In a team of over a hundred, only a dozen or so were still unscathed. The rest, about forty people, were all seriously injured.Â
If the Blaze Squad hadn’t shown up in time today, the powered humans of the Bluehaven Squad would have met their end right here.Â
Chloe didn’t waste time on pleasantries. She turned to a soldier and said, “You guys, clean up the battlefield. I’ll handle theÂ
wounded.”Â
The soldier bowed deeply to Chloe. “Captain Yates, you guys took down that monster, so you should be the one to collect it.”Â
Chloe looked exasperated. “You risked your lives for it. This isn’t the time to get sentimental. Just take it already. Don’t interrupt me while I’m treating his wounds.”Â
With that, she left the rest to Frank and slowly sent a stream of green energy into William’s body.Â
This place was full of danger. One careless step and they’d be swarmed by mutant beasts. Chloe wasn’t stupid enough to burn through her abilities in a place like this.Â
The green energy only kept William alive. She didn’t give him any extra.Â
She did the same for the other seriously injured soldiers, just enough to keep them breathing for now.Â
“Where are the medics?” Chloe called out.Â
Two women, both carrying medical kits, stumbled over, their faces pale, clearly shaken.Â
“Get to work patching up your guys, and here,” Chloe said, pulling out a bunch of bread from her spiritual space. “The rest is on you. Eat something and get your strength back.” on/you.Â
After surviving a life–or–death battle, the two medics had no appetite at all. They quickly shook their heads and refused.Â
“Thank you, Captain Yates, but we’re really not hungry right now. Let’s focus on saving the wounded first,” one of the medics replied.Â
“These breads will help restore your powers and even speed up your recovery. The work ahead is tough, so you need to keep your energy up,” Chloe said.Â
“What? The two medics exchanged shocked looks, disbelief written all over their faces.Â
“W–What did you just say?” one of them stammered.Â
Chloe didn’t bother explaining any further. She just waved them off, telling them to hurry up and get moving.Â
The two medics understood the situation perfectly, so they didn’t waste any more words. They grabbed the bread, ate it with tears in their eyes, and soon felt their strength returning.Â
The color returned to their faces, and they no longer looked as pale as before.Â
“What the heck is this, some kind of miracle food? My powers were totally drained, and now they’re almost back!” one of the medics blurted out, stunned.Â
She couldn’t help but scarf down the rest of the bread, and to her amazement, her powers miraculously recovered to seventy percent.Â
Even popping a core doesn’t work this fast.Â

She reached for another piece of bread, but Mindy stopped her. “These can only restore your powers up to seventy percent. If you eat more, it’ll just fill you up. It won’t help your abilities any further.”Â
Mindy watched the two medics devouring the bread, tears streaming down their faces as they desperately tried to recover their powers.Â
The two medics paused, bowed gratefully to Mindy, then jumped right back into saving lives.Â
Chloe stayed put, grabbed a piece of bread, and ate it to recharge her abilities. Then she started scanning the area, keeping an eye out for any trouble.Â
Now that she was the strongest in the group, her only responsibility was to keep everyone safe; everything else was left to theÂ
others.Â
Everyone was busy treating the wounded, and the two medics were running around nonstop, barely able to catch their breath.Â
One of the soldiers walked over and saluted Chloe. “Captain Yates, I’m the space–powered man in our squad. My space just awakened, and it’s pretty small. It’s already stuffed with gear and food. Could you help us store the mutant beast corpse?”Â
He looked a bit sheepish as he spoke. After all, Chloe had already done so much for them.Â
Chloe just waved it off. “No problem. I’ll give it back to you when we get back.”Â
With that, Chloe walked over to the giant mutant beast. Its neck had been severed, and blood poured out in streams, staining the ground a vivid crimson.Â
The monster’s blood pooled together, spreading far across the earth before seeping down through surface fissures and disappearing underground.Â
Probably, it was just Chloe’s imagination, or she really heard a faint rustling from beneath the crack. But when she listened closely, the sound seemed to vanish.Â
Cautiously, Chloe crouched beside the fissure and peered down, but all she saw was endless darkness stretching below.Â
Just as Chloe was about to check things out, a bunch of strangers barged in, breaking the peace with their loud, excited voices.Â
“Whoa, Ishaan, there’s a dead mutant beast here! It looks just like a dinosaur. We hit the jackpot!” a girl shouted.Â
Dawn was just breaking as a group of about a dozen people came out of the fog. Leading the way was a guy in his twenties named Ishaan Linville, with a teenage girl named Jaliyah Linville at his side.Â
Jaliyah looked maybe eighteen or nineteen, full of innocence and energy. She bounced over, totally carefree, like she hadn’t seen any of the world’s darkness yet.Â
But nobody here bought her innocent act. Everyone knew she was anything but naive.Â
Jaliyah paid zero attention to anyone else, totally fixated on the bloody dinosaur–like mutant beast. Her face lit up with excitement as she turned to Ishaan, grinning.Â
“Whoa, Ishaan, check it out! It’s a sixth–level mutant beast!” she squealed.Â
Jaliyah acted like she was the only one here, completely ignoring the powered humans around her.Â
Ishaan wore a doting smile, but didn’t bother acknowledging anyone else. There was a hint of arrogance in his eyes, as if he thought the whole crowd was beneath him.Â
But when he caught sight of Chloe, he was clearly impressed. He froze for a second, smoothed his hair, and strolled over,Â

Pointing at the bloody mutant dinosaur beast lying nearby, he gestured and asked, “Excuse me, miss, did you guys take down that mutant beast?”Â
Emily plopped herself right in front of Chloe, blocking her from view.Â
She crossed her arms and sneered, “Seriously, who else? You guys? And FYI, she gets scared easily. You’re all bloody, so try not to freak her out.”Â
William, who had just woken up, stared wide–eyed in shock.Â
‘Chloe? Gets scared easily? Seriously?‘ William thought, utterly confused.Â
The Blaze Squad and Bluehaven Squad members exchanged looks, at a loss for words.Â
A flash of irritation crossed Ishaan’s face when his view of Chloe was blocked, but out of respect for Emily, Chloe’s friend, he kept his manners in check.Â
He stepped around Emily and offered Chloe a hand with a gentle smile. “Hey, miss, hope I didn’t scare you. Sorry if I was too forward.”Â
While apologizing, his hands were anything but idle. He bent down, about to lift Chloe into his arms.Â
His actions were so practiced, it was as if they were lovers who’d known each other forever.Â
That was the last straw.Â
Emily shoved herself between them and separated the two. She planted her hands on her hips and glared at him with her beady eyes.Â
“Hey, which asylum did this weirdo escape from? Who the hell are you, thinking you can put your filthy hands on her?” Emily snapped.Â
