up to the gates of Riverside. It was obvious no one had set foot here in ages. 

The vehicle slowly rolled into the streets, and everything felt eerie and unsettling. 

The once sunny sky was now smothered by thick, ominous clouds, and crows swooped overhead, their cries echoing through the empty city, making the place feel even more chilling. 

A sense of dread crept over everyone. 

Frank kept his eyes peeled as he drove. “Everyone, stay sharp. Don’t go wandering off. This place is seriously weird.” 

Even Filip and Chiara could sense something was off. They clutched their clothes tighter, their eyes darting around, ready to jump into action if anything happened. 

The vehicle was cruising at about 80 miles per hour–not too fast, not too slow. By all rights, plenty of powered humans should’ve arrived here before them, but so far, they hadn’t seen a single person. That was seriously unsettling. 

The Base Truck kept rolling ahead, and after half an hour, Chloe suddenly frowned deeply. 

The five military vehicles that had been right behind them were gone. The strangest part was that there hadn’t been a single fork in the road. 

It was just one wide, straight street through the city. It was like William and his crew had vanished into thin air. 

Everyone else realized something was off, too. 

“Wait, where’s Captain York?” someone exclaimed. 

“Wait, where did all those teams behind us go? They were just there a minute ago!” someone blurted out, sounding uneasy. 

Suddenly, Frank shouted from the front, clearly alarmed. “Damn, something’s happening up ahead!” 

The screech of brakes filled the air as the Base Truck came to a sudden stop. 

“What happened?” Mindy asked, her brow furrowed. 

Frank turned around, his face tense. “I’ve driven this road before. At this speed, we should’ve reached a landmark and gotten out of here by now.”

Chapter 240 

Mindy’s lips went pale. “Are you saying…” 

“It feels like we’ve fallen into some kind of endless loop,” Chloe said, her voice heavy. 

As soon as she said it, everyone’s expression darkened, even Chloe’s. All eyes turned to her. 

Emily suddenly spoke up, her voice tense. “There’s fog everywhere. My spirit power can’t pierce through it at all. I can’t see what’s outside.” 

Chloe released Phantom Zombie from her spiritual space. She glanced around, and then reached out with her spirit power. Her face grew more and more grim, and finally she pointed behind them. 

“That way,” she said. 

Frank looked puzzled. “Phantom, are you sure it’s that way? We literally just came from there.” 

Phantom Zombie stayed silent, just kept her finger locked on the direction behind them. 

“Are we caught in some kind of ghost maze or something?” Emily whispered, her voice barely above a whisper. 

“Don’t say stuff like that,” Mindy retorted. 

She shot Emily a look, hugging her jacket tighter as she shivered. 

Mindy could handle zombies and mutant creatures, but ghosts were a whole different story. 

In the end, Frank followed the direction Phantom Zombie pointed, but every time they went a little further, Phantom Zombie would point somewhere else. Finally, she just gave up, dropping her head in frustration. 

Chloe brought Phantom into her spiritual space, her voice low and serious. “Even Phantom can’t find the right direction.” 

“So what do we do now?” someone asked. 

After a pause, Chloe looked at the thickening fog creeping closer. “Guess we’ll have to search for the answer inside the fog.” 

Everyone was caught in a strange illusion. If they just ran around aimlessly, they’d only get more anxious and lose their heads. 

“Right now, the smartest move is to stay calm and let things play out. Let’s pull the Base Truck over and wait,” Chloe said. 

Frank parked the Base Truck, and everyone was on edge, eyes darting around as they watched every corner. 

Emily kept her spirit power sweeping the area, constantly monitoring everything within half a mile.. 

Suddenly, Emily froze, terror flashing in her eyes as she realized the fog was slowly creeping toward them. 

“Did you notice something?” Chloe asked. 

Chloe was the first to spot that Emily was acting strange. 

Phantom Zombie had way stronger psychic power than Emily, but she was like a robot–great at fighting, not so great at picking up on the subtle stuff or adapting to changes. 

So from the start, Emily was their only real hope. 

“My spirit power can’t break through this fog at all. It’s like I’m totally blind. I have no clue what’s out there,” Emily said, her voice trembling. 

Chloe’s frown grew even deeper as she clenched her fists. “Stay sharp, everyone. Be ready to fight at a moment’s notice.”

While they were talking, the fog pressed in even tighter, like a giant beast slowly devouring their ground. From deep within the mist, the faint sounds of fighting echoed. 

Before long, those sounds faded, growing weaker and weaker until they were completely silenced, as if the monster in the fog had swallowed everything. 

Once the fighting stopped, the fog surged forward and engulfed the Base Truck. 

Outside, thick, swirling fog rolled everywhere, and visibility had dropped to almost nothing. 

Everyone was on edge, their nerves taut and their hair standing on end. 

Suddenly, a monstrous face pressed up against the window, its gaping maw wide open, teeth smeared with bloody scraps and bits of raw flesh. 

Even though everyone was on high alert, the sudden appearance made their hearts skip a beat. They barely managed to hold back a scream. 

Right after, the Base Truck lurched as a wave of weightlessness washed over them. Looking out, they realized the entire vehicle had been hoisted into the air by a towering beast, easily over thirty feet tall. 

“I’m going to stash the Base Truck in my spiritual space. Brace yourselves for a drop!” Chloe called out. 

With a single thought, the Base Truck vanished in midair, and the group of eight materialized right in front of the monster. 

Everyone reacted instantly, hitting the ground with a quick roll and spreading out in eight directions, surrounding the beast. 

Frank and Evan, the powerhouses, led the charge, going toe–to–toe with the monster. 

Emily and Phantom Zombie hit the monster’s mind with a spiritual attack almost simultaneously. 

The monster was wracked with pain, freezing up for a split second. 

Renee cast a spatial seal to weaken the beast, while Chiara amped up the team’s power and summoned a web of water in her hands. 

The moment the water net dropped over the monster’s head, a lightning bolt as thick as a pillar crashed down, and then scorching flames–easily over 2,000°F–roared over it, swallowing the beast in a blazing inferno. 

It was pure elemental chaos, fire and lightning tearing through the air. 

Chloe didn’t even need to step in. In just ten seconds, a nearly sixth–level monster was taken down. 

The monster’s hide started to fall off, stripped away by the sudden blast of ice and fire. 

Chloe walked over and picked up the core, stashing it in her backpack. 

It was just like they’d agreed, Chloe was in charge of holding onto all the cores they got along the way. 

As a healing–powered human, she could absorb the cores to heal wounds or help out whoever needed it most.
